I saw a movie in the 90's (probably made in the 80's) about a musical quartet of friends that played the circuit in the Catskills. The star was a trumpet player who had all the talent and the breaks but never fulfilled his potential. One of the other band members (of marginal talent but all the desire in the world) was always resentful of the trumpet player and told him something like this..."...you waste your talent and I practice hard all the time and never get a break..." to which the trumpet player replied "...Sometimes desire is not enough..." which was telling his friend to lay off and that he was never good enough despite his desire.
Anyway the plot went something like that.
There was also a parallel plot (or maybe it was another movie altogether) where there was a 50's-style band from Russia or Romania that was "touring" America. They weren't very good but had a cult following. I remember this group because they all sported an oversized pompidour Elvis-like hairdo and shoes that had LONG pointy tips. They wore black suits and thin ties. One of the band members died and they couldn't part with him so they lugged his casket around with them. There were holes cut in the casket: one at the head (for the pompidour) and one at the feet (for the shoes).
It was kind of a dark comedy.
