This one's been bothering me on-and-off for years now. The movie revolves around a central character's recruitment of various alien mercenaries for the epic end-of-movie battle against the obligatory evil alien horde. Each recruited alien has a particular shtick - the one I can clearly remember is a portrayed-as-particularly-attractive female whose ship is small, but lightning fast. I recall being shocked at how many of the 'good guys' get killed at the end of the movie (the lightning-fast ship girl is ultimately surrounded by the enemy and chooses to detonate her ship - with her in it - to take out several enemy fighters).
This one's gotta be pretty obscure - wish I could remember more detail. Many thanks to anyone who can lock this one down!

Sounds like "Battle Beyond the Stars" with Richard Thomas and George Peppard. I could be wrong though!
