I am watching "Sixteen Candles" and I am thinking to myself. Jake Ryan's wardrobe would still hold up today. Can you think of any other 80s movies where the fashion would still hold today. K, I don't mean the stuff that has come back into fashion. Think about the early 90's, would the fashion have worked then?

I think Claire from BREAKFAST CLUB (Molly Ringwald) could have walked through the 90s and 00s without anybody pointing and laughing.
Awhile back I bought GIRLS JUST WANNA HAVE FUN so I could watch it with my daughter who will be nine soon. Opening credits aren't even over yet and she actually jumped to her feet and went "Mom! Look at their clothes!" and absolutley refused to watch the movie with me becuase the outfits and hair had totally dated it to being so Totally 80s! This is the same person who makes me play JUST ONE OF THE GUYS all the time ...and, man, is that ever an 80s Fashion Parade!
You know...know that I think about it......Judd Nelson in BREAKFAST CLUB would have held up through the 90s and 00s too!

I agree with you about Claire. That outfit would stand the test of time.
That is so funny that your daughter wouldn't watch GIRLS JUST WANT TO HAVE FUN. What can we say, us girls know our fashion. I bet if she sat and watched it she would be hooked. That one is definitely loaded with 80s fashion and and hair.

I agree about Claire as well...love the skirt! Nobody would say anything to Sean Penn in Fast Times...surfer looks haven't gone out of style.

I just bought a black and hot pink checkered scarf! It's pretty much the same pattern as his Vans. It's so Spiccoli! I love it! Awesome!

As my name says, Gordon Gecko in his power suits would hold up as well.
It's funny trying to think of people because so many of them would not work at all. Ha.
Posted by mamamiasweetpeaches (Member # 1715) on :
Yeah, but remember WOMENS power suits from the 80s???? The ones with the football player shoulder pads stuffed in 'em??? they aint coming back any time soon!
Posted by evilash (Member # 6155) on :
ew, i hate shoulder pads. my mom is friend's with an old lady who likes to give me her hand me downs. I have received 3 blouses/shirts with the pads in them. yuck.

Oh my, I remember my mum wearing those shoulder padded jackets in the 80's, horrendous haha.
Posted by evilash (Member # 6155) on :
Another bad fashion trend: neon colors. Nuff said.

Mamamia--I think that shoulder pads probablly are one of the most notable 80s fashion mistakes. They obviously weren't that popular because they haven't lasted in the fashion industry that I can tell. I remember always having to mess with them or they would dry funny and not lay correctly on your shoulder and most of the time they would just get cut out. That is definitly an 80s fashion that I don't miss.

I can't even remember the number of things I cut the shoulder pads out of!! Of course then it never fit quite right.
Posted by evilash (Member # 6155) on :
yeah, they sewed the sleeves to accomidate the pads...what a horrible idea

In much the same way that they grew their legs to accomodate leg-warmers....

HA!

Whether or not people like shoulder pads, at some point they'll be back. All fashions are recycled, and the younger generation won't have the cringe response to them that we do. After all, platforms made a comeback in the 90's, which was absolutely inconceivable in the 80's.
Posted by evilash (Member # 6155) on :
Actually, shoulder pads made a slight "comeback" a couple falls ago. They only put them in business suits and were considerable smaller than their ancestors. Again, they were not popular (except with the big haired super models who were forced to wear them on a run way.) Glad they are gone.

I'm glad they're gone too. But I still say that if you wait around long enough they'll be back (properly back). You have been warned!

Hello everyone. I am new to this site (fellow 80's chud, I mean, child) and wanted to post a reply. So uh, here it is.
I don't think the 80's fashion has yet made a full circle, although some of it may hold up in bigger cities. Hope that made sense.
Glad to be here by the way.

Right now, old Hollywood is popular, which is good cuz it looks good on everyone so I am guessing another 30 or 40 years before they get around to the 80s. Hey, maybe you can start the trend in your town!

I'm gonna grow my mullet back and start dressing in black again. haha

I cant believe leg warmers are making a small comeback. I see them in stores but I havent actually SEEN anyone wearing them yet!
You know what I used to love? Stirrup pants! When are THEY coming back???
Posted by P.S. It's Paul.... (Member # 1022) on :
Moonboots. Low-crotch trousers (designed that way, not done by wearing your jeans half-way down your legs, showing everyone where you got your undercrackers from). Bat-wing sleeves. thin leather ties with piano keys on them.
Oh the memories, the nostalgia, the long-since burned photographs...

Leg warmers are making a comeback with children's clothes. Actually, my sister and I like to put them on the babies because you don't have to unsnap or pull down the pants to change diapers. I believe they call them baby legs and they are on a site called babybella.com. I think they are cute. However, I won't be buying any for myself.
Posted by evilash (Member # 6155) on :
Ew! Remember Corey Haim's clothes in The Lost Boys? Won't work today and really didn't work back then either.

This is definitely still true today!

I just got done watching No Small Affair. The clothes Demi Moore has on would be in style right now (2021). The floral dress with gloves and heels. All of the wardrobe, minus any shoulder pads. I always cut them out of my clothes when possible, back in the day.
