I read an article that Cusack stated that he thought he only made 10 great films.
Say Anything Grosse Pointe Blank High Fidelity The Sure Thing The Grifters The Thin Red Line Being John Malkovich Eight Men Out Bullets Over Broadway Max
I for one am very disappointed that he left out Better Off Dead and One Crazy Summer. Those are classic films and without the start of those he wouldn't even have 10 to focus on. What about Stand By Me. I mean I know he had a bit part in it but he was an instrumental character in it.
What do you guys think?
Posted by mamamiasweetpeaches (Member # 1715) on :
The first thing to pop into my head was "STAND BY ME better be on there!"- even though he had a small part- it was an important part!
Yeah, I love BETTER OFF DEAD. He's just being modest!

Missed off Pretty In Pink as well....
My three favorites are there though: Grosse Point Blank, High Fidelity, and The Sure Thing.

i love the guy to pieces.. and i can watch almost any movie he's in. i agree mamamia, i think he's just being modest. there's such a charm about him, and it reflects in all his roles. i happen to like serendipity..one crazy summer is ok, but better off dead was awesome.
where did you read about him jess??

I read an interview with Savage Steve Holland (the director of Better off Dead and One Crazy Summer) and Dan Schneider (Ricky from Better Off Dead) a while back.
The interview gives a bit of detail about how Cusack hates Better Off Dead and One Crazy Summer (yes, it's very sad).
From the article:
Savage Steve Holland: So we’re all watching the Better Off Dead screening that night, and John walked out of the movie. About 20 minutes into it, he walked out, and he never came back.
The next morning, he basically walked up to me and was like, “You know, you tricked me. Better Off Dead was the worst thing I have ever seen. I will never trust you as a director ever again, so don’t speak to me.”
Dan Schneider: Are you kidding?!
Savage Steve: No, it was that bad. He was just really upset. And I said, “What happened?! What’s wrong?!” And he just said that I sucked, and it was the worst thing he had ever seen, and that I had used him, and made a fool out of him, and all this other stuff.
And I was just stunned, because it was as funny as ****. And he was great in it. And he was helping me edit it throughout the summer.

oh wow... poor guy.. cusack broke his heart! thanks for the link wolfman, but what a downer.
ah well, cusack fans LOVED better off dead. hope he knows that.

I thought he did great in 1408 as well..........

I just got hot pursuit, better off dead and tape heads the other day. I haven't had time to watch em yet....but I love a bit of John...so I should like em whatever.
Posted by Jessie the Sunflower Goddess (Member # 1877) on :
I don't know what 1408 is, it must be new. I didn't know that he thought he was awful in Better Off Dead. He needs to read some things on here and he will see that he shouldn't feel bad because so many people love the film.
Ronnie--
I found the link on imdb.com where he discussed his top 10. I believe it was guardian.uk.?? It was a British Magazine article I think.
I haven't seen Hot Pursuit, I don't think, one I need to check out.
Posted by NowhereGirl (Member # 465) on :
thanks jess you really should check out 1408 jess... it's based on the stephen king novel (same title). i am pretty sure it's not playing in theaters anymore, but should be well on it's way to dvd soon. john is great in this movie!
Posted by Kash (Member # 297) on :
I’d say John was about right with his list, mine (excluding bit parts like ‘Stand By Me’, ‘Broadcast News’ or ensemble films like ‘The Thin Red Line’) would be...
1. Grosse Pointe Blank 2. Being John Malkovich 3. High Fidelity 4. Tapeheads 5. America’s Sweethearts 6. Con Air 7. Cradle Will Rock / Pushing Tin 8. Money For Nothing 9. Runaway Jury
Posted by jdocster04 (Member # 5752) on :
I've never seen tape heads... Does anyone know if it's any good?
Thanks...
Posted by Earth Angel (Member # 3301) on :
I'm gonna watch it tomorrow...I will let you know my findings
Posted by mamamiasweetpeaches (Member # 1715) on :
OhmyGod: I forgot all about TAPEHEADS!!!! I love that one! Is it out on DVD? I have to get a copy of that!!!!
Posted by Earth Angel (Member # 3301) on :
Watched Tape Heads last night...I liked it ....it has all the makings of a cult classic in my opinion...which means it's slightly weird...very quotable and largely unknown.
Watch it X

I loved the videos in TAPEHEADS! Baby Doll by the European band and the song for the house of chicken and pancakes. What a scream!

EA,
Thanks for the review. I'll have to buy it!
Posted by Earth Angel (Member # 3301) on :
Yeah...the European band is called Cube Squared....and the song is written and performed by Devo (trivia)...although it isn't them in the video - I was singing 'Baby doll' and the chicken song all night....as well as saying...'you better get it right this time Hinkle'.....it's def worth buying. I got mine off amazon.

tapeheads was a bit off a mess overall but a lot of fun especially the video's john cusack and tim robbins film.
As for cusack slating a lot of his 80s (fan favourite) comedies it does feel a bit of a downer and to me feels a bit like when jennifer connelly gave an interview sometime back and put down the likes of - phenomena and career opportunities which happen to be my two favourite films that she has appeared in and are basically the ones that got me interested in her in the first place.
When the celebs come out and belittle there own films it definitely feels a bit of a bummer if your a big fan of the movie in question.
john cusack claiming he was made to look silly by director savage steve holland in his1985 comedy - better off dead - no,i don't know what he's on about!

Personally, I love Better Off Dead! It's a great movie and I thought he was fantastic in it.

Cusack may also wish to include his providing the voice of Dmitry in Anastasia among the winners, as he nails it there.

So far I've only seen Say Anything, Better Off Dead, Stand By Me and Sixteen Candles. But I'm definitely going to see more of his movies soon. Either today or tomorrow I'm going to see One Crazy Summer and The Sure Thing.

The Sure Thing is his best 80's effort in my book.

One Crazy Summer is good, but it seems to lack something to me. I agree with Peter, Sure Thing is my favourite of his 80's movies.
Oh, and a lot of people miss out 'Class' in which he has a very tiny role.

Yep, another unabashed Better Off Dead fan here. My family loves the film too. We have matching Lane Meyer Ski School t-shirts.

Where did you get the t-shirts Irwin? I am after a Realistic Chronomatic 230 clock radio like lane has in his bedroom.

I still remember when we rented Better Off Dead back in the day and loved it. I mean, how can you not love this film? Savage Steve is a genius, i was shocked to hear that Cusack hates it.
I´m going to rewatch few Cucack films soon.
