The Lost Boys in my opinion is the best vampire movie of all time. But the fact that it's getting re-made and without Corey Haim makes me think that it's going to be a huge flop
Posted by Helen_S (Member # 5804) on :
lol Exactly Mire Mare. Nothing is safe anymore
I don't think The Lost boys is being remade is it? I thought it was just a sequel. What are they like eh, a sequel 20 years later
Posted by Mire Mare (Member # 5900) on :
It does make you wonder if there are still any great untold story's left out there, I think more often than not it is a case of better the devil you know, I mean why take a risk on something new when you can milk a well known movie for all it is worth!
The Omen & The Texas Chainsaw Massacre were and still are absolute classics and yet the studious decided to remake them for a new generation of filmgoer!
Why!
The original still hold water don't they!
Saw and its respected sequels I personally thought where great films and show that the ability to truly scare and shock is still around, sure they borrowed ideas from others but what the heck at least they weren't ****ty remakes!
Sequels or prequels can also be a damn pain tainting a once great movie, although I have mentioned this before the Exorcist & The Exorcist III (The true sequel) are great films!
But what was with those prequels!

I like this thread, it's fangtastic. I like Helen's list BTW.
OK, it's tough to compile but in no order:
Vampire Circus Lost Boys Underworld Near Dark Dracula(1958) Bram Stoker's Dracula Twins of Evil Black Sunday Fright Night Brides of Dracula
Posted by Spooka Lupa (Member # 2700) on :
I'm surprised Once Bitten has made it to this list so many times--I own it own DVD, but I don't think it's one of the top ten vampire films by far, lol. It's so bad, but I like it because of that.
Lost Boys definitely deserves to be on the list though. I might also mention the Buffy movie, but really the show deserves to be on the list more than the movie does (Though David Arquette and Paul Reubens are my favorite parts of the movie).

I'm gonna say, the fact that there are enough Vampire movies to choose a top ten from means the market is over-saturated. From Buffy to now there seems to have been a taming and marketing of what was once a fairly marginal (and good) horror character / genre.
Remember when Vampire / Werewolf movies were supposed to be scary? Don't get me wrong, I love 'The Lost Boys', but at the time it was an exception rather than the rule.

How about Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein? That was a good one

Riptide, so glad to see Vampire Circus on your list and another's. That is a terrific Hammer Film and a personal favorite. I remember years ago the first time I saw the uncensored climax of that movie at a convention where a guy was selling a VHS copy of the PAL videocassette, and I was stunned. Man, did we get ripped off when it was released and censored in the U.S. I just read that Circus, Twins of Evil, and Hands of the Ripper (another personal favorite) may finally be coming to DVD courtesy Synapse later this year. It's about freakin' time! I've waited for these things for years to turn up on the legit market.
Posted by Crash (Member # 7484) on :
And Valley, you put Vampyros Lesbos on your list! Who-hoo! Nifty "out-there choice"! I remember being a kid and reading all the genre books and magazines and seeing the same four or so photos of Soledad Miranda from the movie, which, of course, never played at all in the U.S. And then, we got the new century, and now I am the proud owner of the DVD! When I hunted for these grail quests for years, and they finally turned up, more often, I was so disappointed because they were less than what my mind's eye imagined. Not so for Vampyros folks!
Posted by There'll be no morning for us (Member # 5804) on :
I have Twins of Evil and Hands of the Ripper. They've been available on R2 for a while. Great films
Posted by Crash (Member # 7484) on :
I may be the only Hammer fan who doesn't really appreciate Twins. It's okay, but so far from The Vampire Lovers... Now Hands is a different story. It's terrific.
Posted by There'll be no morning for us (Member # 5804) on :
I really like Twins, but it does come around the bottom of the Hammer vamp films for me. But there's only one I don't like actually, Dracula A.D 1972, but I can never leave it out when I'm having a Hammer Dracula marathon
[ 25. April 2010, 19:16: Message edited by: There'll be no morning for us ]
Posted by Crash (Member # 7484) on :
I agree with you on A.D. 1972. I am not a particular fan of The Satanic Rites of Dracula either, though the guys get plus points for trying something different. But I do think that Scars of Dracula, despite the threadbare production, isn't actually as bad as folks think. (Most hate the companion piece, Horror of Frankenstein, too, but I really like that one.)
Posted by There'll be no morning for us (Member # 5804) on :
Yeah, I think Scars is great, I put it 6th in here. And Horror is so funny. The only Frankenstein I'm not keen on is Evil of Frankenstein.
Ooh I love Hammer talk
Posted by Crash (Member # 7484) on :
I hear you and agree with you. Evil is just OK. It has a kind of a cookie-cutter, "programmer" feel, not terrible, just not terribly exciting or different. I know most folks like Revenge of Frankenstein the best, but I am very fond of Frankenstein Created Woman. It's just so well written and haunting. It has stayed with me for years as unforgettable, particularly the scenes where Susan Denberg takes out each of the bad guys (She's really beautiful, yet scary.) And I love the scene where Peter Cushng testifies at trial that he'd be a "doctor of witchcraft" if they gave out that degree. Just a splendid, beautiful horror film!

Ahh, Created Woman is the one I have the fondest memories of cos the BBC put that one on so much when I was a kid My top 3 tho would have to be Curse of, Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed and Revenge. Making Peter a rapist in Must be Destroyed was just so wrong lol
