Hi rewinders. This is a great movie, but there are some things I don't understand. Do you know what is the exact reason for Jack's slide into extreme violence? It happens quite quickly, the first sign being his outburst towards his wife when she checks in on him when he is writing. The place seems haunted by the ghosts of the previous victims 10 years earlier. I haven't read the book, but have seen the movie many times over the years, so I don't know of any differences. Also the famous picture at the end from the past, I'm not sure of the significance of. Any ideas? Posted by pettyfan (Member # 2260) on :
I've read the book several times and seen the movie several times. Like any other book-to-movie deal, there are some differences. I think he was pretty unstable to begin with (remember, he broke his son's arm when he was younger)and the "ghosts" just brought out the worst in him.

I think you should read the book, you can't explain things in a film the way you can in a book.
I read it years ago, so can't quite remember. Thinking about it, I might read it again :-)

I went to imdb.com, where The Shining is and checked out their faq section. Regarding the photo there are two possible answers, the first being reincarnation and the second being that the Overlook absorbed Jack into itself and it's history. His insanity isn't really explained so I guess it was the hotel itself responsible for his behaviour and the influence of Delbert Grady's ghost. Posted by Helen_S (Member # 5804) on :
I remember the book going much more into his alcoholism. They only really touch upon that in the film.

Has anyone else seen the 1997 made for TV version? It's much truer to the book and uses it's real ending but the Nicholson one is still well better I think.

Yeah, I saw it. Apparently, Stephen King wasn't happy with Kubrick's version, so he had it re-made. I thought it was okay, but I definitely liked the Jack Nicholson version better.
