Has anyone else noticed that lately the studios seem intent on replacing every single movie's original artwork for the DVD releases?
A few years ago, they would use the original artwork if it was available, but now they seem to be going through and re-releasing with new, gaudy modern replacements.
The new Red Dawn DVD could have used the original but didn't. The latest 48 hrs DVD inexplicably replaces the original. Have they learnt that they sell better if they give the impression that it's a new movie?

I suppose the reasoning could be that if you're younger or perhaps coming new to a film then the 'old fasioned' artwork might put you off buying it. If, however, you remember the original artwork and are a fan of the film, you might be a bit p'd off but you'll buy it anyway. Win win.
The original artwork is always the best tho'. I say cut up your old VHS inserts and use those.
Going slightly off topic for a moment, does anyone miss the old VHS rental stores? The artwork was always faded from light exposure and I remember being terrified by the covers of the 80s 'video nasties' which invariably had some nightmare inducing image on the front. Then there were the really awful low budget comedies whose cover art always featured a scantily clad siren wearing skis or rollerskates with some grinning buffoon like Steve Guttenberg staring out from between her legs. And a fat man dressed as a woman.

That description was excellent. My friend recently asked what I thought was the best of the 'classic' video covers: He opted for 'National Lampoons Vacation' (a good choice), but for some reason my mind kept saying 'Clash of the Titans'. Not the best, I grant you, but for some reason it takes me back. I also think that many of the old white box Disney covers have a reminiscent quality to them. As for Horror film covers... ah... now there's some good stuff. Will we ever again see the likes of 'Happy Birthday to Me' or 'My Bloody Valentine'? I doubt it. We shall certainly never see the likes of 'Xtro' again!

I'd go with Short Circuit's cover as the best; it sums up the whole picture with just one simple gesture (and is still basically intact on current releases apart from background recoloring, which doesn't really affect it much).
I also think that many of the old white box Disney covers have a reminiscent quality to them.
Fifteen years or so after the line officially ended, many fans still consider the Black Diamond Classics among the best video artwork ever made. You can just appreciate how much they actually put time and effort into those covers, and it pays off with some of the best art outside an actual feature.
