I think the 80s had some decent horror movies. The 90s? Not too great. But I think within the last couple years horror movies are getting better (at least some of them are).

If you could pick your favorite horror movie(s), any decade, what would you pick? I would have to pick Children of the Corn, Silver Bullet, The Shining, Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night 2, Ghost Story and Phantasm. What about the rest of you?

70s HALLOWEEN
80s NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET
90s CANDYMAN

Halloween and Friday the 13th 3 and 4 are my favorites.

As a few of you know, my top choice is Evil Dead 2. The whole trilogy is great.

I don't watch too many real horror movies, but there are some I like a lot (like the aforementioned movies). American Werewolf in London is really good. The Lost Boys is also a good one.

Shaun of the Dead is the funniest horror movie I've ever seen.

Silver Bullet is a good choice. That Corey Haim is just so darned cute and little in it. Plus you can't go wrong with a rocket-powered wheelchair built by Gary Busey.

DEMONS and RE-ANIMATOR - 100% Pure 80's Gore-Fests! a perfect Saturday night double bill.

You all have my favorite horror movies-Loved Silver Bullet and lost boys(Corey Haim is great!) The Shining, Phantasm, Halloween, Friday the 13th, Children of the Corn and all the Evil Deads. Did anyone like trilogy of terror?
And I'm trying to figure out the name of a horror movie I think I saw in the 80's..maybe 70's? It takes place in a house where they whispher 'Alice'..I always thought that was pretty creepy...

Posted by feelingfine2 (Member # 5058) on :

Anyone like 'People under the stairs?'

Posted by mamamiasweetpeaches (Member # 1715) on :

FEELINGFINE: Are you sure they dont whisper "Sally"? Cuz I watched an old TV movie yesterday called DONT BE AFRAID OF THE DARK about a woman who inherits a house that has little gremlin-like monsters in it that whisper "Sally, SAllllly" and torment her. (If you guys look up the reviews for it on IMDB you will see it has a HUGE fanbase: All people who saw it as a kid on TV and had the crap scared out of them!)

I thought we had to name ONE flick from each decade: If we are allowed to lump all our faves together:
CANDYMAN
CARRIE
HELLRAISER & HELLBOUND: HELLRAISER II
SHINING
NIGHTMARE ON ELMSTREET I, III & IV
EVIL DEAD I & II
HALLOWEEN I & II
PHANTASM

I'm sure I'll think of more later.

This is a good topic and very appropriate for the season. I was just thinking about this today. What horror movies am I getting in the mood to see:

A Nightmare on Elm Street. I love it when Freddy comes out of the wall and Glen aka Mr. Depp gets sucked into the bed. Some great effects in that movie.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre--really any will do and I am going to see the new one in theaters this time. I don't remember the last time that I saw a horror movie at the theater. I think in order to get the full effect it is best to see them at the theater.

Halloween 1 & 2 for obvious reasons.

Hellraiser

The Exorcist

Those will do to start me out...

Hey Chucky,

As corny as it may sound, I think Chopping Mall and Dolls are great movies. Neither are particularly scary but they each have their own charm. I bought both of them last year!

Chopping Mall is awesome cause it was filmed entirely in the Sherman Oaks Galleria Mall, where Fast Times was also shot. It no longer exists. I believe it was torn down in the mid 90's. I just love the idea of being trapped and running around in a mall at night. Must be the Valley Girl in me [Wink] !

As for Dolls, this is another movie that just has a feel all it's own. When I watch it, it's like I'm in 5th grade all over again. The characters and the house and dolls are awesome in a totally creepy 80's way.

See both of these! They're classics!

Hey cindymancini

Thanks for that. Ive just ordered Chopping Mall, so ill let you know what i think!!

I agree with Cindy--Dolls is a good movie. I watched it for the first time last year. Ghoulies is just okay. I didn't really care for it. Chopping Mall was good, but not what I expected it to be--I didn't expect robots!

80s: Poltergeist

CHUCKY, that was a great list.
enjoy chopping mall and i hope you check out dolls as well. both are total 80s cheese, but great.

return of the living dead 1 & 2..halloween 1 & 2, creepshows 1 & 2...those would be my choices.

Posted by maxwellhauser (Member # 4968) on :

I loved Return of the Living Dead - where the zombie tells his girlfriend that if she loves him, she'll let him eat her brain.

Great 80s moment - girl with punk rock hair strips naked and starts dancing in the rain, in the graveyard.

Don't forget--acid rain-- [Big Grin] . I have the soundtrack to ROTLD II... it actually kicks major ***!

I have a lot more to talk about though, looking forward to hearing from 80's people like myself!

Posted by mamamiasweetpeaches (Member # 1715) on :

You know what I never realized before? On the soundtrack for RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD there is a band called SSQ ("Tonight We'll Make Love Until We Die", "Trash's Theme")....their lead singer is STACEY Q who had 80s pop hits like "Two Of Hearts" and "We Connect"!

I'm more of a comedy person but I enjoy a good scary flick around this time of year.

I recently read an article that suggests this new wave of horror movies is here to stay for a while. But it also said that when something starts to work, more people start to attempt it. People keep on doing the same thing over and over and then suddenly it's not there anymore. I guess they mean if they continue to churn out too many sequels to movies like Saw, Hostel, The Hills Have Eyes, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, etc... then people will get bored and stop going to see them.

Here's my list:

60s- Night of the Living Dead, Psycho

70s- Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Halloween, The Town That Dreaded Sundown

80s- Christine, Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street (only the first one), The Hitcher (even though it's more of a thriller), Happy Birthday to Me, Mother's Day, Silent Night, Deadly Night, Child's Play

90s- From Dusk Till Dawn, Scream

00s- The Devil's Rejects

I have viewed other posts and noticed someone else is also rainbow brite; but, there can be two just unique in each way. anyhoo, I have never seen demons or reanimator! I know where have I been? I am going to try and get my hands on copies of them both and will post my reply thanks for the thumbs up! I added you to my buddylist, I am fascinated by england, my middle name happens to be diana, I am honored by one of the greatest women who ever lived. hope to chat again soon.

Can someone help me??
Where can I get My Demon Lover on DVD and how can I get my hands on the soundtrack??
Thank you

I'd argue the 80s was the best decade for horror. For individual films, the 1970s produced the best of the genre (Halloween, The Exorcist, Straw Dogs, The Omen etc.), but for sheer diversity and filmmakers realizing the genre could be fun not depressing (Last House On The Left), the decade brought us so many wonderful films.

Cannibal Holocuast, Make Them Die Slowly, Maniac, Madman, Friaday the 13th, and the original TCM.

All theese movies you are posting are really good and i don't want to to say the same again.
I just wanted to add a great movie and one of my favorites of all times, Near Dark. It's a great vampire movie and i read somewhere that a remake is on the way. Totally worth it to give this movie a chance.

Yay, nice to see Halloween 3 getting some love [Wink] That's my second favourite of the series.

Phantasm 2 is the best Phantasm film I think, followed by the 4th, love them all tho [Smile]

Posted by james Andrews (Member # 1425) on :

I like the 3 Maniac Cop movies alot. I think most people would like the second one, but the first from 1988 is cool also. Unusual for a film, Tom Atkins is the hero for the film until about 3/4 into the movie, and then Bruce Campbell takes over(he plays it straight during the movie though).
The score is cool throughout, very sad.
In the sequels it's Robert Davi who's the hero, it's great having him as a main character instead of his usual supporting roles.
An underrated movie as well to me.

I like Creepshow 2 also and Phantasm 2, especially for the music.
The director of Phantasm 2 also did Bubba Ho-Tep and although almost a horror film The Beastmaster starring Marc Singer, released 25 years ago in august.(has anyone visited the pyramid in the movie? I think it's in a place called Lake Pyramid, in California).
Any other fans of Beastmaster? -

Devolution here,

Beastmaster is great. Only for the fact that Marc Singer would be in V later on.

WE are DEVO

Posted by james Andrews (Member # 1425) on :

I like V alot also, and have the pilot and the mini-series along with about 5 episodes of the series. I don't enjoy Marc Singer as much, but I like Michael Ironside.

Some of my favourite horror films:
Pet Sematary
The Blob 1988
Shocker
the House series
Nightmare On Elm Street 1,3,and four
Friday The 13th 4,6,7 and 8
Silver Bullet
The Gate

night of the living dead- scares me too.

i love movies with zombies in it.

Hi, I managed to get a copy of Night Of The Creeps from ebay, it contained 2 versions.
Do you like the line "Screaming like banshees!"?
I like the scene also when Tom Atkins speaks about his childhood sweetheart.
