I think it's an 80s film, possibly early 90s but from what I remember I'm sure it's 80's. A woman's sister is kidnapped / missing (I think), a friend points her in the direction of a mercenary / renegade (who is possibly the main character in some 'fictional' novel in the movie), they team up and go in search of the missing sister.

The only scene that sticks in my mind is set in a seedy nigthclub somewhere like colombia, Michael Sembello's 'Maniac' is playing in the background.

Mercenary character resembled Michael Biehn from what I remember, possibly called Jack.

Ive never seen Romancing the stone but it could also be Jakespeed.
