I liked this movie the first time I saw it on television; way back in 1986, directors still emulate Coppolas colour-in-black & white shots (e.g. 'Sin City') and though 'Outsiders' is the better film, 'Rumble Fish' retains an enigmatic, sometimes, elusive, appeal: the gang movie as surreal mediation / mumbling polemic on the ultimate futility of violence. Any 'Rumble Fish' fans here?

I tried to watch it. I loved "The Outsiders" and "Tex." I read "The Outsiders," "Tex," and "That Was Then, This is Now." So I figured I'd like "Rumble Fish." I was really disappointed in it and couldn't finish it.

Pettyfan, a lot of critics said the same thing and 'Rumble Fish' wasn't well liked when it was first released. And if I was expecting a movie like 'The Outisiders' I'd have been let down too, but since this is coming at the genere from a completely different angle; it works. Coppolla said the gang knife fight was influenced by 'A Clockwork Orange' and when you watch it now, you can really tell.

I feel the same way. Loved Matt Dillon (Still do!) and watched it and was disappointed. I watch it when its on TV though just cuz he looks so hot in it.

Just watched Rumble Fish, first time in 20 years I just love this film. Itīs soooo stylish. Awesome b/w cinematography and feel. And that strange score composed by Stewart Copeland fits perfectly.
I love the cast. Itīs huge. Coppola filmed this back-to-back with The Outsiders, retaining much of the same cast and crew. Matt Dillon, Mickey Rourke, Diane Lane, Dennis Hopper, Vincent Spano, Nicolas Cage, Chris Penn, Diana Scarwid, Laurence Fishburne, William Smith, Glenn Withrow, Tom Waits... I know, itīs a crazy cast.
The fight between Dillon and Withrow is fantastic. I wish that it would have been even longer. The choreographer spent a week designing the sequence.
Rourke is the legendary Motorcycle Boy. Dillon his brother Rusty James. Diane Lane is so pretty. William Smith the supercool cop.
Of course this movie was a box office disaster. Itīs just too artistic for common moviegoers. Even the legendary producer Robert Evans said "I was scared. I couldn't understand any of it."
I still have this very old Finnish VHS tape. Did you guys already get the blu-ray?

I watched Rumble Fish a few months ago. I thought visually it was stunning. Diane Lane was so beautiful. But, The movie really did kind of lack. I found it to be kind of generic in the story line.

Visually stunning and the acting was definitely masterful.. but wow.. I struggled to understand this movie. I had heard how great it was and was excited to finally watch it .. but definitely felt a bit let down at the conclusion of it I even researched it afterwards hoping for clarity.
My mistake was that I expected an extension of S.E. Hinton's brilliant novel/film "The Outsiders". I truly wasn't expecting such an artsy film.

"Rumble Fish" is a very unusual film, and is a strange follow-up to "The Outsiders".
I did find it extremely arty re: the storyline, b&w cinematography, dialogue, etc. It definitely seemed like an indy film that would have come out in the '90's, more than an '80's teen film.
