I'm a new member, just loving the site! My favourite films are the fantasy adventures Willow, Big Trouble in Little China and Labyrinth. Can anyone recommend any other fantasy adventures or films along these lines?
Thanks

Welcome Sir Didimus (or in the immortal words of Cameron: "Gadamnit call me sir!")
As far as fantasy adventure goes, it doesn't get much better than 'Ladyhawke' with Rutger Hauer and Michelle Pfeiffer. Great film.

How about Legend with Tom Cruise and Mia Sara (Sloan from Ferris Bueller) or The Neverending Story?
Posted by Sir Didimus (Member # 4701) on :
Thanks Kash I will def check out Ladyhawke.
Cindy, I have seen Legend and NeverEnding story and absolutely love them both!!!
Thanks anyway!

What about The Goonies? Ain't nothing better than that!

I love these kind of films too. Here are some that I think are cool.
Clash of the Titans The Sword and the Sorcerer The Beastmaster Krull Dragonslayer Flash Gordon (It's the movie from 1980. It's not medieval, but it's a cool fantasy movie.) Conan the Barbarian Conan the Destroyer

Are you allergic to anime? if not then these Studio Ghibli films should be right up your street:
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Winds (1984) Laputa: Castle in the Sky (1986) Princess Mononoke (1997) Spirited Away (2001)
Ghibli has ceated a lot more anime over the years but I think these are at the higher end of the fantasy spectrum. At the reality end of the spectrum lies Grave of the Fireflies (1988), you can't watch it without crying but I highly reccomend it.

Thanks Ali I have watched Goonies as many times as I've had hot dinners "HEY YOU GUUYYYYSS!!!!" But cheers all the same.
Wizard, would I find these anime films easily on e bay?
Brandon 777 thanks for all your recommendations..I know most of them but answer me this, is Beastmaster the one with the ferret or something? And are there three witches in it?
Posted by Valley (Member # 1322) on :
The one with the three witches is "Clash Of The Titans", which is mysteriously cool. Also, you get to tangle with Medusa.
"Flash Gordon" is a cult classic. The soundtrack from Queen rocks.
I don't know if "Highlander" qualifies as Fantasy Adventure, but I'll mention it nonetheless.
I just thought of one more, how about "Time Bandits"? A young boy accidently joins a band of dwarves as they jump from time-period to time-period looking for treasure to steal.
Posted by Sir Didimus (Member # 4701) on :
Valley, I know Time Bandits but have not seen it for a long time. You've put me in the mood now! Yes I know about the witches in clash of the titans but are there three witches in Beastmaster? Also, what is the film about a male witch who cuts someone's finger off to get a special ring?
Posted by The Wizard (Member # 533) on :
Sir Didimus, yep they probably are available on eBay, they've all been released on region 2 DVD so are available from places like play.com sentit.com etc., however if you're a subtitles fan and not a dubbing fan then you may want to look at getting the region 3 versions from somewhere like cd-wow.com (search for Ghibli) as they often have Japanese 5.1 audio whilst the US/UK versions often only have Japanese 2.0 audio.
Disney have bought the western distribution rights to the Studio Ghibli films (I think they're jealous of the quality ), providing them with an English dub so the kids can enjoy them too, personally I can only watch them in original Japanese with subtitles.

Yes. Beastmaster has three witches and there are two ferrets that he communicates with.

I think that's "Warlock", but I'm not sure.

Come on guys, all together now.....THE PRINCESS BRIDE!!!
Posted by Sir Didimus (Member # 4701) on :
The Princess Bride was on TV the other day. Watching it brought back memories for me as my dad hired this for me and my friends to watch at like my eighth or ninth birthday party. Fred Savage was such a cutey, shame he didn't stay that way.
Posted by Saint_in_London (Member # 2575) on :
You also might want to check this one out, I saw it back in the 80s. I can't remember if its any good, although it seems to have produced another 3 in the series according to IMDB so seems it must be atleast popular
Welcome. I'm new here also. Oh yeah, Big Trouble in Little China was great. The critics bashed it at the time, but I consider it a classic.
Have you seen the Boy Who Could Fly?
Posted by Bionic Bigfoot (Member # 2490) on :
I noticed someone mentioned Krull. That was a cool fantasy flick!
Posted by Sir Didimus (Member # 4701) on :
Ed,
Yes, Big Trouble IS a classic!!! My favourite scene is the street fight scene with the three storms. Oh and I love when Kurt Russell dresses in the suit and glasses and goes to the brothel looking for a girl with green eyes. He is hilarious! Yes I have watched The boy Who Could Fly, although not for a very long time. I remember I had such a crush on Eric!

The labyrinth is my absolute favorite fantasy movie. I know it beginning to end, word for word, it's pretty sad really. Anyway, her are ac couple of other good ones.
Dark Crystal The Last Unicorn Unico Secret of Nimh Merlin Flight of the Navigator and of course, the lord of the rings, not really 80's but still a fantastic fantasy film.
Posted by Sir Didimus (Member # 4701) on :
hbsjack,
IF SHE'D KEPT GOIN THAT WAY SHE WOULD'VE GONE STRAIGHT TO THAT CASTLE!
I'm so glad someone loves Labyrinth as much as I do. It is a classic! I have just bought a really cool Labyrinth T-shirt actually.
Posted by hbsjack (Member # 4639) on :
LOL! Yeah, that's my 'anytime' movie. If I'm happy, sad, bored, angry, whatever. It's the best. My least fave line from that movie is "Well, come on feet" Who talks like that?? I would have stayed there with David Bowie and all his spandex glory and help raise my baby goblin brother, but, hey, that's just me
Posted by Sir Didimus (Member # 4701) on :
Yeh me too! I would spend my time with the talking rock faces and I would love to smell the bog of eternal stench just for the craic. Tho the orange goblins (I forget their names!?..the ones that dance around the fire) scared and still scare the crap out of me. So I would prob want to go home after a while.:-)

Posted by The Mouse Avenger (Member # 4406) on :
Secret Of NIMH Labyrinth
And best of all...Rock & Rule!
Posted by Sir Didimus (Member # 4701) on :
hbsjack...
I have to say that I think I have seen most of the films everyone has suggested. I just really enjoy that genre. I am a real child at heart and films such as Labyrinth and Willow etc were in the cinema when I was about 7 and 8 so I feel very nostalgic about them. I don't recall Unico or Merlin from your list so I'd like to check them out. I must say that I was having difficulty thinking of the exact quotes from Labyrinth so I watched it last night! So be prepared for some more. I laughed my heart out when Ludo said "SAWAH FRIEND?" Have you ever seen the making of it? It's on the DVD it's amazing how they did it! I mean there is a little woman inside Hoggle and two guys did the part of Ludo.
Sir D

The Secret of NIMH was a good one, wasn't it What is "Rock & Rule?
Posted by hbsjack (Member # 4639) on :
Sir Didimus...
I had no idea there were actually people in there! I just figured they were all muppets. That's very cool. I will have to check that out. Does that come with the dvd when you buy the movie? Oh, and I'm prepared for more quotes, so bring it on
Btw, the unico movies are great. They are hard to find, though. I found a couple on ebay, but have not purchased them just yet. Merlin was good, I don't know for sure if it's 80's or not. I can't remember who's in it.

Mouse..
I checked it out. It looks pretty cool:) So, I'm guessing I can't rent that at blockbuster, huh? Have any suggestions on how to watch/buy it...cheap?
Posted by Sir Didimus (Member # 4701) on :
hbsjack...
You have to get the "collectors edition" DVD. It is fascinating! It gives a detailed insight into how they made most scenes in the film. Everything is animatronics- hardly anything has been computerised. The studio settings are amazing and huge! I mean there really is a bog of eternal stench!!!! Oh and this freaky thing happened...The designer who initially drew sketches of what Sarah's baby brother would look like, was interviewed. He said he drew sketches of a baby (it even showed these provisional sketches). Then he said after this his wife had a baby and it turned out to look exactly like the sketches so they actually used his baby as Toby. It is mad! Did you know Jennifer Connolly was only 14 in real life when she made the film? "SEARCH ME... WE'RE JUST THE KNOCKERS!"
Posted by hbsjack (Member # 4639) on :
That's pretty cool about the baby, a little weird, but still cool. I knew Connolly was young in that movie, but I had no idea she was THAT young. I thought she was like, 17, at least. You know how they always cast people who are 5-10 years older than the part they are actually playing. You know, the camera adds 10 pounds but takes off 10 years, theory. I just figured she was older.
"THROUGH DANGERS UNTOLD AND HARDSHIPS UN-NUMBERED..I HAVE FOUGHT MY WAY HERE TO THE CASTLE..BEYOND THE GOBLIN CITY TO TAKE BACK THE CHILD YOU HAVE STOLEN. FOR MY WILL IS AS STRONG AS YOURS..AND MY KINGDOM IS AS GREAT.....DAMN! I CAN NEVER REMEMBER THAT LINE"
Posted by Sir Didimus (Member # 4701) on :
"YOU HAVE NO POWER OVER ME!"
That reminds me of that episode of friends when Chandler says.."HOW MANY CAMERAS ARE ACTUALLY ON YOU?"
I have never seen JC in anything else. Seen anygood films recently? I watched The Family Stone the other night I really enjoyed it.
Posted by hbsjack (Member # 4639) on :
That is one of the funniest lines from Friends. I love when the 'fat monica' dances, it's hilarious! JC has been in a few other good ones...A Beautiful Mind, Dark Water. Other good movies, hmmm? You'll probably be shocked, but I just saw Rudy for the first time about a week ago. Fantastic! I didn't realize I'd been missing out. Haven't seen the Family Stone yet, but plan to. I'm kind of a sap for chic flicks. I saw Just Like Heaven recently and I liked it. 16 Blocks was good. Fever Pitch, really funny. I want to see North Country, but havn't yet. I want to watch Brokback Mountain too, but my fiance won't watch it with me. I think that's a guy thing, something about their great 'Manhood' There is a guy I work with, he and his wife are really into artsy movies and theater and they said it was brilliant. I guess I'll have to check it out for myself...and by myself, lol. Oh, and Wedding Crashers, that was great. Owen and Vince were perfect for the roles.
Posted by hbsjack (Member # 4639) on :
Oh, one other one I just thought of. Remake of an older movie. The Time Machine. Seen it? I thought it was done really well, but it didn't get very good reviews. The whole riddle thing at the end when he figures out why he couldn't use the machine to save his fiances life, it was great.
Posted by Sir Didimus (Member # 4701) on :
I have never heard of Rudy, what's that about? I haven't seen Brokeback either but really want to as I LOVE Jake! Have u ever seen The Good Girl? I took my friend's little boy to see Ice age 2 today. They don't make kids movies the way they used to..listen to me, I'm only 26 and I'm talking like my granny. But I really feel that the new animated films lack the magic of their predecessors like Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast etc etc Is the time machine the one with Samantha Mumba in it? Have u ever seen the episode of Sex and the city with Vince Vaughn in it? It's really funny. As far as Friends goes, I absolutely LOVE when fat Monica dances..she always tires herself out, doesn't she?! I love when her and Ross do the "routine" for the New years Eve party! Also I love when she loses the weight and tries to get revenge on Chandler and ends up dropping the knife on his toe- I love when she holds the carrots and tries to look sexy! But favourite episodes are the Ross classics:
The leather pants The bleached teeth The tanning machine (one misissippi..)
I also love "The One where Ross finds out".

Sir D,
Those are some of the best episodes the tanning machine, the carrots, lol, and I love the 'routine' Do you remember the crazy guy that moved in with chandler after Joey moved out for a while, he had the goldfish cracker in the fish tank. Oh, there's just too many. Oh, are you refering to the one where he finds out about chandler and monica? I love when joey pieces it together with the eyelash curler, his expression is priceless. I haven't seen that episode of 'Sex' and I don't know if she was the one in that movie, I only saw it once. It didn't seem like a typical role for her though. Rudy, it's a football movie with a very young Sean Astin. It was really, really moving. Made me cry...happy tears, though. and yes, i've seen the good girl but it has been a long time. You know, I do miss the old kids movies, but even more, I miss the old kids cartoons. They just aren't near as cool as they used to be. I always loved Voltron
Posted by Sir Didimus (Member # 4701) on :
The One where Ross finds out is one of the early episodes (I think it's series two) when Ross finds out Rachel likes him (Rachel leaves a drunk message on his phone when she's out for dinner). I LOVE Eddie- they are brilliant episodes!!!! I love when Eddie puts the goldfish in his pocket. Also, when Joey moves back in and him and Chandler pretend to Eddie that they have always lived there together. I must say I have never heard of Voltron but maybe we didn't get it over here...or maybe u are showing your age..ONLY JOKING!!!

that was a little below the belt, wasn't it?? Lol, I'm only a year older than you, thank you. Maybe you guys just weren't cool enough for it to air over there. How about Pinky and the Brain. I'm sure you've heard of them?!?! I know the friends episode, I confused it with another, but it is a funny one. I'm so glad they finally ended up together. I always hoped Joey and Pheobe would get together. So, where do you live over there? Ever been to the U.S.?
