I recorded this film off TV last night but haven't watched it yet. I've looked at the page about it on the movies smart menu and just wondered if any of you guys have seen it and what your thoughts on it are.

In my opinion, Blow Out is one of Brian DePalma's best films. It's also one of his most simple. Where most of his flicks feature complicated storylines with twists a-plenty, Blow Out features a relatively sparse plot with one central character. That character is John Travolta as a sound effects guy that records something he shouldn't have recorded. Good movie and very suspenseful.

Stu, I really like this movie too. There are clips of it in the movie Terror in the Aisles.
I know Nancy Allen and John Travolta dated around this time and they were also in Carrie together.
Brian DePalma did Dressed to Kill and Nancy Allen was in that too.
She is someone I would like to see a current picture of, I haven't seen her in anything for a long time.
Let us know if you like it Stu. I think it has a cool storyline. It is different.

I just looked Nancy Allen up, I found a picture of her, and she looks pretty much the same. She was married to Brian DePalma...I never knew that. I can't believe she is 55 years old already. Wow!.

I got round to watching this movie this morning and it was great. I didn't really have any expectations, but I enjoyed it.
Like you said Isis, it is different and has a cool storyline.
I will add this to my list of movies to get on DVD.

I am hoping someone can help me. I watched a movie around 1982 on tv that scared the crap out of me called something like "Poodle Doll" or "Voodoo Doll." The movie was about a lady who has a doll with a chain around its next. The chain falls off and the doll comes to life and attacks the woman. Does anyone remember the name of this movie for me? I would love to watch it again and see if it was as bad as I remember.

It didn't hurt that Quentin Tarantino himself has long considered Blow Out as one of his all-time favorite films.
Part of the story is very loosely inspired by an actual incident in the early 70's involving U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy and his secretary Mary Jo Kopechne on a bridge in Chappaquidd|ck Island, near Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts. Kennedy pled guilty to a charge of leaving the scene of an accident after causing injury. (He called his lawyer first, instead of notifying the local police.) He later received a sentence of two months in jail, which was suspended. Kennedy's own wife was pregnant at the time, but later miscarried.
The scandal has haunted him throughout his political career and effectively ended any chances of him becoming President.

Cool, I didn't know about that.
I bet there are a lot of films that have some sort of inspiration from a real life event that your average movie fan doesn't know about.

Great film written/directed by De Palma, both Travolta and Allen were excellent whilst John Lithgow turned in another top performance as the insane CIA killer.
De Palma is, in many ways, as much of a political filmmaker as Oliver Stone, and 'Blow Out' has each character represent an aspect in this morality play about conspiracy & conscience. John is the above avergage everyman, dismayed at people's lack of awareness about whats going on behind the scenes, Nancy is innocence/naivety whislt Lithcow is the monsterous incarnation of unchecked politcal power.
Surely a movie of such merit deserves a 'special edition' release on DVD?

It certainly does.
Another great De Palma movie that doesn't seem to get mentioned much is 'Body Double'. Essentially a remake of 'Rear Window', but with an 80's vibe.
