This movie features Christian Bale in one of his greatest roles: that of a psychotic yuppie in 1980s New York. Any 80s fan should check it out. The music, fashion, etc... are all about the 80s.

Ever since he has become popular with Batman I am kind of interested in watching this show, I have heard a lot about it. I didn't know that it was set in the 80s though, so this makes it even more interesting to me. I know that Leonardo DiCaprio was originally sought for the lead in American Psycho.
Thanks Motley for more insight on this one, it is one that I have always wondered about but don't ever hear much about!

They have just released a collector's edition of the movie on DVD. It has a really strong cult-like internet following. I first saw it on HBO like 4 years ago. The only other ones I knew in the movie were Reese Witherspoon, Jared Leto, and Wilhelm Dafoe (sp?)...

Yeah it has really good actors in it, I am excited to see it now. I know that it has become very popular since it has been released on DVD. It does have a following so it must be pretty good.

This is a script that sought after by many in Hollywood, but the movie didn't score with the general public maybe because of the subject matter. The soundtrack had The Cure, New Order, and Tom Tom Club. This is another movie that the book was way better than the film it spawned in my opinion. Decent movie none the less.
I loved the fact that it was directed by a woman..

What is it actually about?? Is he a killer?? Is it suppose to be funny or be scary??
I am kind of interested in it too. I am giving another newer movie a shot today... we rented The Ring, so we'll see how that goes.
It is has been so stinkin hot, you can't do anything but stay in the air conditioning, or you'll die outside, so I need movies to watch.

He is a killer. It's gory not really scary.
But the conversations Patrick Bateman has with his friends are funny; there is a whole scene just with them comparing their business cards.

Does gory mean horribly violent and graphic?? An example of what I mean is Cape Fear with Robert DeNiro..that movie was way too violent for me, and so was Hannibal. Those kind of things are stuff I can't take...Friday the 13th I can take though.

If u can stand Friday the 13th then in my opinion, u could stand American Psycho. I have the special edition DVD. It has the movie itself, deleted scenes, and a special about the 80s called "The 80s:Downtown" on it. My fave scene was when he was thouroughly giving his opinion of Huey Lewis and The News' career to the prostitute and the call girl in his apartment. Isis, if you like horror movies, then I think you'd like it. But I wouldn't let kids watch it...

This, for me, is the most entertaining movie of the new decade bar none (forget the vastly overrated Donnie Darko, good as that is). Frankly Isis I'd be astounded if you don't like it; all the aforementioned people have the feel of genuinely acting their parts (add the gorgeous Chloe Sevigny and Samantha Mathis to that list ;-), not just phoning in bland performances as per the norm these days. In that sense, it feels very 80s in style/content, not merely period; a great amount of care and attention appears to have went into making it, and that's pretty rare these days!
But Christian Bale... just towers above everything else in this movie. His characterization will, in decades to come I think, be regarded among the great screen performances of all-time, up there with Travis Bickle, Tony Montana et al. Look at the guy, how could it not???
