Hi everyone... Im sure everyone at the rewind has a few movies they absolutly love and they think deserve more attention than theyve got. Well, I hope people will read this post and put down a few movies they recommend for others to see. I'll go first since this is my lame idea.

Yay...I hired that fim out when I was about thirteen, around the time I hired tremors and little monsters, and I have never seen it since, not on TV or anywhere on video...I was almost beginning to think it was just a weird dream I once had.....were there sequels and stuff??? I think there might have been.....btw the way I'm pretty tired from all the welding I've been doing today, and now I have to go dance in a club and drop water all over myself...boy I sure hope I get that dance scholarship. I think there is a Gate II, you can pick up The Gate on DVD cheap on ebay.
I also rented it out on video, my brother turned the electric off as i was watching it, i ran up screaming to my parents room, on the way back down he had turned the electric back on and i got into trouble.
Those poster pins i put in his bed did the trick though, revenge is ever so sweet.

The Prince of Pennsylvania - Keanu Reeves in one of his earlier roles, also has Fred Ward who was in the first two Tremors films The Quiet Earth - a man wakes up and finds *everyone* including animals/birds has gone missing Paperhouse - a girl falls ill and starts having nightmares involving the drawings she's doing Pulse - there's something in the wires, an evil force trying to kill everyone through anything electrical Malcolm - a shy introverted character who's an inventive genius Rikky and Pete - by the same people who did Malcolm, another inventive genius who lands himself into trouble so skips town with his sister and ends up working a goldmine Grace Quigley - Catherine Hepburn's last starring role, she employs a hitman (Nick Nolte) to kill her as she's fed up with life but he can't go through with it as their friendship grows, a great 'unknown' black comedy

I was meaning to do this ages ago. Some of these have yet to be mentioned on the Rewind:
'Hero at Large' (1980): The late John Ritter plays an aspiring actor who becomes a hero. It’s a rather clunky morality tale, but it’s fun to watch, and it leaves you feeling good.
'Static' (1985): Keith Gordon wrote and starred in this Indie flick about an odd boy who’s parents have died, who claims to have built a TV that can tune in to heaven. It’s one of those "what was that film where…?" type movies, that you can never get out of your head.
'The Chocolate War' (1988): Keith Gordon again, this time he doesn't star, but directs Robert Cormiers novel about a boy attending a Catholic school who’s recently lost his mother. He rebels against ‘the Vigils’ (a secret society that that runs the school), and inadvertently finds himself the center of a schoolwide rebellion.
'The Bay Boy' (1985): Kiefer Sutherland stars as a shy boy in pre-war Canada who witnesses a murder. It's not a mystery though, it's really a coming of age drama. It has a wonderful period feel to it. Nice film, nice music too.
'Crazy Moon' (1986): Keifer again! (Is there a pattern?) This is kind of like a junior ‘Children of a Lesser God’. Keifer plays an oddball young Man that falls in love with a deaf Girl.
'Oh! Heavenly Dog' (1980): Chevy Chase plays a PI that gets murdered. He then comes back to life as a Dog (Benji) to solve his own murder, while trying to save Jane Seymour from a similar fate.
'Let It Ride' (1988): Richard Dreyfuss plays a gambling addicted cabbie that has a VERY good day, while his best friend David Johansson has a very bad day. It features a nice role for a young Cynthia Nixon as a Girl who goes from innocence to gambling addiction in a few hours.
I was going to mention 'The Quiet Earth', but the Wiz beat me to it.

Mystic Pizza - now just a footnote in Julia Robert's pre Pretty Woman career.
Time Bandits - Time travelling dwarves with an all star cast.
Summer School - Mark Harmon teaches his students how to scam free sunglasses.
The boy who could fly - really sweet film about, you guessed it, a boy who could fly.
Space camp - Lea Thompson and Joaquin Pheonix find themselves in orbit and running short of oxygen. Hilarity ensues.

"Kramer Vs. Kramer On Golden Pond The Incredible Shrinking Woman Coal Miner's Daughter Carrie Swamp Thing"
Isis, if I've heard of 'em, they're bound to be pretty well-known. C'mon, Carrie and Swamp Thing? Which reminds me of a couple of episodes of Big Wolf on Campus based on those. I liked the episodes better than the movies (To be fair, I never saw all of The Swamp Thing--I might've seen a sequel for all I know. Carrie was just sad, though. BWoC had a happy ending for the episode. ).
I like a lot of supernatural comedies, a genre that isn't quite as popular as, say, romantic comedies or action-y action. Most of the movies I have, though, are pretty well-known. Let's see if I can think of some of the lesser-known ones . . .
My Boyfriend's Back- To be honest, I just ordered that one and saw it when I was a kid, but I remember liking it, and I was right about Little Monsters, so why not this one? The plot in a nutshell: The main character is killed in a misfired (quite literally) plan to impress a girl, then comes back. Zombie humor ensues.
Tremors- I dunno, did these movies make it really big? I know they get a lot of attention on Sci-fi. Giant worms, huzzah!
Drop Dead Fred- Pheobe Cates has an imaginary friend . . . except, y'know, he comes back when she's all grown up.
Earth Girls Are Easy- Jeff Goldblum as a space alien! Plus Geena Davis tries to figure out how long she can get her nails before someone's fatally injured.
Little Monsters- If you don't know about this movie by now, you've been living in a plastic bubble.
Transylvania 6-5000- More Jeff Goldblum stuff. I love that guy. The plot: Two reporters go to Transylvania to find Frankenstein's monster and meet some kooky characters along the way. And gasp! Kramer!
Almost Heroes- Almost Unheard Of. It airs on Comedy Central every once and awhile. Chris Farley and Matthew Perry try to beat Lewis and Clark with their ragtag team of ye olde losers--Some things discovered are that Indians are goofy and eagles are not good.
Corky Romano- Honestly I'm just mentioning this to see if anyone remembers it. It came out a couple years ago. I didn't like it that well. There's a reason it fell into obscurity.
Death Becomes Her- Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn fight over Bruce Willis! They don't manage to hold themselves together well.

You are talking about obscure movies. I see that you have some gems in there what exactly makes a movie obscure? Because it wasn't out for that long? Because your friends don't remember it? Or because you think people haven't heard of it? I think they are the movies that were on HBO at 5:30 in the morning on a Saturday that people swear don't exist.

This is a cool subject, but naming obscure movies from the 80's is difficult here. Maybe the topic should be obscure to the outside world. Movies like "Tremors", "Little Monsters", & the Meryl Streep/Bruce Willis "Death Becomes Her" are definitley not obscure to me.
Actually almost every movie "we" enjoy is obscure to most people. I mean try starting a conversation with some work buddies about "The Heavenly Kid" or "Can't Buy Me Love" sometime and see the reaction you'll get.
Throw in a few zingers like "If they attack the car, save the radio" or "Babe said it was good for my complexion" or the best "No other Val Dude can touch me" and quickly you will realize they don't get you. it's been ages since i have seen swamp thing. they always show part 2 on cable but not the first and part 2 is even on dvd i think?
lots of the movies mentioned here are hardly 'unknown' to most of us.
but true, some have not been talked about much here.
FAST FOOD is a good mention, C.T. i would also recommend, FAST FORWARD. breakdancing, good music, big dance-off at the end..good stuff. isis, check that one out if you can.

One persons obscure movie is another ones favourite.If it wasn't for the likes of Sweet Peaches, The Wizard, Isis, Ronnie etc i wouldn't have picked up half the movies i now have.
That's the great thing about The Rewind, there's always some intresting recommendations.

"Crossing Delancey"...
I keep on telling everybody to see this. A very underrated romantic comedy starring the lovely Amy Irving and Peter Riegert (who I keep on confusing with Paul Gleason from "The Breakfast Club"), I feel this is as exemplary an 80s romance as "Pretty In Pink" or "Valley Girl".

Being a big ‘Brat Pack’ fan when I was younger I’d go with
Wisdom The Boys Next Door - Charlie Sheen and Maxwell Caulfield Disciples of Justice - cant find it on IMDB but rememebr that it wasnt great but had loads of people we know in. The Promised Land - Jason Gedrick, Kiefer and Meg Ryan Mazes and Monsters - Tom Hanks

The Last Dragon ( although I always remember it as being called the Golden Dragon)? This is a great film.
I still don’t think you can beat the Drunken Master with Chackie Chan. It was made in 78 but we used to watch it on Video in the 80s. don’t think I knew anyone who had a video in 78?

I have seen that, and it was excellent! I loved Michael Caine, and the ridiculous amount of choreography and timing really paid off. I've been looking for a copy of this movie myself but I can't seem to find it anywhere.

I love 'Noises Off' too Stitch/Brode! It never fails to make me laugh, especially with the pacing of the movie (Cleveland, haha!) and its brilliant cast!
The DVD is a bargain over here in the UK Brode! I think Play.com has it for around £5.99, so I'd purchase it if you have a multiregion player!

Hahahaha...Wesley Crusher! I laughed out loud on that one. I love Wil Wheaton and met him once at a Star Trek Convention (yes, that's right, I went to one ). He was the coolest dude. Wow, CT, I forgot about D.C. Cab. Great movie!! Gary Busey was insane! And one of Isis's favorites, Jill Schoelen was in it too. I wish this was on DVD. There was also a really good Irene Cara song at the end when they are in the parade!

This is my take on what makes a movie obscure:
Just about everyone loves "The Breakfast Club" on many levels -- casting, dialogue, soundtrack, etc. It makes "the best of the '80s" lists time and again.
Conversely another '80s teen angst movie --"Baby, It's You" with Rosanna Arquette [1983] -- isn't even listed on this site's movie synopses to the left of our screens. It's the same tried-and-true formula of teens coming of age...yet virtually unknown here.
To me that makes a movie 'obscure' but all the more reason to give it a watch, especially we Rosanna fans. She still makes movies, has always taken chances with her career...big snaps to her for representin the 'seasoned hot chick' crowd!

I always think the Fortress a made for TV movie by HBO pictures from 1986 is a must see. It is hard to come by, every once in awhile it pops up on TV. Very good flick set in the outback of Austrailia that centers around a group of school kids that get kidnapped by four men who wear masks of popular Austrailian characters such as Father Christmas, Mack the Mouse, Dabby Duck, and some Cat face. They take then off into the outback and put them in a cave where they end up escaping only to run into them again. Very good film.

I love all of the movies mentioned, but I have never heard anyone on here mention the 80's movie "Recruits." I don't even remember whether or not is was on at the movies. I just remember renting it on VHS. I still wonder if it will be released on DVD someday...

A few more:
Local Hero (1983) - an excellent slow paced film with some great subtle humour in it, an American comes to a Scottish village to negotiate the sale of the whole village and some of the coast for a large oil company he works for, but when his time is up he doesn't want to leave
The Coca-Cola Kid (1985) - a quirky but great movie, an American Coca-Cola representative called The Kid is sent to Australia to try and sell Coke in a part of the country that doesn't have any sales, contrary to what the title may allude, it's not an hour and a half Coke advert, the drink was merely used to tell the story
Chungking Express (1994) - two stories of love-struck cops in Hong Kong, you have to like that old classic California Dreaming song because the 2nd story uses it a lot
Autumn Moon (1992) - a twentysomething guy comes to Hong Kong looking for good food, traditional stuff, and while fishing meets this girl who he becomes friends with, he speaks Japanese, she speaks Cantonese and the only way they can communicate is through broken English (I really wish this was released on DVD, I had to import an NTSC VHS of it)

here's a few more random horror/thriller's (from various decades) that are relatively unknown but in my oppinion well worth a watch!
100 feet from 2008 starring famke janssen,michael pare and is directed by eric red (cohen & tate,bad moon).
daft but fun 1990 killer baboon flick - shakma which features a pretty decent cast including the late great roddy mcdowall.
the wind aka edge of terror from 1986 starring meg foster,wings hauser,david mcCallum,steve railsback and directed by nico mastorakis and filmed on location on one of the many greek islands.
great hans zimmer score as well!
learning curve from 1998 which is more of a very dark natured drama than a horror about a supply teacher who has had enough of his misbehaving pupils so abducts them,strips them and throws them in a cage.
after that it's a fight for survival as the kids not only have to put up with the blistering texas heat but the cages have electric fences all the way around them.
plus worse still if they don't learn they don't eat!
great little low budget 90s drama.

hearts and armour (1983)
fun 1983 italian sword and sorcery fantasy that stars barbara de rossi and tanya roberts.
not seen this for years but remember quite enjoying it,from what i've read it was originally shot as a 4 hour mini series but then edited down to 98 minutes.
this is another one you don't hear mentioned to often which is a pity as it's a pretty decent rape revenge flick with a really great central performance from karen young and some pretty tense moments throughout.
very enjoyable action adventure from 1992 that i would say is not quite as obscure as some of the other titles but i would still bet not to many people know about it - fifty/fifty staring peter weller and airplane's robert hays.
a lot of fun this one and directed by charles martin smith who starred in american graffiti and the untouchables and also directed the awesome 1986 horror trick or treat.
