Well I was thinking about this last night and I know many of those that post here are students and probally most of us are short on cash or might not be able to afford college. So since there are like 2000 of us we should start a scholarship fund for members or children of members. Knowing that RP4L is only 16 and has probably 1 more year of High School to go she would be a good candidate for this scholarship. Also in a few years once this scholarship fund is off the ground probably Isis's children would be good candidates. It could also work for those of us that are still in college and might want to go on to graduate school we could apply for the scholarship! Also like wise if any of our members that graduated in the 80's think they might want to go back to school could apply for this scholarship. Those of us who are still in college could apply as well to cover undergraduate costs. I think we would need two people to take charge of this endeavor. A person to be incharge of the American front and a person incharge of the European front would be needed. If everone just donated one dollar (or pound) to the fund we would almost be able to cover housing for a student or atleast books(I know $2,000 dollars would be really helpful right now! those loans are adding up.). We could have two winners one in North America and one in Europe. They would have to submit an application of likes and interests and essay on why they feel deserving of this award and then the members of this site would vote on who they think deserves this award. Or so that there would be less bais we could elect a panel to take charge of this process. I know that it is a pretty lofty idea but it could be a really good one! Just think if everyone donated $20 how many people we could help!! Us 80's lovers have to stick together!!!! [Big Grin]

Of course many of the finer details still need to be figured out I mean it is just an idea. As always I would love your guys input on if you think this will work!! [Big Grin]

Also if anyone thinks of a better name please suggest it !!! [Smile]

Devolution here,

My views on this. A noble cause, but of the 2000 people on this list you must understand that many of them are from the Karate Kid website. I don't know, a scholarship based on 80's things?!?!?! I would probably contribute to it, there has to be a cool kid here or there that could use it. My feelings are that it would have to be discussed by a board, and I don't feel that we are in a position geographically to do this. It might happen though.

We are DEVO

As I said just an idea but... hey the karate kid came out in the 80's lol!!! [Big Grin] True it might be difficult to organize but if enough people are interested I am sure it is possible. Being a teacher I am sure you are aware of how many scholarships there are out there. They have scholarships based purely on your hair color or what hand you write with. So why not the 80's scholarship. One scholarship I saw in one of my massive scholarship searches required that the applicant be a graduate of any high school in Smith county, who is of Chinese decent and must be legally blind. So that scholarship basically applies to one person in this world as long as they apply to it!!

But you are right it should be something that is voted on but... I mean I don't think that anyone of should be able to come on this site and ask for money. Like the "I need a new car fund" probably wouldn't be a good cause for all of us to get behind!LOL

Still, I don't think that geography should be too much of a problem if everyone wanted to do this. ~ Thanks for the input!! [Big Grin]

I would contribute to anything I believe was a good cause. I only have 1 son, and his college-is already paid for, if he plans on going, so he's pretty lucky.

My little sister, from the Big Brother/Big Sisters, just put herself through college, and got every scholarship out there, even if it was $100, by writing an essay on something. She worked for a company that paid her schooling, so it was hard, she has one credit to go and then has her Master's Degree.

I am not real sure about all the technical stuff you need to do, but it can't be too complicated, I mean they open scholarships under the names of alot of people, in just dedication of their memory.

I actually have never checked out the Karate Kid site, but I can't understand what they talk about all the time?? I loved the first Karate Kid, but I have a hard time finding new things to say on here about all different subjects. And you all know, I never seem to be at a loss for words, but it's true.

Yeah, I mean we could do a whole group thing on certain other 80's movies that everyone likes, like the Breakfast Club, or Sixteen Candles, but you'd eventually run out of stuff to say and get bored, so how come the Karate Kid has such staying power. I mean, my son takes Tae Kwan Do lessons, and my own Uncle owns a Karate School, and his daughter even competed in Las Vegas at Caesars' in a huge tournament, and that still doesn't give me a whole lot to say, I just said it all. Do you think I should go ask them?????

The other hard thing about a fund, is if you can't get 1 word out of some people, how can you get 1 dollar out of them?

well, i would gladly donate or contribute in whatever way possible. there are other causes that i help out with , but none of them are for any college funds. so, this would be a great way to hopefully help someone with their education in financial terms. i know how hard it is, not having the funds to put yourself through school. and we all know how expensive school is these days.

The Karate Kid site isn't as busy as it used to be. Most of the regulars who I used to talk to there have dissapeared. [Frown]

You should read some of our old posts. They could get very interesting at times.

As for the scholarship, how would you pick the deserving canidates and who would control the money?

Oh, I do have another Karate Kid connection, our one fish is named: Mr. Mioghi-sp?.

You mean Miyagi? LOL, I call my cat Danielsan. I'm sure he'd like to meet your Mr. Miyagi. [Big Grin]

I bet your cat wouldn't. I think my fish would eat him, he has grown just like the fish out of water... Dr. Seuss book. He is way to big to flush now, so we hope he lives forever. That fish eats everything, and almost every other fish we have put in with him, has vanished without a trace.

See it was just a good thing to think about! [Big Grin] Of course the logistics would need to be worked out but it would be too bad. All you need to do is get a p.o. box at a central location with a central person to control it. Then you get a small board of members to take charge of the fund. Of course everyone that posts at this site must know who is in charge not only to help support the fund but also prevent any corruption that could occur. Then we could award the recipient of the scholarship at our first annual Fast-rewind gala!!! [Razz] I mean if we all plan on getting together anyways it could be a really great shindig!!! Either here in the states or over in the UK. I know I love London. Well I was only there for 2 days but I had a great time!! I know I know I think BIG even enormous. But I love helping others it was just one way that we could do so!!! [Big Grin] Yea for the ELSF!!!! [Big Grin]

We should start a fund to get people plane tickets to get to our reunion. That would be a good thing, huh???

That would be a good fund. Lets save money to all meet at a central location and have a big 80s party. Maybe we can book some talent like Corey Feldman to come and grace us with his presence. Wait a sec, didn't I say talent? Hmmmmm.....

Posted by TresFoxy (Member # 542) on :

That would be awesome to do as well!!! [Smile] Plane tickets for al of us!! Great I wouldn't mind that!! It would be awesome to meet all of you guys in person!!! [Big Grin] And I'm sure we could get a couple of 80's stars they love the publicity. I mean I'm sure they all say htey hate if but deep down they love being remembered. Then the ELSF could be lauched at the reunion!!! [Smile]
