I don't know if any of you are baseball fans, but what was the highlight or lowlight of the 80's in baseball for you? Mine would have to be the 1986 World Series, where those poor Red Sox inexplicably lost in dramatic fashion. Also loved the scene where Ferris and co. went to the Cubs game. Swing batter swing!
Speaking of the Cubs, did anyone watch the Cubs and Braves game last night. In the VIP section longtime Cubbies fan John Cusack was watching the game with DB Sweeney, the guy who played Shoeless Joe Jackson in Eight Men out. Kewl! A Cubs and Red Sox World Series would be adream come true!

I've been an Angel fan since 1983 and going to games 6 and 7 of the series last year were a longtime dream.
Along with Bill Buckner, my Angels were part of a notorious 80s moment with the Dave Henderson/Donnie Moore incident.
Theres also the bad ump call in the 85 series;
George Bretts pinetar deal;
But Buckner tops them all.

Can I squeak in there with the Reds sweeping the series from the A's in 1990? I was attending school at Univ. of Cincinnati. Man, downtown was crazy on the night of the fourth game when they swept! Which does bring back an 80's fond memory...Ah! my Freshman year of College, 1989, what a great city! (Cincinnati)

Growing up in NY in the 80's was a bad time to be a true blue yankee fan. Don't let people tell you about the Yankees when in 86 they were all Mets fans! Things I distinct recall reading or watching..
July 4, 1983, Dave Righetti's no hitter Aug 85 Seaver 300 win, Carew 3000 hit on the same day. 1982 ALCS, when the kid pulled the ball out of Molitors(I believe) glove in the outfield, but it didn't matter Brewers won anyway. 1989 NLCS Will Clark abusing Greg Maddux like a red headed Stepchild with 2 homeruns 1988 Orel Hershiser 59 scoreless innings in a row. 1989 yankees trade away Rickey Henderson. July 1987 Don Mattingly's 8 homeruns 8 games in a row.

What! What about the Cubs being up 2 games to none vs. the Pods in 1984. They then dropped the next 3 and lost the NLCS. In Chicago they already started printing WS hats and tees. There was a big fire after game 5 on the NLCS that year.

For me it was watching the Brewers lose the World Series in game 7 in 1982. I still am a Brewers fan although they're better at losing than winning these days. Even though they've done nothing for 20 years, when they finally do it'll make it all the more sweeter!

In 1986 I became obsessed with the then extremely losing team: The Atlanta Braves. It was when they were getting all of the young pitchers that ended up leading them to a lot of their success in the 90's. John Smoltz, Tom Glavine, Zane Smith, and Paul Assenmacher (sp sorry Paul). I was absolutely in love with Dale Murphy he was so awesome. He has like 8 kids or so. I even got a lot of baseball cards still from the late 80's.
I also was a big Steve Sax (L.A. Dodgers) fan.

I was an Expos fan (still am), when Rick Monday of the Dodgers homered to eliminate the Expos from playoff contention in 81 my heart was broken. Fastforward to the same kind of heartache in 94, where the Expos were the best team in baseball, but the strike ruined it. In a perfect world the expos would have maybe faces the yankees. Such a shame. My favourite player was a Yankee, Don Mattingly with Wase boggs a close second. I got to see some Red Sox and Yankees games when I went on some trips to Boston and the Yankees in the late 80's. I liked the Yankees more back then when they weren't as good. they had Rickey henderson, Ron Guidry, Mike Pagliuaro and Dave Winfield. But Don was the man, I was so upset that back problems shortened his career and that he only got to play in one playoff series as a wildcard. If he remained healthy he would have joined Boggs as a world champion in 96 and the Hall of Fame. Shucky Darn!

I'm a Brewers fan and remember Gorman Thomas striking out to end game 7. There were 3 thing you could execpt from Gorman Thomas during a game. 1. Hit a HomeRun 2. Run into a wall 3. Strikeout! This is what he did best!!

Actually I think Devo is right. Reggie Jackson and Gorman Thomas both hit 39 homers in 82 to lead the American league.
The Brewers were awesome in the 80s, its such a shame they havent done so well in the last twenty years. I say we need to bring their old uniforms and logos back for good luck!

The only baseball game I've ever seen was when I went on holiday to Atlanta back in about 2010 (it might have been earlier) and it was the braves vs Miami marlins in about 100 degree heat,my head was pounding by the end of the game and I think I was cooked on all sides.
Good game but boy that was hot!

this baseball thriller - night game comes out on blu ray shortly starring roy scheider,shot in galveston texas home of the houston astros (so i believe i've read that right,i'm from the uk so i'm not to certain about the whole baseball scene though i have watched the braves play before).
were houston quite a succesful team?
i'm sure i saw this way back but can remember very little from it,anyone else out there seen night game before?

Yep. I even saw this in a theatre--I think that there may have even been two other folks who bought tickets with me--but I haven't thought about it in forever. Apart from the Texas location shooting and baseball setting, it's a dull, cliched affair with a hook-handed killer. What's shocking is that the director, Peter Masterson, won much acclaim for creating The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas and directing The Trip to Bountiful. What got him involved in this thing is a real mystery. It has good tech credits--Fred Murphy was the DP and Pino Donnagio did the score--but the whole enterprise reeks of a USA Network film from back in the day.
I think that this is the first DVD release for this obscurity. Perhaps this means that there is hope for an official DVD release of Lady Beware someday. Posted by the young warrior (Member # 9554) on :
Lady beware is one I've been wanting to watch for an age crash,that would be great if it did get put out,I really liked scheider as an actor,still wouldn't mind checking this out just out of curiosity more than anything ,I'm sure I've seen it way way back.
Got a feeling I'd probably be slightly disappointed,you've stated it's pretty dull and also one of the reviewers of the upcoming blu ray release mentioned the plot moves at such a sluggish pace at times it completely looses you!
A pity as i love Scheider's other thriller's from the 80s,the sleazy 52 pick up was great as i thought so to was Cohen and tate.
that's another one I've yet to see - still of the night from 82 with Scheider and Meryl streep.

Dude, I'm with you. I like Scheider a lot--especially in the two that you mentioned, 52 Pick-Up and Cohen and Tate--but I have to wonder why he did this one. It's not awful, but it's just so nondescript. I'm puzzled why this thing even exists. Clearly it was made with the video market in mind, but as I said, it has Scheider and pro tech credits.
Still of the Night has all but been forgotten. For good reason: It's like Night Game, completely mediocre and ho-hum, despite the high-powered talent. And it too is mystifying: a thriller written and directed by an in-over-his-head-for-a-thriller, Robert Benton, who did Places in the Heart and Kramer vs. Kramer. It just doesn't work either.

What was the best team of the '80s? It would have to be between the Cardinals or Dodgers. Dodgers won two WS and lost the LCS in '83 and '85. Cardinals won one WS and were runner-up in two.

Great to see all the other Brewer fans on here!!!! I love the Brewers and they've been doing pretty well over the years since this thread was started. No World Series appearances but at least they are making the playoffs or at least competitive a fair amount of the time.
Speaking of 80's and baseball, it's almost time to watch my favorite baseball movie, Field of Dreams. I watch this every year right before the season starts.

Living 20 minutes from Royals stadium in a suburb of Kansas City Missouri was great as a child. We would be the first ones through the door in right field GA sometimes at $1.50 a ticket. Getting past those darn Yankees in 1980 was huge afyer getting knocked out of the playoffs three times by them in previous years. Also George Brett batting around .400 most of the year was very memorable.
