Hey everyone,

I'm the type of person who totally gets wrapped up and involved w/ the movie she's watching. I kno its stupid, but I just love to cry in movies. I would have to say my top 5 fav tear jerker scenes from the 80's are

1.Top Gun-when Maverick brings Goose's wife his things.
2.Breakfast Club-the scene where they're all spilling why their in detention, and Brian tells
how he thought about killing himself w/ the gun in his locker.(soon followed by a funny scene though)
3.Say Anything-right after Diane breaks up w/ him and he's in the phone booth talking to his sister in the rain, crying, then he says "I gave her my heart....and she gave me a pen! Total tear-jerker!
4.Outsiders- At the very end, when ponyboy is reading johnny's letter.
5.Stand By Me- scene when Gordie is crying because he thinks his dad hates him(towards the end).

i'm sure I left out some.. or many. Tell me what I missed! Tootles!

I can't think of 5 right now, but i have a couple.

E.T. -- ever since I first saw this, its always made me sad. I still get bummed everytime I see it.

Gremlins 1 & 2 -- Gizmo is quite possibly one of the cutest things I have ever seen. Everytime Gizmo would get sad or something, I would too. How can anyone harm Gizmo? DANG Gremlins.

Untamed Heart -- I don't think its an 80s movie, but it can jerk a tear or two. Christian Slater is pretty good in this film, along with Marissa Tomei.

And now the all-time saddest film..........drumroll.............. Old Yeller. Stiil gets to me. I've been an animal lover all my life and to see a dog die at the end just bums me out.

Devolution here,
A)Untamed Heart was in 1993, but old yeller was earlier, so just forget it
B)He catches the puck in the movie, and that was when I deemed it the worst movie ever, how on earth do you catch a HOCKEY PUCK FROM A SLAPSHOT???? HIS HAND WOULD BE BROKEN IN 90 PIECES!!!!!!
oh man,
We are DEVO

Yes I know I went a little out of the 80s genre for some of my picks, but hey, what can you do. And yes the catching of the hockey puck was a little far-fetched, but edit that one scene and the movie is really strong.

ZEPPELIN. Hands Down.

Devolution here,
Never said I didn't like Zeppelin, DEVO is an entirely different breed of music. Don't really feel like getting into an argument about music that no one really listens to vs. worldwide music of the masses. But honestly, if you can get your hands on the Freedom of Choice Album (that goes for all of you) it totally rocks. forget about whip it, concentrate on the rest of the songs,
I have all the Zeppelin albums so don't bother with a zeppelin reply.

back to the original argument,
Separate My cousin vinny / pump up the volume
they were awesome.
Together. Untamed gall bladder was like watching corn grow.

We are DEVO

Posted by paulshrimpton (Member # 1022) on :

Hey DEVO, you're right about Pump Up The Volume - awesome movie, must see regularly. However, as bad as Untamed Heart may be, I'm certain it's not as bad as Bio-dome.

My own 'tear-jerker' (which I try to avoid watching for this reason) is 'Somewhere In Time', with Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour. Just scrapes into the eighties, and if you've seen it, you know what I mean.

Posted by mamamiasweetpeaches (Member # 1715) on :

E.T I sob uncontollably Every Time. watching it is too painful an experience. A corny one that makes me cry is Ice Castles. oh shut up.

Posted by Devolution (Member # 1731) on :

Devolution here,
I stand by the only serious movie that made me cry (even if it was happy tears) was Some Kind of Wonderful.

The only other movie I cry during in Rudy (1993)

I cry at the end everytime once he runs out on the field.

yeah I am a disaster.

We are DEVO
but we are a mess

These are a little weird so don't laugh [Wink]

1. Shes Having a Baby has a few parts, like when they're playing that Apron Strings song or at the end while shes in the hospital.

2. Plains Trains and Automobiles, I don't know the whole scene word for word but when John Candy says "I like me, my wife likes me" that part gets to me.

3. Joe Versus the Volcano when Joe stands up and sees the huge moon and starts talking to God

4. Twins at the end when their mother walks in with the teddy bear and their both like "mama!!"

Posted by Ronnie (Member # 465) on :

purple rain: after prince's father has shot himself and he goes into a room and plays "purple rain" on the piano...AND when he is on stage with the band and is playing "purple rain" and the ppl in the audience are waving their hands in the air. the song itself will make me cry [Frown]

revenge: kevin costner finds the girl he had been looking for at the end in a church and is holding her as she dies in his arms..

rocky IV: when rocky is in his car driving, and is having flashbacks of his memories with apollo..

Posted by SHEGOTGAME (Member # 476) on :

I agree with the people who listed ET as a tearjerker. That's probably the biggest one for me, because the tears start flowing early on when ET gets left behind [Frown]

I also agree with Ronnie about the Rocky IV scene. I love that song that's playing during that scene..."No Easy Way Out"
I also think that the scene where Mickey dies in Rocky III brings tears to my eyes too. And I know Rocky V was a 90's movie and not a very good one, but I have to admit that I got a little bit teary eyed at the end of the movie where they show the credits and all the pictures from the previous Rocky's. I also like the song playing, "Measure of a Man". I like this part because it brings back the good memories of the other Rocky films

Posted by Devolution (Member # 1731) on :

Devolution here,
The only acceptable crying scene in ROCKY is when mickey dies, the only time that I cried when he was driving the car was realizing that Adrian says you can't win in every movie

We ar DEVO

Hey everyone,
i honestly I have to confess that I have never seen any of the Rocky movies... via I hate Sylvester Stallone... cept in Oscar. Plus the mr. T caharatcter is laughable. how cud I possibly take him seriously after those collect commercials. What a shame!Tootles!

I don't think this is an 80s movie, but it's the only one I can think of; in Drop Dead Fred the bit where the main character hugs her imaginary friend goodbye before he disappears out of her life forever.

Uh oh, watch out! If Devolution sees that you picked a movie not of the 80s, he'll probably freak out and criticize your choice.

Devolution here,
Mr. Wilson, I had no problem with the time the movie was from, it was the horribleness of the movie that did it.

Drop Dead Fred has Pheobe Cates,
isn't that all you really need?

Mr. Wilson, by the way that was really funny, I appreciate a good dig

Ultimate tear-jerker endings for the 80's has to belong to E.T.

I cired all over the movie, begining, middle and end...

Then to mention some more..Pretty in Pink made me cry a few times, Sixteen Candles also a few tears shed there...

Now DEVO,,sorryfor this..but a movie that I feel deserves mention but by own year did not make it an 80's movie is Pretty Woman...I cried at the end when he came back to get her in the white limo and carried her down the stairs...

My post on Pretty WOman should say one year, not own....sorry

For me, it's The Color Purple...especially at the end when she sees her sister and children again. Lord, I sob buckets every single time!

Cinema Paradiso is tears film, absolutely wonderful flick so long as subtitles don't put you off.

Posted by Devolution (Member # 1731) on :

Devolution here,
Pretty Woman, oh my god, does anyone know the pain of how bad Julia Roberts is in general??? What about Richard Gere??? What good movies have they been in? American Gigolo? Satisfaction? I understand the fairytale aspect of the movie, and I don't disagree with you and your choice. But I do think the movie was horrible, but maybe just because I can't stand either of their movies.

Wizard, I agree with Cinema Paradiso. I think the planets are aligning now, either that or the apocalypse is coming, because we agree.

We are DEVO

Anyone seen Running On Empty? This movie gets me everytime, the part when Danny(phoenix) confesses his love to Martha Plimpton. [Frown]

My Own Private Idaho was pretty depressing too! although, I'm pretty sure this movie was made in 91.... hope I didn't offend NE1 by that! :rolleyes:lol.

Posted by Muffy Tepperman (Member # 1551) on :

Hey Devo:
I can't stand Julia Roberts!!!!!! [Roll Eyes]
She is the same character in every movie she's in
I can't understand what makes her so likable? The only movie I can think of that she was a little different was that Mary Riley Movie. Surprise the movie did horrible. Mystic Pizza is one of my fav movies. But, not because of her. I was so exicted to hear someone say something bad about her [Big Grin]

Did anyone watch Devo on Square Pegs last week?

Posted by RiverPhoenix4life (Member # 1719) on :

i agree that Julia Robert's acting is a little one dimensional. Even so, I would have to say That the seen in Steel Magnolias at the funeral was really heart-breaking. Great perfomance by Sally Field in my opinion. [Smile]

Posted by FontanaG (Member # 1673) on :

I have to agree with the movie Say Anything, but not when he's in the phone booth but after when he is standing in the rain outside her window playing there song on the boom box, I don't about you fellas but that took it home for me, [Frown] I can remember when opps getting personal now. Aye he was head over heals in Love. Man I sound like such a girl. How about those Raiders Dud?
[Big Grin]

Posted by FontanaG (Member # 1673) on :

Ooops, I almost forgot how about the movie "Can't buy me love" She totaly breaks his heart in that movie, also the movie with Corrie Hans "Lucas" Now that was a sad he lied about where he lived just be like eveyone else, yet happy ending movie. [Big Grin]

Posted by 80'sLoveBug (Member # 1607) on :

Now regardless of Julia Robert's & Richard Gere's horrible acting...I stand firmly by my tear-jerking moment in Pretty Woman...

Everyone will not always agree, but hey that's what makes it more fun.

Posted by The Wizard (Member # 533) on :

Devolution, definitely something cosmically weird going on, I also have to agree with your comments on Julia Roberts and Richard Gere -I can't stand them!

Posted by paulshrimpton (Member # 1022) on :

Although (and this one is asking for comment) I kinda liked My Best Friend's Wedding, but only 'cos Rupert Everett was in it.

That's what I love about Devolution... he's just so modest.lol. Richard Gere bugs the hell outta me too!!! Has anyone seen a movie he was in called Frist Knight... circa 1996? This movie almost made me puke! Yuck! It was a complete and utter disaster...difficult not to fall asleep in in the theater. [Frown]

Tearjerkers are great! Here's mine, but some might slide again back to the 70's.

1.) The Other Side of the Mountain-you can't get any more sad then being paralyzed, from the neck down, after being headed to the Olympics as a down hill skier. Then falling in love with a great guy-only to have him die at the end in a plane crash-the end has to be one of the saddest scenes I have ever seen. Plus it is a true story.

2.) Kramer Vs. Kramer- I bawl every time I see it, the end when she gives him back to his Dad, after she wins custody.

3.) Terms of Endearment- when the mother dies, it's heartbreaking

4.) Liar's Moon-with Matt Dillon- this is about the best movie I have ever seen..the end is so sad, but I can't say much about it, but watch it, it is the best, and very suspenseful, and just a great movie!

SORRY BIT OFF SUBJECT BUT...

I just read someone refering to Joe vs The Vocano. How many of you thought to yourselvs "YOU JOE???" when watching Castaway?

Now don’t laugh, but the saddest movie I ever saw was ‘Tarka the Otter’ .
Based on the classic Henry Williamson book and set in the beautiful English countryside, Tarka the Otter is the captivating story following the life of an otter. From Tarka`s birth to his climactic confrontation with Deadlock the otter hound,
Tarka`s life is an unforgettable experience. Set in the 1920`s when otter hunting was still legal in England, Tarka must use his cunning and natural instincts to outwit not only man, but man’s best friend.... I know, it’s actually from 1979, but I saw it for the first time in the early 80’s.
As a kid I cried my eyes out with this one.

Other movies on my tearjerker list are:

- ‘The Snowman’ from Raymond Briggs. 1982 ( short animation )
- ‘E.T.’ 1982

Posted by isis9968 (Member # 1780) on :

Also, Six Weeks, with Dudley Moore and Mary Tyler Moore,it is so sad. Her daughter has cancer and wants to work for Dudley Moore and helps get him elected into government. It is a total bummer.

Posted by Eddie Wilson (Member # 169) on :

"Casualties of War" with Michael J. Fox and Sean Penn. If you don't feel sorry for the girl in this film, then you have no heart. It really brings me down everytime I watch this movie.

Posted by spyke65 (Member # 1746) on :

Just here to defend Julie and Richard. "Notting Hill" is my fave Julie movie, and "Officer and A Gentleman" (which is 80's!) is my fave Richard movie.

And Led Zeppelin is cool! So is Devo (Satisfaction is my fave!) [Big Grin]

In case you didnt know,LIARS MOON has two endings. In one a main charactor lives and in the other they dont. I think most of us have seen the "Dead" one.
Yes,Terms Of Endearment is another weepie.

Posted by isis9968 (Member # 1780) on :

I did not know that, about Liar's Moon, I am so glad that the one lives though, I pretended they did anyway, cause it was just too sad.

Another movie is Sophie's Choice, when she has to choose which child to let the Nazi's take, and you know they are going to kill the one she picks, and they would kill them both if she didn't choose. I can't ever watch it again, and I can't watch anything about the Holocaust, because of it being real, and just unbelievable-that it occured not that long ago.

Another movie-which it might have come out in the 90's, but I am not sure,I think it was late 80's- is Gorillas in the Mist-I can not take it when they killed Digit, and then when they kill her. I am a huge animal rights person, and that whole movie was an excellent movie, but it was a true story, and I have a hard time with reality sometimes.

"Part Of Your World" from "The Little Mermaid"...

Yeah, I'm a guy, but this part gets to me every time. I can relate to feeling out of place and wanting to belong among normal people. Remember, I'm a 80s fanatic 20-year-old suffering from depression and a form of autism, so I can't necessarily fit in with people my age.

Sincerely,

John Kilduff...The Rock Steady Flamethrower

1. Monster squad - Frankenstiens monster is gettin sucked into the vortex and the little girl is trying to stop him from going.

2. Pretty In Pink - When Andy confonts Blane at the lockers about him not gettin back t her calls and about the prom and when Ducky tells Andy to get with Blane at the end.

3. Breakfast Club - When Brian reveals why he is in detention

4. When Harry Met Sally - When they FINALLY get together..

Ferris Bueller - NOOOOO NOT THE CAR!!! LOL

Ok,
this one might seem a bit cheesy, but it just always stuck w/ me. The scene in Can't Buy Me Love when Ronald confronts his best friend about the Halloween prank or whatever it was, And his friend explodes on him n is like "you threw sh!t on my house...you threw sh!t on my house!"
I cried, sad o so, i mean me and the scene. lol. [Frown]

Oh Man! This movie was very sad. I get very bummed when animal-type characters almost die or get sad or get left behind or whatever.

E.T., Howard the Duck, Harry and the Hendersons, Milo & Otis, Old Yeller, etc. All Sad!

Another very sad movie is "Of Mice And Men." Very sad especially when the dog has to be let down. And why, I ask myself, am I admitting to being sad caused from these movies? I don't know. I guess I'm just a sensitive guy. [Big Grin]

Posted by RiverPhoenix4life (Member # 1719) on :

I agree Eddie,
Of mice and Men is totally depressing!!! Especially when Lenny accidentally kills the pup. I am such an animal person, especially when it comes to dogs. I will never watch that movie, too sad! [Frown] [Frown] [Frown]

Devolution here,
Are we serious?

Howard the Duck!?!?!?!?

Remember the time that I cried at the end of Turner and Hooch?

NO! Because it didn't happen,
I respect mostly everything,
but Howard the Duck?

Come on Mr. Wilson.

We are DEVO and we didn't cry during howard the duck

Posted by Eddie Wilson (Member # 169) on :

Now don't get me started on "Turner & Hooch." Why did they have to have Hooch die at the end? Thats not right. But I've always loved "Howard The Duck" ever since I was like four years old. And Lea Thompson isn't too shabby either if you know what I mean.

Posted by isis9968 (Member # 1780) on :

Does a movie count if you watched it in the 80's and cried??
Madame X-the old classic, is a tear jerker

Of course, Old Yeller, if you can't cry over that, then your made of stone.

I did cry at E.T, but I knew he'd be back for a visit sometime.

Mommie Dearest- if she were my mom, I'd cry!

My favorite all time movie-that I have watched in the 80's and every decade is Gone with the Wind, when Bonnie-their baby dies, breaking her neck on the horse, and when Melanie dies= get out the Kleenex!

Posted by RiverPhoenix4life (Member # 1719) on :

I agree Isis,
Mommy Dearest scarred me for life. For me it was the tag line scene of the movie... "no more wire hangers!!!!!!" Then beating her daughter w/ the wire hanger. Chrimity, tears, tears, and more tears. Tootles! [Frown]

Tear jerkers:

The end of Without A Trace......I do the ugly cry every time.

BEACHES for sure.

The Color Purple. Watched this recently with my wife....holy boo hoo....she said it was macho to see me cry...but then again, she was laughing at me...but crying too....hmmmmmmmm [Confused]

Rocky 3....ouch...why'd they do that!!!

Field of Dreams ending, Ray seeing his dead dad as a young man

The Monster Squad "don't go, don't go away", ""byeee" and Phobe throwing the monster the stuffed animal is a nice touch, gets me every time

Turner and Hooch (dog dies saving Tom Hamks)

Rocky 3 (Micky's death)

Back to the Future (when Doc Brown gets shot by the Libyan terrorists)

and honorable mention goes to Night of the Creeps, the scene when Chris plays an audio cassette recording of his best friend JC saying goodbye to him just before he dies and telling him how to kill the creeps, especially at the end of the message when JC says "I love you. Good luck with Cynthia" Apparently, director Fred Dekker placed photos of dead bodies from war atrocities to get Jason Lively to cry for real when filming the scene.

And screw it, I'll also throw in The Outsiders, when Johnny dies in the hospital and the scene where Ponyboy later reads Johnny's letter.
