MGM has recently purchased a script, a REMAKE of the 1986 comedy "Back to School."
Why?
Granted, it's by no means a favorite, but still, really like this movie and consider it an 80's classic. I don't see what merits a remake? It sounds as bad of an idea as "Crocidile Dundee in L.A."
With Hollywood's current lack of originality, it seems inevitable that many of our favorite 80's flicks will someday get the remake treatment. And maybe sooner then we think.
In fact, the "Porkys" remake is apparently already in pre-production right now with Howard Stern's new production company. (who also plans to disgrace the great "Rock and Roll High School" with a needless imitation as well)
This one really kills me...the "Airplane!" remake is already the works.
Anyway, I'm sure most, if not everyone on these boards will agree with me that this is a bad (and sad) idea. That shouldn't lead to much of a debate. But how about predictions? If classics like "Airplane!" aren't safe, what 80's movie do you think will get the remake treatment?
I say, sadly, "The Breakfast Club", with a "modern" Mtv cast for the kids to relate to.
"Repo Man", a cult classic, and right now alot of cult classics have been targeted for remakes (for instance, Willard, which came out, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, which is finished, and is coming soon, and Dawn of the Dead which is in production now)

I also agree. Some of the films that you have mentioned may not be classics, but they have acquired a strong cult following over the years. Remaking them would just ruin the love people have for the originals because those who have never seen them will constantly compare them to the first. I think it's a bad idea.

Remaking classic films is a major mistake. It's kinda like trying to rekindle a relationship with your old high school girlfriend 20 years later. Every once in a Blue Moon it works out, but most of the time it ends in disappointment.

80s flicks hold up so well that remaking them is pointless and a box office bomb guarentee. Seeing current actors do a classic is sometimes fun, but the 80s just isn't old enough yet. Though the idea of seeing Airplane done almost 25 years later is ok.

Hollywood just doesn't seem to realise that there's no need for such remakes. Lack of inspiration is also the reason why they come up with scripts like: Freddy vs Jason, Alien vs Predator and so on. Where does it stop??? before you know it we have films like: Rain Man vs Forrest Gump, Snorks vs Smurfs,...

You are all so right. Eighties movies are classic, and should be left alone. Some remakes are utterly ridiculous sounding, like an "Airplane" remake! How do you remake a comedy like that?
But recently I have been inflicted with horrible news. I heard that J.Lo (more like J.Ho if you ask me) is thinking about playing Alex in a remake of "Flashdance"! Please don't! It's my favorite eighties movie!

It's so hard to believe a place with so many "creative" people can't come up with new ideas. This remaking movies stuff has got to quit! I agree with McFly, don't remake BTTF and stay away from Goonies!
I would imagine someone might think Teen Wolf would be a great remake. They could do better effects for the "wolf".
I've heard they're re-doing Charlie and The Chocolate Factory too. I know that's not an 80s movie, but I'm upset. Don't mess with the classics and leave the 80s movies alone! Grrr.

We all know they are not the sharpest knives in the drawer out there in hollywood. They will remake anything that they think we will spend money on just out of nostalgia. We don't have to spend our hard earned money on that crap. We were there the first time.

I believe one of Jennifer Lopez's music videos (forgot the song title) was a tribute to "Flashance", particularly the audition scene.

A sequel to The Goonies is crazy...you just can't do that...and to even think about a remake of BTTF is insane....nothing will even come close...it's all the memories involved with those movies that made them classics....They want to try to make them better but it won't end up that way...it will be just the opposite...

NO NO NO! You will never believe it, but there is going to be a Ferris Bueller's Day Off Sequel. It will star Matthew Broderick again. The plot will be him at work, instead of at school, trying to ditch work! How in the hell is he going to ditch work? Does this sound retarded or what? First of all, his boss can FIRE HIM! Yeah I heard they were in talks for a sequel to Goonies. I just don't know if I can get excited about that or not. It would be neat to see the "gang" back together but that's what the DVD extras were for. I'm afraid if they start messing with it, they'll really mess it up.
<sigh> What can you do, except refuse to spend your hard earned money on their movies that they hope will be "easy money".

Yeah, a Repo Man remake would be a very bad idea, but I can see it happening some day. The signs on the wall:
Gone in 60 Seconds was a remake of an old 70's film, did very well at the box office, and was about stealing cars.
"Speeding car movies" are huge ticket draws these days, like the awful Fast and Furious franchise.
The Grand Theft Auto video games are some of the most popular games out today.
Monster garage, MTV True Life episodes about street racing, cable "up close and behind the scenes" documentaries about Repo Men, etc.
So yeah, as much as I'd hate to see it happen, it wouldn't surprise me if some studeo exec in Hollywood, incapable of coming up with an original idea, ends up devising such an idea.

Sequals are one thing, remakes are another.
I like sequals for the chance to see characters we loved reuinted for another adventure. Even though most suck, it's better than taking the original, and tarnishing it's great scenes with a lame-o attempt at being fresh.
Checked all over and can't confirm the Bueller follow up, but even if they are, I wouldn't mind. I check the John Hughes Files website often, seeing constant rumors of a Breakfast Club 2, Ferris 2, Pretty in Pink 2, etc. Hughes would have yet another goldmine on his hands considering all the sequals to his hits he could do. Unfort. the only ones he's done are Home Alone 2 and Vacation 3.

I would hate it if they remade Ferris, but I would actually enjoy a nice "The Breakfast Club" remake. If it comes out by 2005, it will be just in time for its 20th anniversary. It would be satysfying to see the gang back together. I would enjoy it even more to see what they do. Andrew would probably be a coach, Brian would be a weird science teacher (haha! get it, weird science!), Claire would probably be a fashion designer, Allison would probably be a counselor, and even better, Bender should be the PRINCIPAL of the same school that he terrorized twenty years ago! Just a thought....
PS/ It is true that you can add sequels to the John Hughes movies... but not all of them! Think about it: How in the world can you remake Ferris Bueller's Day Off of Sixteen Candles?? There litterally is no way! Pretty in Pink COULD work and so can The Breakfast Club, Some Kind of Wonderful, and MAYBEW Weird Science! LOL

Dang it, reading this post REALLY ****ed me off! Why is Hollywood (the place of creativity) falling short of its supply? Why MUST they now try to ruin something so precious as my 80's memories. I agree with all you guys on this one. I don't know about sequels yet (as some might be a little weird) but I definitely DO NOT agree with remakes. I hear that Goonies 2 is on the table although there might not be any Fratelli brothers appearance since Mama Fratelli has passed on. But back to my point they have already started ruining my comic book heroes (ie Spiderman, X-men) now they are going for my teenage icons as well? I swear I will start blowing up the industry if they touch Better of Dead, Weird Science, 1 Crazy Summer, or War Games!!! Oh yeah as well as Reform School Girls! DJ, This was actually the first movie I saw that I considered somewhat of a porn! Yes how naive and stupid we are at 11! But it was and still is one of my #1 favorites (hence my name). Charlie was the one character that I really enjoyed in the movie. I wanted to be just like her when I grew up (a total dominating bi$ch!) Hahahaha. I hated Jenny but sorta felt sorry for Lisa and don't get me started on "Ednaaaaaaaaaaaa" At times I wanted to be there too (obviously for different reasons than yours) but maybe it's best that I am not! I have distinct memories of "Reform School Girls" being a movie I watched at around 4am on Christmas morning, while waiting for my parents to wake up.
Oh yeah, I hated Edna. The woman who played her was in alot of fun B-movies at that time, and I think her character was actually named Edna in most of them.

The actress was Pat Ast, who died two years ago. She got her show-biz start by hanging out with Andy Warhol and his crowd. According to the IMDB, Pat was a high-school classmate of Barbra Streisand!

the worst movie I saw this year was a tv movie re-make of Carrie. I pretty much knew they should leave the classics alone,and boy was it terrible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I cant stand it when they do this. what ever happened to the good old days when they made movies based on good books?!!! And whats wrong with re-releasing the Classic 80s movies. I'm having a hard enough time with people remaking 80's songs constantly, did you hear Boys of Summer by the Ataris? But I guess John Hughes is really influential on current film directors. I kind of agree with not making a Ferris Bueller sequel, but if it was done, always thought Ferris would be in college driving the Dean insane with Cameron, neither of them attending class, but scamming their way to straight A's, hooking up with the Duck man (Jon Cryer), college hijinks galore, could have happened but might have gone into a Revenge of the Nerds direction.
Still wished that they made that sequel to Making the Grade called Tourista.
