Hi guys...just a quick question. I hooked up a wireless router to my computer for my tenant downstaris...trying to help a single Mom save a few dollars. I was wondering...when hooking up a router, does that impact my computer's performance at all...speed, for example. And does my information remain secure? Thanks for any help.

I'm pretty sure you can keep your information secure by not allowing sharing on your network.
A few things you should be aware of:
1. Whils not making a huge difference, when she is online downstairs it may affect your connection speeds upstairs but not by much.
2. You will be legally responsible for anything she downloads. If she downloads music illegally, for example, you could take the hit.
I'm sure there are a few other concerns I would have but its early and I cant think straighjt.

Noms is correct. Make sure that your drives and folders are not shared, otherwise she will have access to them. And be very very careful that she doesn't give out the security key to your network.
Keep an eye on your downloads, so that you don't approach your limit too quickly (do you guys in the U.S have download limits like we do here?) Do you get charged extra for going over your limit or are you shaped?
It's a really nice thing you're doing, I just hope it doesn't bite you in the ****.

Thanks guys....I guess for that matter, is it even legal in the first place? And, how do I ensure that my drives and folders are not shared? I don't have huge concerns regarding content or her sharing the the security key...but something to be mindful of. * You're right Stitch...great to be nice, but maybe should have inquired before offering...

I did this two weeks ago... you need a long password, WPA network encryption, and you can make you network 'invisible' once it's set up (it can be found with the network name).
There not much else you can do.

If you want to be sure that your drives are not shared, right click your drive (I'm assuming you use Windows), and select the Sharing option. Make sure that the check box for sharing is not ticked. To make double sure, do the same thing for your My Documents folder.
