Obviously lots of collectors on this site...I'm always wondering.....why.....what compells people to collect, collect, collect. Typically gets to a point where things are stored in boxes, people run out of room, thier house gets cluttered, some buy things they can't afford...what comes over us? I recently had a bit of "freak attack" over all of my belongings...life was feeling cluttered and things were getting overwhelming, so, for the first time in my life, I was able to get rid of lots of stuff and am feeling a bit better. On the other hand, still have tons of stuff that I don't use, but mentally can't part with. I'm interested to hear how others talk of their collecting habbits...

For me its definetely of a matter of not wanting to get rid of things for centimental value than it is buying and collecting things. I know what your going through, for example, I have a 5 year old daughter who has attained about 3 million toys since she was born. Not 1 of them toys has left our house since she has gotten older. We had a spare toy room overfilled with just her toys it was that bad. Now last year I bought a nice size storage shed to keep my riding mower and quad and a couple other larger items in. In the end, all I can fit in there is my quad and some tools. The rest is you guessed it, boxes of toys and various other collections that will probably be in there til im old and grey. I hear ya johnny. I'm well versed in the obvious reasons ...wanting to re-capture your child hood, placing sentimental value on things of loved ones that have passed away, etc. I just don't understand...why some of us and not others? Even simple things like, I have approximately 800 DVDs...some I've seen once and will never watch again, but I still need to keep it for my collection! I have boxes of old comics, toys, hockey cards that I likely won't ever use, but can't part with them...as long as my little brain knows they're there. * One last thing...I feel a bit better about my clutter when I watch the show "Hoarders" which chronicles the lives of people struggling with obbsessive hoarding. Still...can't help but think my life will still be great with less material things...

Things like music, I collect just because I love it more than anything and will listen to the thousands upon thousands of songs over and over. Movies are similar, but I am like you Kev, some I will never watch again. The 80's ones I will keep no matter what for the collection. I do sell off alot of the newer movies though if I know I will never watch them again. Alot of vintage stuff that I buy is strictly for nostalgia reasons....brings back great memories. I am bitten by the nostalgia bug quite often and sometimes I will spend hours on ebay just looking at all the toys, games, clothes, etc. from my past. I also go through phases where I buy everything just to have and look at for a while, then I will go ahead and sell it off again, often with taking a loss on it....the joys of being a collector. My movie and music collections are functional. I bought them to watch and listen to. I don't collect just to collect.

It's always been movies and music.. so basically i made my dream come true building a massive collection. I've got more movies and music than i could ever watch or listen to for the rest of my life, and yet i keep buying more and more and more.. Maybe i've grown accustomed to the lifestyle of being a collector. But even though i fully realise i will never find the time to actually watch all the movies i own, it still makes me happy having them around. What i've created is the possibility to watch nearly any movie i've ever dreamt of, right here in my own home. I mean, that's gotta be worth something.. right ?
Still, i can't help feeling there's just not enough time to fully enjoy my collections.

I hear you Johnny. I`m so busy with young kids that I rarely have time to enjoy my collections...but still feel I`ll be enjoying this stuff in my later years. Even in another couple of years, my youngest will be in school...I envision taking a day off work just to enjoy a movie marathon with no distractions.
I still love going to yard sales and flea markets but I don`t really actively try to add to my existing collections. For example, I have tons of old comics, MAD Magazines, hockey cards, etc...I still don`t want to part with them, but also have no desire to buy more. I only collect 80`s DVDs, though with 500-600 of them, very unlikely to find ones I don`t have unless I buy online. My general rule now is...since I have my own little 70`s-80`s room, I can fill that til my hearts` content...as long as things don`t start to overflow into other rooms...that`s harmless enough for me....
