My guess about the avatars is that they take up far too much bandwith and with Nick running this site as a self funded exercise it's not considered worth the extra cost / hassle. I personally would rather see the site continue without avatars than fold after a few months because Nick cannot manage the financial implications of allowing them. Same goes for signature blocks too.
Noms of reason
PS Welcome to the boards. Don't feed the Devo!!!!

Also worth mentioning that this is a family friendly site, so not too much of the old ****'s!

hmmmm...a good point. still tho i find that avatars personalise a persons post. it makes it a shead load easier too to just have a nosey at what people would like as there avatar. i was going to have clark griswald but i have had to do with nothing.
can nothing be done??
Posted by JAY LEE (Member # 6345) on :
i don't buy the bandwith thing! Sure, im no expert on these technical matters. But we can upload our own pic on our profile, and put as many pics as we want in our post! And you're telling that if we had a small pic above our name, that would blow the budget???

Why don't those wanting avitars pay the difference if they're wanted so badly? Great site ran by great people that would be ashamed to be ruined budget wise by something as insignificant as avitars.

yea i dont think that avatars are going to eat up much bandwith. this is a good forum but it does look very bland. it sound daft but avatars really do break up posts so they are easier to read. yuo can identify individuals posts quickly of youre skimming over the thread + i think that having no signitures is a bit rough. not even one?! i was looking forward to joinging in on some coluorful 80's banter but all i have really seen so far is loads of black writing on a pink background.
and why do the mod's get a avatar that says 'i help maintain'? thats cool, i like to know who is a mod but why7 do you get at least some sort of avatar while the rest of us get nowt?? haway man, divven' be like that pet.

And come to imagine...all us poor souls with no self esteem, who've been on here for YEARS...never to have felt worthy of an avitar...

Not only the mods have "I help maintain". You can have one too if you contribute to the site by doing updates on the review page. You can also have "Site Sponser" if you donate a little money to the site. Everyone wants Nick to be able to afford Avitars, but hardly anyone gives him a dime. Some Rewinders have been here for years and never donated a penny or did one site update....why? If we all give a little, maybe Avitars will come one day.

I totally agree! I could care less if we have avatars. I belong to other message boards where you can have avatars and I don't think the make posts easier to read or whatever. I like the Rewind just the way it is. To each his own I guess....

For what it's worth, Signatures are active - just update your profile and they appear.
But think about it - this site has some major hits on it - and Nick currently pays for every single byte that gets sent out from the host servers. An avatar is what - around 30Kb? And so if you add 30Kb to every post on every thread every time it's viewed, that quickly adds up.
Short answer is - you can ask, but until such time as this site becomes self-supporting, it ain't gonna happen. As has been said, better a message board without avatars than no site at all.
