quote:I am furiously trying to learn the lyrics to 'when will I be famous' by bros.
It's a dead simple song. Without any cheating at all, my memory says:
When will I will I be famous?
Yes your suitably at one with your body and the sun (yes you are) You've read Karl Marx and you've taught yourself to dance (You're the best by far) But you keep asking the question The one you're not supposed to mention
When will I will I be famous? (I can't answer I can't answer that) When will I see my picture in the papers? (I can't answer I can't answer that) And I can't tell you when You'll see your name up in lights
You're a slave to fashion and your life is full of passion (It's the way you are) You suffered for your art with the jogging in the park (You know you should go far) But you keep asking the question The one your not supposed to mention
When will I will I be famous? (I can't answer I can't answer that) When will I see my picture in the papers? (I can't answer I can't answer that) And I can't tell you when You'll see your name up in lights
You won't suffer in silence You're a talent you know that I noticed You'd like to be a legend A big star overnight (Tell me when) I can't answer your question It's driving me insane And your impossible impatience Tearing at my brain
When will I will I be famous?
When will I will I be famous? (I can't answer I can't answer that) When will I see my picture in the papers? (I can't answer I can't answer that) And I can't tell you when You'll see your name up in lights
Etc.
I did all of that from memory. I'm so ashamed. Somebody shoot me!
Hang on, you were around in the eighties, surely if at any time someone says to you "When will I... will I" the entire song autoplays in your brain? It's like a DISEASE! I've never forgotten it.
Pop trivia: The line "When Will I be Famous?" isn't sung by Bros. It's sung by a female vocalist.

I have been asked to write something for the programme..... this is what I came up with....
My memories of the 80’s
Turquoise, Pink, yellow, peach, day glo towelling socks (odd of course), Bermuda shorts, pixie boots, Fergie bows. Pretending to be Stephanie from Degrassi Junior High, by taking my spotty leggings and matching tie up t-shirt to school, to change in to in the loos. Wanting to be the ‘Famous 5’ and creating rubbish adventures with the twins down the road (we sometimes pretended to be triplets). Watching ‘The box of delights’ on a cold winters evening. Making up dance routines to Kylie and Jason. Getting not one but TWO care bears for Christmas. The whole playground bouncing on LoLo balls. Wanting to look like Rosanna Arquette, in the poster for desperately seeking Susan and going in to ‘Woollies’ to look at the record cover for in to the groove, which sported the same picture. Getting ‘proper’ summers. Seeing the punks around town and making Mohawks using shampoo in the bath. Eating golden syrup sandwiches on the front lawn before going roller booting. Telling everyone that you would ‘be their best friend’ if they did what you wanted. Skipping, playing elastic (laggy). Trying to be Mel and Kim. Learning to play the recorder. Thinking Allo Allo and Duty Free were hilarious. Becoming an Auntie at 8 years old. Thinking that Magnum P.I and Kevin Webster were handsome and wanting to marry a man with a moustache when I grew up (I don’t now). Thinking that a £1 coin cello taped in your birthday card was loads of money. Loadsa money (wap your wad on the counter). Believing in Father Christmas and the tooth fairy. Thinking that if you ate ‘ready brek’ you would ACTUALLY get an orange glow. Wanting to be American or from London (so you could be in Grange Hill). Seeing Care Bears the movie at a cinema where there was an interval. Loving 5 star and Sonia. Trying to stay up as late as possible. Going to the discos at the Methodist Church hall (50p entry), Brownies, disco dancing, wanting to join Girls Brigade, and thinking that my big sister was the coolest.
These are just a few recollections I have from the 80’s. A decade, which holds so many amazing memories for me. A decade, which fills me with a glorious sense of nostalgia and childhood magic. I spent most of the 80’s playing outside when it was still safe for kids to do so, as long as you were home before it got dark. This was a time, where I didn’t have to worry about anything except whether my best friend was ‘going off with someone else’. It was a great time. I hope we have done a good job of recreating some of its wonder.

Earth Angel, I'm going to have to slice up your lovely post...
quote:Turquoise, Pink, yellow, peach, day glo towelling socks (odd of course)
Day-glo towelling socks and day-glo fingerless gloves! Ah, the memories!
quote:Wanting to be the ‘Famous 5’ and creating rubbish adventures with the twins down the road (we sometimes pretended to be triplets).
The Famous Five, or as I like to call them 'The Goonies':
quote:Watching ‘The box of delights’ on a cold winters evening.
Yessssss! The effects look really really bad now, but at the time it was the best thing ever! Sooooo Christmassy!
quote:Getting ‘proper’ summers.
That's our memories deceiving us!
quote:Telling everyone that you would ‘be their best friend’ if they did what you wanted.
I'll be your best friend forever if you let me wear your pink and yellow fingerless gloves this lunchtime!
quote:Learning to play the recorder.
In my case; not trying hard and giving up within days.
quote:Thinking Allo Allo and Duty Free were hilarious.
'Allo Allo' was hilarious... for about two episodes, until the repetition wore thin. 'Duty Free' was never hilarious. Just strangely depressing.
quote:Becoming an Auntie at 8 years old.
Uncle at 13 for me.
quote:Thinking that Magnum P.I and Kevin Webster were handsome and wanting to marry a man with a moustache when I grew up (I don’t now).
Come on, if Tom Selleck in his prime made you an offer, you wouldn't try and love the 'tache?!
quote:Thinking that a £1 coin cello taped in your birthday card was loads of money.
£1 notes! You could have £3 and feel like you were rich!
quote:Believing in Father Christmas and the tooth fairy.
Never ever.
quote:Thinking that if you ate ‘ready brek’ you would ACTUALLY get an orange glow.
You don't?!
quote:Loving 5 star and Sonia.
I used to argue with my friend that 'Madonna' was better than 'Five Star'! As for PWL... I find it hard to openly embrace my memories of their stuff, because I would later come to regard them as the death of pop music in the UK with their 'Hit Factory' mentality, which resulted in an overkill that created the space for all the awful faceless dance music that took over in the early 90's. Rant rant moan moan.
quote:Trying to stay up as late as possible.
Succeeding! For the last two years of school I was never in bed before two! As a result, I was always half asleep at school and did badly in exams! The reason? ITV's new late-night lineup (featuring a presenter)... 'Late Night Late'! It had the best shows on TV!

If it's half as good as this post you'll be onto a winner! I *demand* that you post this in the 'Memories of Growing Up' thread! Ok, I don't, I *request* that you post it there. But I do it while wearing a big 'tache - get the picture?
quote:There WILL be crying. You are allowed to laugh.
This can go on forever...
There WILL be laughing. You are allowed to join in.

Haha...Tom Selleck NOW would still get a look in. Thanks Logan, I'm glad you liked it. I reckon yours would be the boy version of this....wanting castle grey skull for christmas, wanting to be the fall guy, playing top trumps on school trips, swapping stickers in the playground (got got got NEED). I bloody love the 80's.
Posted by Muffy Tepperman (Member # 1551) on :
Angel I love your post!!!
It's fun for me to read because even though your my English twin sister haha you had things a bit different over there..different popular music and candy lol...People tell me all the time i'm so nostaligic because it was my childhood.......but I really believe it's those things about the 80's that make it different.

You NAILED it! GOLD! I really really wanted Greyskull! (Never got it!) I loved Horror trumps! I even collected football stickers as a kid, and I hated football! I may be being dense about this... but did the girls collect stickers? I can't remember them doing it, but that may be because they were swapping stickers I wasn't collecting.
Five more things that made the 80's the greatest...
'Choose Your Own Adventure' books. 'The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole' (Profoundly in love with Pandora!) 'Superted'! 'Bananaman'! 'T-Bag'! Scroll to the end of this clip for the theme tune and a nostalgia overdose: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nOhSlrGKKUw
I've used so many exclamation marks today I think I need to go and lie down.

Logan I loved that T-Bag show. I think I watched all of them. The first t-bag now pulls pints in the Woolpack in Emmerdale.
I used to WATCH the secret diary of Adrian Mole...I knew the theme (wasn't it Ian Drury that sang it???)...and Banana Man ruled!!! What about Alfonso bonzo?..and Nightmare???....in hindsight the effects for THAT were pretty rubbish. Oh and we didn't really do stickers THAT much. There were care bear ones...and of course EVERYONE loved the garbage pale kids.

It was indeed Ian Dury that sang the theme to Adrian Mole. It just missed being a hit. 'Nightmare'? Are you referring to... 'Knightmare'?! Yeah, the effects for that always looked ropey. In some ways it was a precursor to the more interactive 'Crystal Maze'. I do remember 'Alfonso Bonzo'... and others like 'Gruey', 'Marmalade Atkins', 'Palace Hill', 'Bad Boyes' (a forgotten gem!). Ah... the memories of it all! I think because there were so few channels, and most kids got home from school at the same time, we all ended up watching the same things. One big nostalgic shared experience!
I remember thinking when the 'Garbage Pail Kids' movie came out that was the end of the line (same with 'He-Man', although I still like that movie! Young Courtney Cox, anyone?) Apparently they revived Garbage Pail Kids a couple of years ago, but it can never be the same. When we had them it was all new! Same with computer games... and music videos... and home video. Why is it that whenever I get nostalgic, I hear the theme to 'Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads'?:
Well...I did the show and it was GREAT. I had the best time doing it and it was filmed so as soon as there are any pics and when I get the DVD you will get to see x

That sounds great Earth Angel, I'm looking forward to seeing the pictures/video. I'm sure you did brilliantly.
A few of my memories....
Typing in pages & pages(or what seemed to be) of code from Sinclair User or Your Sinclair magazines, that inevitably didn't work.
Sitting around my Spectrum or Commodore 64 with a group of like-minded friends trying to write the "next great text adventure", which at that time were incredibly popular. Can you imagine trying to convince a kid nowadays, that a game that had very little graphics(or none at all) could be fun.
Attending PGL in the 3rd & 4th year of Junior School. Anybody else here go to PGL?
-- I was never mad about sports as a kid(except Football), but I still have great memories of both years. A whole week away from home felt like freedom. The look on my mums face when she opened my bag, only to see clothes caked in mud*, is something that I'll never forget. I didn't enjoy the abseiling, but you couldn't get me off the Quad Bikes.
* I'm not too sure what she was expecting, seeing as it was a week away at an adventure camp.
I'll add more later..

Dedication? No... that's insanity! Drug his tea, call the white coats and have him sectioned.
Unless... it was a really really great show! In which case you buy him half a coke (with a slice of lemon) and thank him for his patronage.
Nah... have him sectioned anyway!
