I've been hearing about deep fried foods for quite some time now. I think it's some Scottish phenomenon. Some of our UK based posters please shed some light on this. I've heard of deep fried pizza, but mostly Mars bars, an idea which still makes my head spin.

Yep chip shops in Scotland are serving deep fried mars bars, snickers bars, pizza, pickled eggs, icecream along with the fish & chips.

What's the deal with deep fried pizza and even deep fried sushi? Anyone try it?

What's wrong with deep fried Mars bars? I'm a healthy weight now, after years of hard work, but I still treat myself to one every now and then. Ever tried a Dagwood dog? That's a battered, deep-fried hot dog. Never had one myself but my Mum said they were big in her day.

is the dagwood dog the same as a corn dog? i have tried them don't like them though? dee

Hi Mel, big welcome to another Aussie here on the Rewind.

Personally I can't stand Dagwood Dogs but they are always popular around showtime.

I must say, I'm not crazy about the way dagwood dogs smell, that's been enough to put me off thus far. By the way, Stitch Groover's a cool nickname. Mine seems pretty unoriginal now! lol.

The best deep fried thing I've ever had in my life is fried bread dough. They used to have it at all the fairs when I lived in upstate New York. It's sort of like funnel cake, I guess. Basically it's a deep fried piece flatbread brushed with melted butter and covered with powdered sugar, cinnamon, chocolate syrup or whatever else you fancy. They're known as "Gillespies" to locals. Totally delectable.

We have something very simialr as described, they called them beaver tails, as it has the same shaped, usually served with some maple topping.

On the same theme as the fried bread dough, at all the fairs and other events around here they make a thing called Indian Tacos

http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/the-best-of/indian-taco-recipe/index.html

When I lived in NW Minnesota they had the same exact thing except they called them Uff Da tacos because of the heavy Norwigian population in the area.

Deep Fried Food is why we have a HUGE problem with obesity in our country.

I don't eat much fried food- except French Fries-but they have to be fresh cut fries.

I like deep fried cauliflower too.

I have a really good and easy recipe to make funnel cakes- just like they do at the carnivals.

I did buy some Green Beans that are battered, and you fry them-I got some at Sam's Club- they are from TGiFs, they are ok, but I really don't like all the grease.

It's in Oswego County, near Oswego and about 25 miles northwest of Syracuse. It's one of those old early industrial towns that was once a lively, thriving community, but has since gone to crap. When I lived there they had Miller Beer, Nestle, and Bird's Eye factories, but they've all since closed down. Now I think the biggest attraction is a Wal-Mart. It's also one of the worst places in the country for annual snowfall outside of Alaska. They get all that lake effect snow from Lake Ontario and terrible blizzards in the winter. I haven't ever missed that.
