80sFan9999 gave me the idea for this thread. Just some things we see and deal with everyday:
Why do drive-up ATMs have Braille on them? I'm sure the blind don't drive....just an observation.
Ever buy something in a store that costs say, $9.98? You give the cashier $10.00, and they say, "Do you want the 2 pennies?" I always say, "Keep it....it is your tip."
Ever buy something in a store and the total comes to, say $25.38. You give the cashier $30 and they ring it up. You then give them 3 pennies....uh oh...."how much change do I have to give them back?" You just ruined their day....out comes the calculator.
Ever buy a few things in a small store....say 4 or 5 things and the cashier will ask you, "Do you need a bag?" I always say, "No....I'll carry this last item with my teeth."
Ever go to a store(Wal-mart is perfect for this)and you need to use the restroom, but you know that this particular place has toilets that automatically flush. You are now stuck with a dilemma....do I wait in agony until I get home, or try to sit like a statue so I don't get an a$$-ful of water(disgusting, filthy water....)
Why do some drivers STOP while entering the highway when the sign clearly says YIELD or MERGE? Are they looking to start an accident?
For us golfers....Ever have a golfball whiz past your head nearly killing you, so close, that you can feel the breeze? The next thing you hear is "fore!" Thanks pal....a little late for that.
Another one for us golfers....Ever see a guy(or gal)hit a drive off the tee with their driver that goes about 220 yards. Then, they are waiting for the green to clear which is about 250 yards away. If you only hit your driver 220....you ain't reaching the green with your 3-wood, Einstein. You're backing up the course!

I like talking about every day stuff that drives us all crazy.
I can't stand that thing about "do you need a bag"...that just happened to me the other day....
we already bag all of our grocery at the store, when we have a full cart...I don't think it's asking for much for them to stick 5 things in a bag.
Someone did that to me not long ago about giving me back change...it was at the Autumnfest thing...and I bought a couple things at a snack bar, and I gave the guy a ten, it might have totalled $8.53. He handed me 1 dollar back, no change. Then he walked off. I thought...well big deal it was like not even 50 cents...I could care less over the money. I just thought...gee...what's with not giving me the right change, and then he didn't even say "thank-you" have a nice night...nothing...he just flung me a dollar, and walked away. I thought...what do I do, do I say...hey buddy where's the rest of my money...and have all the people standing behind me thing I am a crab...I just walked away dumb founded.
Another thing that drove me crazy...is I was in the Dollar Store...and I took my stuff up to the check out...the girl is on the telephone talking to someone about their personal life, and never said...hi...how are you...nothing...she starts checking out my stuff...and I needed something...that I could not find, and I thought...do I interrupt her phone call to ask...I honestly was thinking...that's rude to interupt someone when they are on the phone....but she was at work....but I did ask her, and she gave me a dirty look like I was irritating her.

The thing with Wal-Mart- I saw a commercial the other day, and in the commercial all the cashiers were all nice looking...and clean, and they had a navy blue shirt on that said Wal-Mart, and tan pants. I thought...where the heck is that Wal-Mart...because our Wal-Mart...the women have no teeth, no bra, spaghetti sauce on their disgusting t-shirt, hair that looks like it hasn't been washed in a month, and they are wearing sweat pants.
I would rather die than use Wal-Marts bathroom.

Around here, you have to stop where there is a "yield" to get on the Parkway during rush hour, or just about any other time, because the cars in the right lane won't move over. You have to stop, then inch your way in. The cashiers at one Walmart are okay here, but at another one that is kinda ghetto-ish, the cashiers are all on that welfare-to-work program. They are lucky if they have 2-3 cashiers at that store. They don't like to work Fri., Sat., Sun. so they usually don't even bother to show up. My friend is a social worker and knows all about these scumbags. They are sooooooooo slow moving too- they could have 40 people in line and they are too busy talking with Shamiqua, the cashier in the next stall, that they can only ring one item per minute! It's disgusting, our tax dollars are paying for these people. We don't go there too often,because either one of those Walmarts is actually a good drive for us. I just go to Target or Kmart if I need something that I can't get at the grocery store or dollar store.

My all time favorite though was when I was still working at the restraunt. This lady and her husband came in and ordered the jalepeno cheese dip as an apetizer. One of my waitresses came running into the kitchen to get me screaming that someone was dying in the dining room. Naturally I ran out there to see what I could do. The poor lady was in anafalactic shock. She carried an eppy pen on her and I helped administer it. (I cary on for bee stings) Her husband was going a little crazy, ubderstandable. After the paramedics got there and took her, I was talking to the husband. He was irate with me that I had the nerve to serve her a cheese dip that had peppers in it. How dare I! She is allergic to peppers. I should tell my servers to tell anyone who orders our Jalepeno Cheese Dip, that it contains peppers!

When I first saw this thread I immediately jumped the gun and thought it would be Oreo double stuff or something. But I guess it's the chocholate chip, preferebaly chewy with chunks that I would say is my kind of cookie. There is also a company called David who makes these zebra cookies, a graham waffer with vanilla on top with chocolate stripes. Absolutely love them.

I got a kick with the cashier at Arby's once. I ordered my food than said and I want a small drink. He said all we have is medium and large. I thought to myself if you only have two sizes how the hell can you have a medium. I than asked him if one of those was smaller than the other one. He said yes. OK I'll have that one.

No disrespect towards those who have already passed on but if someone's 110 years old and they die (happened in my town a few years back) do they really need to say in the obituary they were the "daughter of the LATE such and such?" How bout some of the fast food drive thrus who ask like a million questions? Would you like to try our new _______? How bout giving me time to tell you what I want or should I take your order? And then they butt in halfway thru the order asking what you want on it. If you'd stop interrupting me, maybe I'd be able to tell you lol. It's worse than dealing with a car salesman or telemarketer. Wendy's seems to be the worst for it here although I know all of them do it. They should just eliminate the order takers and let you select what you want from a touch screen including toppings and drink choice. Do they do that anywhere now?

I'm in a pop state but I usually say soda when ordering just to be different.
I guess in Texas they call it coke so when you order in a restaurant you say I'll have a coke then they'll ask what kind? so then you say 7-Up, Pepsi or whatever.

Here's a map of Coke vs Soda vs Pop states. I find it interesting that most of the states that refer to all soft drinks as Coke are the same states that voted for McCain. Where the majority of the Soda & Pop states voted for Obama. Unfortunately my state was one of them that bucks that trend.

When I was younger and visited Minnesota quite often, I always got a kick out of the term Pop they used for soda. I'm sure it's weird for them to hear soda.

I don't know if I should put this on here...or where...but I have been through alot since 10pm last night. This is a random thought- I guess....
My mom was in the emergency room last night...she has been really sick for weeks, and we all thought it was what everyone has had...except she had severe migraines and severe diarrhea and nausea....well her blood pressure last night was 220/99...they thought she might have a stroke (which she suffered a small one some years ago)...or have a heart attack. Those head aches happened to my Aunt and then she had a brain aneurysm and died. So, I was scared last night that my mom would die...and all day today...she and I were scared.
I went to the doctor with her, and we found out she has E-coli. And it isn't good. They have to report it ...they keep track of these kind of things to see where they come from. Well, we know where it came from. She ate a steak at a local restaurant ...and had it done-medium well...she said she thought it tasted funny...and didn't eat it all....and brought it home and fed it to our dog.
He ended up sick too...but not bad...he threw up and then he couldn't quit eating grass...so we knew his stomach was upset...but every once and awhile that happens, so we didn't put it all together.
I found out that place has had some bad things said about it. I have to report it tomorrow, so they can go test their meat.
But...it's weird that in another topic we were saying about food handling.
She's not any better yet...we bought a blood pressure cuff and it is still high-not as bad...but she got medicine for her headaches and blood pressure and nausea...they can't treat E-coli with antibiotics. They said she's lucky she isn't dead, because she lost 14lbs....and that was from fluid ....and they said she was dehydrated last night and they gave her an IV...but it could have ruined her kidneys and she would have gone in to kidney failure and died.
Her computer has been screwed up for days because my son was trying to hook an XBOX live wireless remote up...and somehow it blocked her signal...and she wasn't able to send or receive anything or get on the internet.....but this morning 1 email made it through....and then it quit again.
I couldn't believe what it was...it was an email sent to her by a friend...I am going to try and post it...because I couldn't believe the first paragraph of what it said:

If you ask for soda or pop, how does the server know what variety you want? Do you want Coke, Fanta, Sprite, lemon, etc? Soda/pop is an umbrella term really.
Here in Australia we ask for exactly what we want - a jug of Coke, or a glass of Lift.
I remember years ago there was a thread here about the coke/soda/pop debate and I remember seeing that map.

E-coli is one of those things you hear about alot, but don't think you'll ever get it.
I make sure everything we eat and touch is clean, and well cooked. You can get it from unpasturized milk and apple juice...and it can be on Lettuce and Tomatoes.
I remember not long ago a school had it in strawberry milk.
I have to report it today to the Health Department ...they are going to have to send a food inspector there.
I know that's where she got it from, because the meat was still red....and I said...yuck, that doesn't even look cooked, and she said that was the way she always had her steak done, and I even said...that's not good. But, other people eat stuff rare, but you should never do that.
Anyway...here's something else that annoys me to no end, and it happens every day...it's the news.
This morning I was waiting for my contractors to get here ...they are working on remodelling my living room, and I was watching the News....someone broke in to the place that they had been collecting all the Toys for Tots (for Christmas), and stole all the toys ...including 26 bicycles. It's like a real life Grinch.
It's horrible when people are out there working to give to less fortunate people...and then someone steals everything.
Then they talked about a 13 year old boy was shot in the head and killed.
Someone's house was broken in to, and robbed, and they shot their dog (it lived)...but every thing in the news is so horrible any more....it's like people are use to it.
I just want to hear that there are good things happening.
I wonder all the time why people can ever stand to watch the news. Even when I travel and turn on a TV to watch the weather-I get bombarded with horrible stories.

ISIS, I am so sorry about your mom. I hope she is able to get over this quickly. Make sure that the docs are keeping track of her red blood cell count. Some migrain meds can lower it anyway, and with having e-coli on top of that is can make it worse. Also her platelet count. You can get e-coli so many different ways. I hope when the inspector goes today, they are able to find what caused it. Like employees not washing their hands, contaminated water used for cleaning...so on. I wish you both my best. If you need anything let me know. Or if you have questions, I know a lot about e-coli from the old biz.
So on to daily annoyances....I was going through my christmas lights last week, and on the stand of lights it says "for indoor or outdoor use only". Where else can I use them? Just wondering!

This annoyance is directed to what Isis is saying about the news, and says a lot about our society in general. Over the past few years I have seen some amazing, unreported, unheralded things. One time I was a few csutomers behind a guy who threathened the cashier and took off with some money. He ran out of the storwe, and about three guys ran after him, tackled him pinned him down while police got there. These were just random people walking by. I looked at the paper the next day and there was no mention of it. Real heroes walk the street and no one acknowledges. Maybe it undermines the police's role in these affairs I don't know. But it makes you think how much great stuff goes on but doesn't get printed because good news doesn't sell papers.

This is one reason why I am a well, well, well done steak person. I don't want my cow mooing when it comes to the table, LOL. I was at an Outback last year, and I gave the well, well, well done speech, and the guy looked at me kinda confused and said, "Do you want them to burn it?" I thought, you idiot, did I say BURN???
Ya'll know how at McDonald's they always try to get you to try something off their dollar menu? Well there's this little guy at our local McD's...he's kinda mentally challenged...and he's the only one who says, "Would you like to try two apple pies for a dollar?" I think to myself, if I wanted two apple pies, I would say so. I know he's just trying to do what he's told, but really.
Oh, and around my little part of the universe, it's pop. If someone ordered soda, some people would have no clue what they were talking about.

Ordering a steak medium rare is enough to kill any bacteria on the steak. However, it sounds as thought there was probably cross-contamination. Does the steak place also sell hamburgers? Some slob in the kithen probably put a steak on the counter where a raw burger had previously been placed. The whole well done steak thing-yuck! You should just order shoe leather or rawhide if you order a well done steak. That is why I refuse to ever go out to eat at a steak place with my mother. She orders it well done, and no matter where we're at, she gripes that it's tough. Then my poor father, who always orders med. well, trades with her,even though he has a partial bridge in his teeth, just so she will shut her piehole. Then she gobbles down his med. well steak and says his was just a much better steak. This has happened probably 20 times, so I just don't go out to eat with them anymore because she makes it a miserable experience. Anyhoo, Google about cooking steaks and why you have to cook hamburger well done and steaks can be cooked med. rare and still have bacteria killed. The hambuger is ground, so all of the bacteria gets ground into it. I bought a cow in the spring time, and we split it with our friend. I always wash my steaks (or chicken or fish) off under running water before cooking too.

I contacted the Department of Health, and I gave them some information, then they said they'd call me back. So, I haven't heard back yet.
My mom is just resting and talking it easy.
E-coli is bacteria...it comes from fecal contamination, and it gets on food and people don't know it, and they ingest it, and they get the bacteria in their intestinal tract and it just goes crazy in there.
I read that 2000 people are hospitalized a year with it (that didn't seem like many to me)...but 60 of them die.
I am scared about the whole thing...a couple of my friends know a little bit about the place where she got it from, and they said the owners are not the most upstanding group...so they said to becareful...But it's out of my hands...it has to be reported.
If a child or elderly person got it...they could die real easy...my mom isn't the most healthy person on the planet...so she is in serious trouble.
It makes me mad...because I am a neat FANATIC...to the extreme....I worry about germs and stuff....and my house is spotless ...you could eat off the floor here, and I see alot of places that really are not clean....and nothing happens to those people. It's like they have built up immunity from disease from living in a filthy environment. It is scary.

That's it I'm going vegetarian! I really don't eat much red meat these days, although it doesn't get much better than a BBQ steak in the summer. I've always been a fan of the medium-well done, and I've gotten flak for it too, "oooh, you like your steak grey"? I feel some vindication now. Does e-coli have some sort of connection to mad cow disease?

E-coli has nothing to do with mad cow. Many healthy cows do cary the e-coli bacteria in their intestines though. You can get e-coli from undercooked ground beef because it does come in contact with the intestines. However, you can't e-coli from a cut of steak alone (such as a strip, flank, sirlion) it comes from cross contamination from orther sources. Like employees not washing their hands before food hadling after going to the bathroom, water that is contaminated, you can get it from milk that has not been pasturized thouraghly, vegetables that have been exposed to fecal matter and not washed properly. The possibilities are endless. But in the end, it comes from fecal matter. Humans, animals and even bugs.
For all of you who are worried about eating undercooked steak, as long as your grill is 550 degrees, e-coli is not an issue. E-coli sits on the surface and that temperature will kill the bacteria. Even if you like rare, as long as the outside has been in contact with the grill for more than 30 seconds it will kill it. But be sure that after your steak is finished it does not touch any surface that could possibly be contaminated, especially the tongs or utensils you used to place the steak on the grill. They were in direct contact with the uncooked outside of the meat. There are other things to worry about though...sorry. However as long as you know your beef is coming from a reputable butcher and slaughter farm, I would not be concerned. I eat steak medium rare. I also only tend to eat steak when I am ate home, or at a steakhouse who has had excellent health inspections and all cooks are serve safe certified. My fave, Ruth's Chris.
Mad Cow disease on the other hand is not believed to be caused by bacteria, viral, toxins, chemicals or anything else. The theory is it is caused by a prion protein, wich is a mutated cell. Most cows do show signs of mad cow in early stages. They are typically removed from the farm. The most commmon way to become afflicted by mad cow would be by eating the brain matter or spinal cord of cow suffered from BSE (mad cow). This is not very common and would not worry about it in the least.
Sorry...I am having old flashbacks from the restaurant days. I gave this speech a lot. Many customers inquired about these things.
Feel free to ask for a copy of a restaurant's health inspection when you go. It is public, and there for you to view. Most inspectors will actually count how many times employees wash their hands. That is always interesting!! Ok I will stop my rambling now!
Brand new annoyance......If you know you are going to have to pee every 20 minutes on a 14 hour flight...either one, limit your fluid intake instead of downing a bottle of juice every 30 minutes, or two, sit in an aisle seat not the window, or three, wear a depends! I was trying to round up cash from some of my fellow annoyed row on the plane to pay of the stewardess. We could only come up with 30 bucks in cash...no luck!

Ecoli-can actually stay alive on a surface of a counter for up to 2 weeks, you don't need to ingest much of it to harm yourself.
EleanorJune-Did you ever hear if people can eat certain foods to counter act the bacteria? Like we were wondering about yogurt...because it has live active cultures in it...and they tell people to eat it for certain things to help it go away. So, we didn't know about this.
Here's an annoyance of mine....going to concerts and people heckling the performer. When people start to drink, their mouths start to flap, and they think they are cool stuff. When we saw Hall and Oates...half way through the concert, this group of college students shows up, and they sit down behind us..nobody was there for 1/2 an hour...we were having a great time.
Then this group comes in, and they are all drunk, and the one girl kept standing up and she kept dancing like a total sleaze, and it was totally distracting. They kept yelling things out loud. The one guy, hit my son in the back of the head with his foot. I really do not like getting in to any kind of problems with people at concerts, especially drunks. But, I put my arm around the back of my son's seat, and I thought if that guy's foot comes down near his head one more time, I was going to grab hold of it and yank him out of his seat. They must have got the hint, because I gave them a dirty look, and I said to my husband if they do 1 more thing...go get a security guard.
But, I have seen other people at concerts who weren't close enough to me...but I could hear them...and they hoot and hollar and act like fools. It is one thing to be having a good time, but I can not stand drunks and loud mouth people.

I don't know how well a dairy product would sit in her tummy. That may make nausea worse. Drinking plenty of fluids to help keep from dehydration is the best thing I have ever heard. I have also heard green tea helps some of the tummy aches and helps push the bacteria out. Just don't like her take anything like pepto. That actually slows the process of recovery. I am sure the docs told you that already though. I wish I had a cure all for you.

Yeah they told her that, after she already took an entire box of Immodium. She's been drinking Gatorade by the tons. We do drink Green Tea here, so I'll tell her about that. Thanks!

I have another MAJOR annoyance...it has to do alot with another topic -and that's what made me think of it, because I was talking to my mom today about the American Idol suicide. That's actually the 2nd horrible thing in the past month surrounding American Idol, 1st was the Jennifer Hudson thing- which I have never heard yet if they arrested anyone for- it never seems like they can ever convict a person of a crime any more. The guilty person is always still wandering the streets as a "person of interest"...When people have prior histories of attempted homicide and weapons possession-and it isn't like they are a nice upstanding person... why don't they get cracking on convicting people.
Anyway....last night I am flipping through the channels....and there's nothing on....that Chelsea Handler is a person who annoys me to no end....and TV shows like "The Soup" and "The Dish" on E!, all those shows are about: they are making fun of someone...and just about every reality show out there....they make fun of people.
I am so sick of that...there is never positive reinforcement...it is constant negativity.
Even watching "Dancing with the Stars"...sometimes I want to strangle the yell at the judges for being so mean and rude...the celebrities usually don't have much dance background-that is what is cool- is how fast they learn...but then they nit pick them way too much at times, and sometimes they say really mean things.
I get so sick and tired of hearing negativity all the time on ever single thing on TV.
I told my mom again today ...how much I miss TV from the 70's and 80s....my mom use to watch the Tv show "All Creatures Great and Small, and she watched a PBS show called " Are You Being Served?"...and those shows were funny and entertaining. I just don't understand what happened with TV.
I don't know how older people can stand it at all.

Isis you know I love you and I'll always fight for your right to be able to express yourself here, but I do disagree with you a little here. I think it's kinda funny how you mention the "Are you being served" TV show after talking about the junk in music of today.
"Are you being served" is crammed full of sexual innuendo and double entendres that would never be acceptable in todays TV. EG -
Mrs Slocombe - "What about this fog? My pussy's been gasping all night!" Mrs Slocombe - "Captain Pea****, I do not respond to any man's finger" Mr Grainger - "Mrs Slocombe, I suggest you take your underwear down at once!"

Stitch-I never watched 1 episode of Are you Being Served....but my mom watched it all the time, all I knew was it had a bunch of old people in it, so I thought it was a show geared towards elderly people. (But those quotes are pretty bad) I thought it might be the age range of The Golden Girls...but I guess that show had a bunch of sexual innuendos too....to me though...even still, an innuendo is better than watching people actually do it on some reality show.
I can't explain it...but even Benny Hill...who was really bad....he doesn't seem bad anymore to me...in comparison to "Desperate Housewives".

Back in the early 80's they bought the cast of Are you being served to Australia for a season - called "Are you being served Down Under".
They'd never get away with making a tv show like that anymore! And the craziest thing is that it was practically considered a family sitcom!
It's weird isn't it, some things that were considered shocking years ago don't really bother anyone anymore... yet shows like "Are you being Served" and "Benny Hill" which were standard then are considered shocking today.

Well...because I see enough stuff in the previews for Desperate Housewives...and have seen clips of Desperate Housewives on different things, that the previews are so bad...that I can't even imagine what the whole show is like. I read a TV Guide article about it too, and thought how bad it sounded. Plus...that was just 1 of a "Bazillion" shows out there...and I just happened to name it as an example.

i watched desperate housewife once i din;'t care for it not my cup of tea anyways i am more into sci-fi and ghost shows myself and i never watched the other show either i always thought it was for old people too lol we use to watch benny hill years ago then they took it off hubby has his dvd from the old shows but the thing is after years of not watching it when you do it is not as funny now? i did like the old laugh-in shows and monty python which they still show here on pbs dee

Back to daily annoyances. I carry around 60-80 pounds of equipment when I am out photographing for work. Here I am with a camera shoved to my face...a big camera mind you...a huge bag around my waist, and I find it rather annoying when people come up to me, tap me on the shoulder and ask "what are you doing". I am starting to run out of stupid answers!

Here's a lovely story I have for you all. It is rather disgusting, but a common occurence. I am in the bathroom at a public facility, doing my deed at the urinal and in walks a man talking on his cell phone. He proceeds to do his business right next to me while still holding his phone in one hand and "it" in the other. OK, pretty bad so far, but it gets worse. Now he's done....does he put down the phone to wash his hands? Nope. He continues to yap away and exit the restroom while still holding that phone to his ear. Yes....he has to open the door with his other hand which was holding the "appendage". In other words, please don't ever touch a restroom door or knob with your bare hand. You're only asking for trouble.

Here is an annoyance- our digital cable just went out. Luckily, one of our tv's is not connected to digital, it is still on basic cable, so my husband is able to watch the Steelers/Chargers game. We pay so much money each month for digital service,yet it goes off at the most inopportune moments. Why couldn't it have gone out at 3 am while everyone is sleeping?

i agree with you pittsburgh girl we have time warner basic cable here and pay 60 bucks a month and our channels go out all the time and look like crap alot with double images etc.especially channel 4 and that is a local station cbs here? and cable is going up 3 more bucks soon? why? they suck!! pardon my french but we decided we are getting a dish soon and canceling the cable just ridiculous!!! dee

Our cable just went up $5 a couple of months ago. Where are the congressmen who were supposed to be investigating the reason for the price increases? It went up a total of $10 last year (2008). That's ridiculous. That is $120 per year. Maybe the cable companies are paying off the congressmen now, so they don't get investigated. I don't want the Dish, I've seen to many problems with them.

women's public restrooms are disgusting. i've never been in a men's restroom, but from what i am told.. women are way worse. i cannot stand public restrooms, but whenever i must go into one...my goodness, women can be down right filthy as well.

Public washrooms are disgusting. I've seen so many where they cover the seat in toilet paper so not to get germs on their touches, then mounds of unflushed paper and crap inside the bowl. Proof there are a lot of non-toilet trained adults.

I was in Melbourne last week and had to use one of those automatic public toilets. It was a TERRIFYING experience!
You press the button on the outside to open the door, then press another on the inside to make it close. As soon as it closes, loud Musak starts to play, in this case it "What the world needs now, is love sweet love". The sign on the door said that it would open automatically in 5 minutes, so god help anyone with special "needs" hehe.
Even getting toilet paper involved pressing a button (ewwww), the soap, water, and air dryer were all automatic and timed, and to top it all off, there was no mirror, only polished metal!
I was so glad to get out of there alive and on time!!!!

I do a lot of traveling and have seen many different kinda of bathrooms. Stich, the automatic toilet is like nothing I have ever seen before! I have been in some pretty desolate areas...but I don't think I would want to use an automatic one like that!
I would feel under pressure if I had a time limit! I don't know about everyone else.

I don't know what I'd do with a timer-toilet, LOL. I like the automatic ones cause you don't have to worry about using an elbow or foot to flush. I've used my foot, but I'm always afraid if I'm wearing sandals or flip flops they'll fall in, so sometimes I just use toilet paper (CLEAN!!) to touch the handle with.
Sam, kids wash more cause we yell at them so much about it at school!!
