I just cant help thinking what ive always thought "What looks cool on my arm at 25 isnt gonna look cool on my arm when I'm 80!"
I'm 37 and when I think back to what I WANTED to get when I was in my early 20s...geez, would that look stupid by now!
I know a guy who has all the horror monsters from Frankenstein to Freddy Krueger and if I had the NERVE (or stupidity) thats probably what I would get.
My husband has tattoos (he got them before we met) and he loves them but theres one that I sort of look at on him and think "God thats gonna look so dumb when you're showing it to people in our retirement home".

I am all for artwork, but just not on your body.
I like to draw and paint, but not on myself.
I do think they are a fad....but what is scary is...if you cover up your skin...and down the road you develop skin cancer...how are you going to know, if your covered in ink. If you have a mole or even freckles, and you colored on them-your not going to know if one changes colors to go get it checked.
They make gorgeous temporary tattoos, and you can change them around....if you like tattoos-that's what I think would be cool. Because once you pick something...your stuck for life with it. If you used temporary ones, you could change them all the time, you could coordinate them with your outfit.
I always stick them on my face at Halloween, but the idea of never getting that off of my skin, just freaks me out.
I have heard they are very painful, and I can't imagine why so many people are afraid of needles, but they will go get a tattoo.
I have seen lots of people...regret them.
When I think of tattoos I think of criminals, and carnival workers....so I never have gotten over that imagine, that I have always kind of thought they were trashy.
My own mother has 2 of them. She has a yellow rose, and a rainbow ...she went with my Aunt and got one...my Aunt got a dolphin with a sunset in the background....when I saw it I thought she had a giant bruise on her leg, and the sunset looked like mercurchrome.
All I kept thinking about was...when you get old and your skin looses all of it's firmness...your going to have a big blob there, and you'll look like you have age spots every where.
I am not sure why people get tattoos in places that nobody will ever see them...if you want one...then show it.
All the body piercing stuff freaks me out too, I have no clue why anyone wants to do that either. I am not liking the retainer that I have on the inside of my teeth, that I am suppose to keep for years...to keep my teeth straight....it bothers my tongue constantly, and I don't like how it feels....I can not imagine piercing my tongue and having a metal ball in my mouth, and what it would feel like against my teeth, and trying to eat.
My husband says every time he goes to Wal-Mart his attention is diverted to reading everyone's tattoos.
I have never even seen an attractive person look enhanced by tattoos, I actually think even though the artwork on some of them is amazing-and I can appreciate that....but when I see it on someone's body...I think it totally distracts from the person, and I think they make a person look unattractive.
I have never understood how tattoos have become so popular.

I have a really small one. It is the Japanese character for "tiger", which is my zodiac sign. I got it in Japan and have special memories attached to getting it. Nobody ever sees it, not even when I'm wearing a bikini, so it is a private memory for me and I still love to be reminded of the time when I got it.

I am so amazed at how many people actually have tattoos.
I remember I worked in a nursing home in the 80's, and there was an old lady that had a spider tattooed on her hand, and everyone knew from the time period that she got that tattoo, that she had to be a wild woman, because it just wasn't common for women to have tattoos.
A guest, who stayed here, she had a tattoo on her hand of a heart...that she did herself...she said it's how people did it themselves in prison, they burned the ink off cigarette wrappers on to their skin. I thought about how bad that would have hurt. It seems like a form of self mutilation to me. I can not wrap my head around why anyone wants to permanently mark their bodies up.
I look at so many celebrities from the 80's (mostly men)...who went from being clean cut...to now they look like criminals, and I can't see the transition.
I just don't get it.

all respectable tattooists will not give somebody a tat if they're intoxicated. If your drunk and an artist is willing to ink you up that should be a warning flag about him and his practice.

I have four tats and the only one that hurt was the one that goes completely around my bicep; and then that only hurt on the underside. I know a lot of people who get a tattoo around their bicep but they only go 3/4 of the way around because of the pain factor.

If people name something a "tramp stamp"...it's like they are giving a label to what they think of that whole thing. I have never thought belly button rings are sexy on women, but that seemed to be a big thing too, and everyone was running out to get those. That's something that down the road you can get rid off, tattoos are forever.
My mom and I were talking about this, and she said it's everyone's choice and what I think is not necessarily what others do, and I know that...I think it really is because I think they take away from a person, and not add to them.
I think I am very conservative...I could never wear a shirt that showed cleavage, and girls do it all the time...I have always thought that looks trashy too....I asked my mom if she could even picture me wearing something like that...not even on my best day in the 80's...did I ever reveal my body like that. Now, if a woman has a tattoo right on her breast...you can see it, because they have everything hanging out.
It's weird because I was thinking about this whole subject the other night. I was thinking about ..no guy I ever dated had a tattoo-but 1, and he was in the military and I remember when he showed it to me, he said that all the guys that he was buddies with, they all went together to get them as a symbol...what it was... was the yin and the yang symbol...I think about now...does he look at that mark on his arm and remember why he did that.
It does mark a time period in your life...Even in pictures, you can date them..from looking at yourself with a tattoo, and know approximately the date.
I looked at the Lizardman's website, because I have seen him before on TV, and never could imagine why anyone would ever do that...if you read his bio...he seems semi normal from how he talks...but then you see pictures of him and things he does...like there's people out there that hang themselves from hooks, I guess they call that "suspension"....I think why would anyone ever do that to themselves....so then I think that guy has got to be nuts.
But he is exactly what I think of when I think of tattoos...I think of the tattooed lady at the carnival, and how that was a side show/freak attraction...when I was even a kid, and now if you don't have a tattoo , your the one who's different.

I personally do not care for tatoos. But one of my friends, who has passed away, had a really nice one of a Native American chief. It was huge-it was on his bicep on his right arm. But he had to get it re-colored almost every year because it faded from him being in the sun. Other than that one, I don't think they are for me. I have seen some beautifully done tats, and I've seen some really ugly ones. One of my hubby's freinds has one that is supposed to just be a regular tiger, but I think it looks pansy- It looks more like a mini Tony the Tiger or something. And another girl I know has some ridiculous one on her calf- it's really juvenile looking, and drawn horribly too. It's something with a castle. Ugly! And the worst are tramp stamps- the girls who have them that live around here are exactly that- tramps.

Maybe they're tramps from there....but that doesn't make them all tramps. I have friends and have dated girls with tats on their backs and they're not tramps at all.

When exactly did they start calling them tramp stamps? I never heard them being called that before. I've heard them called stripper tatoos and I even saw a Jerry Oconnell late night tv appearance where he called them california licence plates.
I think tats these days are going beyond the sterotypes. 20-30 years ago they meant the counter-culture, rebellion, stuff that tough guys had maybe if they were bikers, a real working class thing. The actual art aspect of the thing wasn't really put to the forefront.
I think maybe punk/alternative culture entering into the mainstream has blurred the lines today. You don't have to own a motorbike or play loud, aggresive musice to sport one, as all types have them now. A lot more designs these days compared to the anchor and I love mom design of yesteryear. Books and books of designs out there, I'm sure there are fanatics out there that lament that they only have one body to house 1000's of potential designs.

I think the whole tramp stamp started around the time girls jeans started getting lower and shirts were bellyshirts so when a girl bent over you'd see a flash of her tattoo and underwear haha thats what i always thought!
Sorry but nowadays everyone and their mother has tattoos......(my mom in fact went to Ireland and came back with a big celtic cross on her back two years ago)It's a way to decorate yourself.....a way for people to show things they love a way to feel indiviual. I'm always for people being who they are and not judging them!

But...that's exactly why I don't like them...I just think they seem trashy...and honestly I don't have any friends in real life that have a tattoo....aside from my mother...my brother doesn't, and none of my friends do.
I don't care that people do them...I just think they are distracting...and sometimes you can't help but to stare at them....and then people wonder what your looking at, because your trying to figure out what the heck the picture even is.
I don't understand the "symbols" there's tons of symbols that mean a saying....who would know it....so I never understand what kind of statement people want to make by doing that.
I never understand people tattooing someone's name on them....look at how many celebs have done that...ask Johnny Depp about his Winona Ryder tattoo, and see if he's still happy he got it.

Your respectable tattoo artists usually frown upon getting somebodys name as a tattoo. I'm sure if you say it's the name of your kid or a dead relative it's not a problem but most won't put a boyfriend or girlfriends name on somebodys body.

I have two so far. My first one was actually paid for by my mom! The day before my 18th birthday I went with my mom, sister, and best friend (non biological sister) and we all got these stars on the back of our necks. We each have three of them and they are of our favourite colours.
The second one is a butterfly that I drew when I had just gotten back from a trip with my mom and we were having dinner at Elias Bros (Big Boy) with my grandmother and my aunt. So it reminds me of some of the most important girls in my life (minus my sister and neice that is)
It also has a nice little bonus meaning...in my car, before it broke down, I would keep Sharpies and have people sign the roof, doors, seats, dashboard, or whatever. I was at Peace Fest and my now boyfriend wrote a little hidden note by the back window that I had to find. It was "If you catch a beautiful butterfly set it free and if it comes back it was truly meant to be"
It was SOOOO cute and many other things happened that weekend that made me realize that he's the one that I had been subconsciounsley looking for.
Oh and I got the butterfly actually tattooed the day before my High School graduation. So I guess I have to wait for another big occasion to get tattooed the day before...
I have at least 7 more that I want to get, I just don't have the money right now. sadness

I think that's really true. Not trying to say anything about people who don't like them but to say that it's trashy I think is flat out rude.
It's self expression. It's like the whole "Don't judge a book by it's cover" situation. If you think that tattoos are "trashy" or what have you, you don't look at the person the same.
Would you think it's "trashy" that I want to get a memorial piece done for my grandfather who died of a massive heart attack? How about the one I'm going to get in memory of my uncle who killed himself a few months ago?
Not to sound mean but I think that people should just be more accepting of others decisions. That's one of the major downfalls of mankind. Lack of acceptance.

Getting a partners name in ink is always a risk, people and their lives change and you are stuck with them forever unless you want a skin graft!
I think there's different reasons people get tats, I know quite a few who got friends and relatives names who have passed on inked. It's a personal thing for some people, although I know a few who do it more to show off or even compete with people on who has the most gnarly ink and such. A girl I knew paid almost 2K to get this huge tatoo to cover her back, that's going to be quite a story to tell if she becomes a grandma! I really couldn't justify paying that either.
I;m more partial to the smaller ones of cartoons or flowers on girls like on their ankle or places less obvious. I saw a Betty Boop one someone had that looked cool.

Now here's what I am talking about...This is a picture of my cousin...she doesn't care that I posted these pictures...she's a model, an actress, a 4 time world karate champ, and a massage therapist, and owns her own gym, plus she trains the police department in self defense, and numerous other things-she has her own line of fitness tapes...she just did her own calendar...so pictures of her are all over the place...
She placed 4th in the Miss Fitness America pagent....
Her body is in such fantastic shape...I can not imagine her actually messing with it...

Tattoos were around before carnival workers though. The IceMan that was found a couple years ago had tattoos. They've been used for worship, to show the reaching of adulthood, or (like among Samoins) it's passing on family heritage.
I think it's sad that people only think of the negative stigmas asscoiated with things like tattoos. I honestly don't understand it myself...

And the pain hasn't really bothered me. I have the one on the back of my neck and the other behind my ear and they only felt hot to me and I could feel my head like vibrating. It's weird but, I Love them myself!

that's how i feel about the pain. it's a good feeling.
but some spots are just killer and take all my strength not to move(center of chest and ankle come to mind).

The feet on my upper ribcage hurt. I can withstand pain over a long period of time, but I don;t have much tolerance for intense pain. The ribs burned. Plus I got really puffy afterwards from it. It was the only one that made me bleed too.

I was watching Comedy Central last night, and Jeff Foxworthy was doing a whole comedy routine about tattoos, I actually thought he might be pro tattoo, but he shocked me and was saying how stupid he thought they were. He said how they seem real "cute" when you have a nice body and are 20, but in 20 more years when your cute tattoo of a Hummingbird becomes a buzzard, or your dolphin becomes a beluga whale, or your rose becomes Rosie O'donnell with a mouth full of leaves...you may regret it. He said wait until you have grandchildren and they don't want to come visit you because you have a buzzard on your back, and they run out of the room screaming....or how do people tell their children to say no to drugs, with a pot plant tattooed on the side of their neck.
He said he associates tattoos with Sailors and Hell's Angels, and people that use to get tattoos...the artistry was so bad, you couldn't tell what it was...he was making fun of bad tattooing.
It was funny to me, because usually the audience is always laughing really hard at his jokes....they weren't so much on these. But, I thought of the Rewind and this topic, as I listened and I was hoping to track it down on youtube, but I couldn't find it.
I also just read a report on tattoos and how they make detecting melonoma alot harder, the more you have, the bigger they are, and the darker they are...the harder it is to detect skin cancer.
I also just read that HIV can be transmitted through Tattoo needles that aren't cleaned properly.
You can also get Hepititis.
I read that the American Association of Blood Banks requires a 1 year wait for people getting a tattoo to donate blood.

You know the more I was reading about tattooing-the more scarier it is.
You can get what are called Keloid formations, which is permanent scaring.
You can have problems with getting an MRI if you have tattoos.
It says they do distort over time, and the actual image will change, and people can become embarrassed by what they look like, because what they start out like, isn't what they end up to be.
I do think that people really should do some researching on it...there is a ton of bad stuff about them, actually I didn't read 1 positive thing about them, they sure don't improve your health.
They can cost up to $100,000 to have them removed, and they can be very difficult to cover up or fix once they start to deteriorate.
Sometimes they can never be removed completely.

You can get Keloid formations from any sort of cut to your skin. My sister has them from her mastectomy. I get MRI's every 6 months for a condition I have had since childhood, never had a problem.
Most people who get tattoos already know the scary side of it. Did you know that it is possible to die from an infection you get from having your ears peirced? You also have facial nerves that run through your earlobes and you can puncture one causing permanent facial paralysis.
No matter what you are talking about there is going to be a downside. Slim in most cases, but still there, and yet people do it.
Tattoing is a personal choice and should be left at that. I am not ignorant to what the small chances of having these side effects. But I am much more likely to die from a killer whale attack in Indiana than I am from dying from an MRI distater from a tatoo.

It sounds like that stupid thing going around that if you wear glitter anywhere on your face and some got in your eye, and you had an MRI you could go blind from the glitter ripping through. It was a sad time for all strippers I know, but it was finally proven a hoax!

I am saying anything that is a permanent thing to do, that is pretty much irreversible...people should really think about it. I think what some people are saying about themselves is true....but I know a young girl who got a tattoo on her stomach, and it's a giant Tree...she's only 18 years old....people think they are hip and cool....and at 18 years old...to go do something irreversible ....it is not a smart thing...every 18 year old will say that they know what they want now, and that will never change, and every 40 year old says....that it does...
I think right now...there is alot of peer pressuring on the whole tattooing thing, with wanting to be like everyone else and wanting to fit in...so people go with their friends and get a tattoo...then in 2 years they never speak to those people again...and are stuck with some crazy spur of the moment thing on themselves.
I am not talking that every single person is going to have these things happen...but I think about everyone saying they love them...come back and tell me in 10 years what you think.

I know my friend's husband has a different woman's name tattooed on his arm than her, and so did my Aunt's husband...and they didn't want to go under the needle again to correct it, so they are stuck for life with it. It can be a reminder of a good time in your life, but it can go both ways on that too, and be a constant reminder of someone you wish you could forget but have to look at every day.

The MRI thing has to do with the age of your tattoo.
I have had one of my pieces for just shy of 10 years. I love it more today than I did when I got it. And in ten years when we talk about it again, I promise you the answer will be the same.
If that girl wanted a giant tree, than more power to her. It's her body, it's her choice, it's her life. Being 18 doesn't make her less intelligent about the lifelong commitment she is making to it.

My cousin has a tattoo of a poofed up bird, with his feathers all rumpled up, and one eye closed, it's right on the middle of his chest....He got it when he was 19. He's 31 now. He looks at it, and says it's stupid looking, and he doesn't like the artistry either...he looks at the way newer ones look, and thinks ...he wished he would have waiting for a better quality one.
I can only talk about what I have seen in my own world, with the people I know...or things people have told me...since I really don't know that many people with them....that are really close to me....then I can't say too much about them at all.
I just know if I were talking to my own son, when he becomes 18...I know he doesn't want one, but if he did...I would say...wait until your older.
I was 18 at one time too, and I thought I was really mature-I lived on my own and paid my own bills and thought I knew everything....my life could have been completely altered by choices I made at 18...I realize that being 18 doesn't make you stupid...but you can do stupid stuff...which is totally different.

I honestly don't care if someone else is tattooed on every square inch of their body...it isn't me...it isn't hurting me...and actually has no bearing on my life one bit...so it is something I do think is a personal choice, but my whole point is to look in to it and read about them.
Like I said...I have been creeped out over tattoos....I grew up during the time period of Charles Mansun, and I remember the crosses on their foreheads, and I always have that image in the back of my mind of tattoos and creepy people...and that's me.
I was totally freaked out last year on American Idol, when the one girl-who I can't remember her name right now-but I liked her- her husband's entire face was tattooed.....I couldn't help but think how strange he looked, and what does he think when he looks in the mirror. I don't think it is attractive...but he must like it. And if he doesn't and he changed his mind and regrets it...then that would be sad.
Not even on the arms of Rick Springfield, do I find myself thinking any different.

I've had 2 MRI's done (one on my head and one on my knee) and I'm still here. Once your son turns 18 he can get his whole body tattooed lol. My folks tried to talk me out of my first one at 18 but I had my mind made up regardless. Mine was far from being peer pressure. I consider it art personally.........

I liked that Jeff Foxworthy said if he was going to get a tattoo it would be something worthwhile like....his anniversary date and his wife's birthday.

Oh...and what's a huge connecting factor to some celebrities and tattoos...is that when they were younger (and some still do it) they self mutilated themselves....Angelia Jolie is another one that did the same thing.

I just looked at the Top 100 hottest celebrities that are tattooed, and I couldn't tell what any of theirs were ...plus the symbolism of Hebrew words, or chinese sayings, and all that...none of these people speak those languages...so what is up with that?
Heather Locklear has Ritchie Sambora's name on her, plus David Spade's character's name "Finch"...tattooed on her...she's not even with those guys.
Denise Richards has :Charlie Sheen tattooed on her...I think these people jump the gun...
I think you have to be insecure to tattoo someone's name on your body.....it's like "property of" I think people think it is flattering...
If I tattooed the name of ever person I dated from when I was 18-21....I would have run out of skin.

isis, you spend far too much time listening to that idiot jeff foxworthy. you've already mentioned him twice, that's two times too many.
people who get other peoples names(aside from their children) tattoo'd on them are stupid. that's what not to do 101.
people who regret getting tattoo'd years later are also stupid and only got inked to try to be cool in the first place, which they probably never were. so they deserve all the regret they have and i have no sympathy for them.
temporary tattoos are rediculous as are the people who get them. please stop trying to be cool. it's about as cool as a clip on tie.
literally, almost everyone i know and hang out with has ink. my two best friends are sleeved. my brother is sleeved. i have one sleeve and my chest done. my wife even has some. i know three artists personally who run their own shop. i have never heard nor encountered anybody that has any of the problems you've mentioned. i'm not saying that the problems you mentioned aren't valid, but i believe what you are talking about are worst case scenarios and not the norm.

Wow, this is quite the debate. Anyway it's 2008 and getting inked is big business. Anyone here contemplated working in the industry at one point? I assume it's an apprenticeship learning the trade, is there a lot of overturn? Or are good artists hard to find?

Here's a story about her that is very detailed ...her and her brother's lives were a mess as kids, and I am not saying that's her fault, but she did come out of it with some real emotional scars, and they seem much deeper than any physical scar:
She has talked openly about what all kinds of mental issues she has...and the tattoos aren't what I meant about mental stuff...the self injuring is what I was talking about.
There has been so much in the news about the way those kids are being raised....because a person is a celebrity...does not automatically make them a Mother the year....look at Joan Crawford.

I see nothing in that article that raises alarms about her mental state except for a claim by her estranged father which could easily be called sour grapes because she's become a huge star and his career has tanked.
Why bring up her having what you call 'mental issues' in a thread about tattoos if you didn't think they were connected?
A lot of what was written in the book and later in the movie 'Mommie Dearest' has been disputed.

The things with getting HIV or Hepatitis from getting tattoos, if you go to a place where that could remotely be an issue, GET OUT! At least that's what I do. Most places now make you watch them throw the needle away into the biohazard thing in the room.
I like this thing a piercer at a tattoo shop told us when my friend asked if they had any cheap tattoos, "A good tattoo is not cheap. A cheap tattoo is not good."

I know that all apprenticeships depend on the artist you're studying under. Nakita (the piercer) does apprenticeships that go on for a year and you're not allowed to talk to the guys that work at the shop because she doesn't want you to get hurt (if you're a girl that is.) But all artists have their own times and things that they expect out of you. Some cost WAY more than others as well. I have some friends that were looking at apprenticing but oddly enough, both of them are pregnant now and kind of have different things at the forefront now. Hmmmm...
I would love to do some work but I'd be to scared to mess something up and have people hate me.

I LOOOOVVVEE the photoshopped one my friend did for me. The one of the butterfly I just kind of did a trial and error with my digital camera to get it.
That photo (the butterfly) is actually how my parents found out I had that tattoo! I didn't try hiding it, I wore my hair back and was CONSTANTLY tucking my hair behind my ear actually! They just didn't notice until I posted a photo on myspace. Odd. I know.

I mentioned earlier that I wanted to get a tatt of a line of music across my chest from shoulder to shoulder... but after someone mentioned keloid scars I might be best off not having a tatt at all. Any cut I have ends up as a keloid scar - you should see the one across my throat from the thyroidectomy I had 15 years ago! I have scars all over the top of my hands from canulas I've had in hospital, and lots of tiny pin prick scars on my arms from blood tests.
I have a hugely obvious scar on my wrist from when I did something silly at the height of my depression... but now I'm proud of it coz it reminds me that things will never be that bad again.
So to make a long story short, I guess I won't be getting a tattoo in case it scars up. I'm a little disappointed, but hey, I'll just go get some more piercings and some new hair colour!

Stitch-you can always get temporary tattoos, and those would actually cover up scars...and not make them...and they are a heck of alot cheaper.
Check in to it...you can have custom tattoos created off pictures of anything you want, people get their company logos...they actually make them to last pretty long, and I think it's cool, because you know what it's going to look like before you put it on your body, and if you don't like it...it doesn't matter...it can come off...and you can change them around. I honestly think that is cooler...because if someone does develop an "addiction" to them...then they will run out of skin. This way you don't have to worry about if you get skin cancer.
talking about scars i have a lizard on the back side of my left wrist and since i got it i have had 4 surgeries on my left wrist two scars on the top and two on the bottom going up my palm the sad part is 4 different surgeries and my wrist is still the same and i am left handed great huh? i am gonna wait a year since i had the last surgery in august for carpal tunnel which did not work?? and get a extension done to the lizard i get some wierd looks from people they think i tried to cut my wrist or something lol dee Posted by YourEyesCanBeSoCruel (Member # 7480) on :

You could always do Henna tattoos as well. Those have really beautiful designs and they last for over a week every tyme. Just stay away from black Henna, my friend does it at a Reflexology place and she told me that the black ink (all Henna ink is made with walnuts by the way) can be poisonous. I don't know if any places sell the black but if they do DO NOT get it!
Henna just takes a couple of hours to set then you wipe the 'crusties' away and it's really fun to do. Espically when it's with friends and you do your own designs!
I took a kit to school and my play practices and I did probably over 50 tattoos with one bottle of ink!

I went to a Relexologist before, and she put tea tree oil on my feet...and I had a horrible allergic reaction to that stuff. It was awful. It was itchy...and I couldn't get it to go away. It felt like my feet were on fire...and it doesn't wipe off...it gets down in your skin. I have never attempted to do that again.

I went to school with a guy who wrote this AMAZING sci-fi story based around something like that. Except his main character was framed and the tattoos were things like their whole pinky finger tattooed purple meant a child molester and things like that. He had the different finger in the certain colour meant what their crime was.
I think that's a FANTASTIC idea honestly.
(Side note on the BLACK Henna: If anyone trys to use or wants to use that ink, they are definately the brightest crayon in the box, they probably are dull and have the wrapper torn off. The regular brown Henna isn't bad but I can understand not wanting an allergic reaction.)
