My best friend just had her braces off. She and I got them almost at the same time. I was 39 and she was 40 when she got hers...she had to have hers on a year longer than me. She just got hers off last week. I just talked to her tonight...she said getting them removed was horribly painful...she said it was extremely traumatic, she said she was crying...and it felt like he was ripping her teeth off. She has extremely sensitive teeth. I have to get mine off next wednesday, and now I am a nervous wreck about it...I don't know why if it hurts that bad, why he didn't give her a shot of novacaine. She said they use a drill/sander thing to get all the glue off your teeth-after they yank the brackets off...she said that was the worst, cause it blew cold air on her teeth.
I was wondering who else had braces...and how bad was it. My husband is going to take me, because it is 1 1/2 hour ride ...each way for me to get there...and I don't know what I'll feel like. I think I am going to take pain medicine about 1/2 an hour before I get there.
How bad is it??? Anyone remember??

I got mine on at age 15 and off at age 18. Mine didn't hurt at all (no pain meds here) when they took them off and I've never heard of anyone else's hurting when they took them off so your friend must have extremely sensitive teeth. It feels weird when they are off more than anything else because you've been used to having them for so long. The only time mine bothered me were the first few days after getting them and getting used to eating with them. I remember having to take a pill before getting them that dried my mouth out. Then they put something that look like it came out of a Marilyn Manson video in my mouth to hold my mouth open with the entire time. I had to go back monthly to get my wires changed and tightened sometimes more than that because I played sports and would frequently knock a bracket off or a wire loose. They hurt for about a day after getting new wires each month because they tightened them more and more. If you got past all that, you'll be fine. I wouldn't worry about it.

i was lucky enough to finally get braces when i was 17, just in time for my junior and senior year of high school, and my freshman year of college. nothing helps a shy, introverted guy pick up girls like a set of braces.

I never had them....I probably could have used them when I was younger....I do have a slight overbite, but not that bad where I would get them now. I've always took great care of my teeth and am proud to say that I still have every single one. I never even had a root canal....yet.

ISIS,
I wore braces from 16 1/2 to 18. It doesn't hurt taking them off. Your friend either has very sensitive teeth or the dentist was drunk! Two things:
- When they remove your braces your teeth will feel HUGE to your tongue!
- You will probably get a cavity or two withing the next year
Let us know how you do.

And probably tiny to your husband's. Sorry....I couldn't resist.

Marcia Brady got the guy when she had her braces. Well at least when she wasn't high on something.
You have had to read the latest news on her recently about her past addictions to get the last part.

Yeah I heard some juicy info on her and Greg Brady......

knowing marcia brady was having sex for drugs makes me want her that much more. i didn't think i could be more attracted to her than i already was.
unfortunately for me, i never got the girl. and i totally blame the braces.

ISIS:
I had braces when I was in junior high school. And it was indeed painful.
But to make matters even worse...Not only did I have braces (just the upper teeth), but I also had a REALLY embarrasing wire-rim metal ring that attached to the front of my braces and held back around my head. The metal wire thing looked like one of those old-fashioned circular UHF-TV antennas!
Here is a picture from wikipedia.org that shows what it looks like:
I hope you never have to wear these!

Yeah Steven-that looks like Farmer Ted's head gear.
I went to get fitted for my retainer yesterday...they told me it wouldn't be so bad.
I only have a few days to go.
I have a friend who told me that getting braces off is worse than child birth-I want to know how he knows that...since he never did either one.
Posted by MotleyRulz (Member # 3598) on :
I find that hard to believe. You must have friends who are pranking you or want to intentionally scare you......
Posted by ISIS (Member # 1780) on :
Maybe so.
Posted by MotleyRulz (Member # 3598) on :
The retainer thing isn't so bad once ya get used to it. I'm thinking I had to wear mine all the time (except for when I ate) for a year and then maybe for a year only at night. Mine gagged me at first. Just remember to clean it lol....
Posted by ISIS (Member # 1780) on :
My retainer is suppose to be a wire that goes under the back of my teeth, and it stays there for 6 years or so. I am not sure how I am going to like it. It makes flossing your teeth a pain, but that's already a pain now with braces.
Posted by MotleyRulz (Member # 3598) on :
My orthodontist recommended a water pic while I had my braces since flossing was near to impossible. It actually worked pretty good. My retainer was detachable and the wire ran across the front......

Devolution here,
I had mine from the 7th grade to the 9th grade.
Terrible years.
We are DEVO

My wisdom teeth came in years later and now my bottom teeth are kind of crooked again... Bummer.

Tomorrow is the day. I have to leave early, drive 1 1/2 hours to the orthodontist...they said it would take about 45 minutes. Then I am headed to see my brother...so I am hoping that since I have alot of driving to do, that I can stand it, if it is painful. I am excited about getting them off. I am making chocolate covered apples tomorrow night...some friends are coming to help me....incase I am in pain...but I think I can handle it. If you all don't hear from me for days...it's cause I spazed out and had a traumatic experience at the orthodontist.

I am back, and it didn't hurt 1 bit....I almost ripped the arms off the chair from the grip I had on it...but other than that...it was a breeze. I feel like someone took my teeth and gave me a set of false teeth...it feels so weird.
Posted by jdocster (Member # 5752) on :
When you brush them now, they will feel like they are 6 inches long... Don't they feel huge now?
Posted by MotleyRulz (Member # 3598) on :
I told ya......
Posted by ISIS (Member # 1780) on :
Yep my teeth feel huge...they don't feel right...like if I could actually know what ivory felt like...that's what my teeth feel like...they are so smooth, and feel like they were buffed and polished, and they feel connected...not like individual...it is so weird.
Here's my new smile:

Thanks. It costs almost as much as my first car did....so I am going to try and get alot of mileage out of it.

Then there is me...super crazy girl who always wanted braces. My dentist says my teeth are perfect. To me when I look at them they look crooked, and funny shaped. I have nightmares that my teeth fall out. I know crazy!
I am obsessed though. Brush like 5 times a day, I go to the dentist once every other month for a cleaning form them...I have a huge fear of losing my teeth!
Posted by NowhereGirl (Member # 465) on :
wow isis, your teeth came out great. how come you didn't get the braces when you were younger?
i've been taking my daughter to the dentist a lot lately, i was so scared she would need braces, but her teeth have been straightening themselves out, thank goodness.
Posted by ISIS (Member # 1780) on :
My parents could never afford braces for us...and my momsays she never thought I needed them anyway...but I always wanted straight teeth, and I figured...I can afford to do it now...both me and my son had braces at the same time-he has a year to go though...My best friend just got hers off the week before me, and she's 42...so she'll be coming tomorrow for my Halloween party...and we can eat anything we want now. I was already eating a bunch of carrots earlier. I couldn't bite in to a whole carrot before. I was obsessed with brushing my teeth when I had braces....plus getting food stuck in them was no fun. But, it was really a breeze, and I am so glad that I did it.
I was nervous that by the time I ever got around to getting braces that I would need false teeth...but I know someone in the Garden Club with me that has braces and she's in her 70's, so I guess there never is such a thing for being too old for anything.
