I totally forgot to ask last night when and if our local theater was getting "Nights of Rodanthe"- I probably have to wait for it on DVD. Bummer. I love going to the movies. It is like taking a little mini vacation to me.
Last night when we saw Eagle Eye...they had a Kid Rock video playing for the previews ...for a song for the National Guard...I thought it was a preview for a movie...but it was really an elaborate video. The song was called "The Warrior". I hated it...but I kept thinking AGAIN...what is the fate for the movies.
They previewed that new movie "The Mysterious Case of Benjamin Button"....that looked really weird. It looks like all the other movies out there like...The Series of Unfortunate Events...Harry Potter...The Narnia movies,The Pirates of the Caribbean movies, The Spiderman movies, they all seem to have the same exact look to them...and even the same background music. And now...everything stars Tilda Swinton...and I don't like anything about her....she's someone who I think is completely over rated.
But....I think theaters are in trouble...there is hardly ever anybody in the movies when we go...and I think how can they stay in business.
Do you guys think that theaters will become a thing of the past and that movies will go straight to DVD at some point?

I think cinemas will keep going for a while yet. There are still plenty of people who go for the experience of watching a film on the big screen. I don't download movies for that reason - if there is something I really want to see, I'd rather watch it on the big screen with digital surround sound and a big bucket of hideously expensive popcorn!
I'm looking forward to seeing the Benjamin Button movie, I'm a big big fan of David Fincher movies.
I don't agree that all the movies today have the same look, but I must admit that even with all the possibilities of the digital world, a lot of th same effects are used. I think that the overall look of a film is still dependant on the imagination of the director, and therefore a Sam Raimi film will have a different look and style from a Tim Burton film or a Fincher film.
I can imagine a world worse than one where everything stars Tilda Swinton haha, imagine if everything starred Pam Anderson !!!
I actually do quite like Tilda Swinton, and I'm glad to see her getting some wider recognition.

Never. Money would still be made but not at the rate of going to the theater combined with DVD rentals/sales. Movie corporations would never let it happen. Check out the profitability of the movies you mentioned. How do you think they afford to pay the stars millions and millions of dollars not to mention the fact that in many instances stars get a percentage of the box office receipts........

i don't think theaters will be in trouble. there are lots of people who love the experience of simply going to the show. i don't download movies either. i dislike that actually. i don't do netflix or those kinds of things. because (call me nostalgic).. i love taking my kid on fridays to the video store.. and letting her pick our her movies. i remember how excited i was when my parents would take me to rent vhs videos for the weekend. it was something to look forward to.
and i will always be a movie theater go-er. i think it's nice tradition, and gets me out of the house. i've even gone by myself at times, if i want to see a movie that no one else cares about. next movie i want to see is nick and norah's infinite playlist.

I go to the movies with my daughter and her friends about 3 times a year. About once a year I go to a Horror movie with my best friend.
We went to see BEVERLY HILLS CHIHUAHUA the other day. I dont know why so many people are bagging on it - it was a very cute kids movie (Key thing to remember here is that it IS a kids movie!)or maybe Im just partial cuz I HAVE a chihuahua!)
I used to think video, computers and pay per view would eventually put movie thetaers out of business but I think as long as teenagers go on dates there will be movie theaters - I mean, where else are they gonna go til they are old enough to hit bars and motels? hahaha.

Well...I just know from how many people that I talk to all the time...and they will say that it has been years and years since they even went to a movie. I know on here everyone loves movies...but I don't see many people talking about movies anymore. I know our local theater is doing terrible.
I don't think movies are a very profitable business...except if they do merchandising with them...because look at the actors salaries and the budgets for those movies I mentioned ...when it is all said and done, and every person gets paid...how much profit do you think they really make?
Posted by Sam 'The Made Man' Hain (Member # 3150) on :
I think one of the biggest problems is that movies are released to DVD just a couple months after they leave the theatre not to mention on pay per view or being able to rent them soon after they're gone.
Back in the 80s sometimes you had to wait a few years for a movie to be released to VHS.
Why should a family of four go to the theatre nowdays pay $10 each a ticket plus spend about $10 each for soda and popcorn. Then add in the cost of gas to get there. When you can buy the movie for $15 and order in pizza for $20 just a couple months later.
I still feel that overall movies are very profitable when you add their domestic & foreign ticket sales to their DVD rentals and DVD sales.

Haven't been to a theater since the 90's... I hate it! I can barely stand to watch movies with other people in the room, let alone a packed theater full of morons.

why do people pay 400 dollars for a cell phone? why do people pay 2,000 - 3,000 dollars for a huge flat screen tv? THAT'S silly to me. no offense to anyone. i do both.. watch dvds and order in. or.. go out as a family and have fun. wow, i don't know people who don't go to the movies. everyone i know or talk to loves going to the show and go often.

i never go to the movies unless there is something i really feel i must see on a big screen. the last movie my wife and i went to was star wars episode 3. although to be fair, there have been a few movies since i would like to have seen but between money being tight and having a 4yr old and a 16 month old it's tough to get out. my parents and my inlaws share babysitting duties for us and we feel awkward asking them to do it again on a weekend when they've already done it all week.
but mostly it's because i'm insanely anti-social and don't really like people. before we had kids my wife and i would go to some art house theaters or we would go to the earliest matinee showing of a movie to avoid crowds. i remember when my wife and i went to go see the movie "the secret lives of dentists" at this cozy little art theater and we were, by far, the youngest people in the theater. they must have emptied out one of the retirement homes that day.
but now i just have to make do watching movies on my 40" LCD and surround sound system.

I have met a ton of people over the past 5 years on the Rewind, and I have found there to be alot of people on here who have social anxiety problems, and don't like people...so every time someone says that...it does not shock me any more.
But, I have always been a pretty social person. I get to the point that I get fed up with people. Even going to concerts...you see people drunk and acting like fools, it gets on your nerves. People act like that everywhere..people have kicked us in the back of our seat in the movies, and I get sick of people who have gas and just let it rip all through the movies...those are huge draw backs to me for wanting to go out to the theaters. But, I still like to leave my home.
To me...I remember having fun in high school on dates...and the theaters were always packed.
I had a younger couple stay here last Monday night, and I told them that they could pick a movie to watch...I have like 1200 movies or more...and you guys know most of them...and I have a friend who gives me every current movie out there...plus people give me Blockbuster giftcards all the time, so I have tons of current movies (alot of them I have never watched)...but I get them anyway for guests to see...and that couple said they couldn't find a movie worth watching. That totally crushed me...not that I thought they thought I had bad taste in movies....because I have every top movie ever made...but because they didn't want to watch any movie at all.
I hear that all the time...that people never go to the movies. Yeah it's expensive. But...so is going to places like the Olive Garden and Applebee's. I really think that going to restaurants to eat...has taken over going to the movies. Because what else do people do for recreation? Where do people go on dates? Almost every date I ever went on, we went out to eat and then to a movie. Or we rented a movie at the video store, and got pizza and got some friends to double with, and we'd watch a movie at someone's house.
I don't understand people spending $4,000 on a TV either...because there's nothing on TV to watch. The only thing you'd do with it, would be watch movies on it. That probably is taking away from going out, but we are all becoming more and more anti social because it's too easy to stay home and not face people anymore.

My son said that he read that the movie industry will be dead by 2020...that everything will go to videogames.
They are making more movies to look like videogames, and videogames to look like movies, and they are going to meet in the middle.
He said that the reason for them saying that, is because it is cheaper to buy a video game , and you own that for life...than it is to pay for a family of 4 to go to the movies, so that is what people are spending their money on now.
Posted by MotleyRulz (Member # 3598) on :
There's plenty to watch on tv if your open to new things not to mention the fact that tons of old shows are still shown on many channels. Also you may insult some sports or video game enthusiasts who go all out on their home theaters. Some folks may not understand why you spend so much on holiday decorations but they know you enjoy it so they don't question it. Also the statement of it being cheaper to buy a video game assumes your talking about a family of 4. What about families of 2 or 3 or singles going out together?
P.S. Where did that article come from that said the movie industry will be dead by 2020? National Enquirer? I guess it's possible if "Giant Elvis Impersonating Dinosaur Swallows Hollywood Whole."
Posted by ISIS (Member # 1780) on :
Motley would you knock it off...I mean my gosh...I am just saying general information that was on this subject...you don't have to take every single thing I say, and disect it to that degree, and then say I am insulting sports people or video game people, I am not even mentioning them...and I am not the only one who said that was stupid...Ronnie did too, but you didn't jump all over her about. Knock it off.
I never said it about the videogame thing...it was an article my son read...so go tell whoever wrote it...that they should have included all those other statistics of families...I am not the one who said that.

Posted by MotleyRulz (Member # 3598) on :
Generally, folks who dish out alot for a tv are one or both (sports/video games). You said you didn't understand why someone would pay 4K for a tv. I was simply saying someone else may not understand why you dish out a certain amount of money on something you like. You tend to make generalized, biased comments without thinking or comments with no basis and then back into a corner when questioned..........

yet you're the only one here who has a tendency to complain about people and society in general

Weren't you the one who said Eddie Money was drunk at the autograph table and was being a goof?
To me...I remember having fun in high school on dates...and the theaters were always packed.
I'm sure that high school kids have fun on their dates nowdays too. Also keep in mind that most movie complexes have more screens now then they did back in the 80s and that most movies are shown more often during the day so that will make movies having less of a chance of being packed for each showing. At least that's the way it is here.
I had a younger couple stay here last Monday night, and I told them that they could pick a movie to watch...I have like 1200 movies or more...and you guys know most of them...and I have a friend who gives me every current movie out there...plus people give me Blockbuster giftcards all the time, so I have tons of current movies (alot of them I have never watched)...but I get them anyway for guests to see...and that couple said they couldn't find a movie worth watching. maybe they weren't in the mood for a movie and wanted to do something else or believe it or not there are people who aren't fans of watching movies
I hear that all the time...that people never go to the movies. Yeah it's expensive. But...so is going to places like the Olive Garden and Applebee's. I really think that going to restaurants to eat...has taken over going to the movies. Because what else do people do for recreation? Where do people go on dates? Or we rented a movie at the video store, and got pizza and got some friends to double with, and we'd watch a movie at someone's house.
dinner and a movie is what a lot of people do here. They might go to a sporting event. Go to the symphony. Go to the theatre and watch a play. Rent movies and order pizza. Just hang out. Go dancing. Go on a bike ride. Go for a walk. Those are all things I did in the 80's on a date and they're all things I've done in my adulthood, and I see a lot of other people do the same things
I don't understand people spending $4,000 on a TV either...because there's nothing on TV to watch. The only thing you'd do with it, would be watch movies on it.
Some people actually like a lot of the current programs along with watching movies on them. Watching sporting events also are much better on a big screen along with playing video games. Why do some people spend $50,000 on a vehicle when a $20,000 vehicle will get you to the same exact place?
That probably is taking away from going out, but we are all becoming more and more anti social because it's too easy to stay home and not face people anymore.
once again you're the only one here who continually bashes people and society

Yeah...Eddie Money was drunk , and none of us were impressed by that. Just cause I met him , and I like his music...doesn't mean that I make ammendments to how I feel about drinking.
I don't know any movie theater that shows movies during the day near me....except on the weekend...in the 80's, we went to matinees constantly-especially around Christmas. I haven't even seen 1 preview yet for a decent Christmas movie coming out.
The people that were here...did act like they wanted to see a movie...they had already been in my hot tub...and they looked through them...but said they couldn't find one...I just thought that was sad...because they were young too-and I am sure there are tons of great movies that they never saw...but they didn't even seem to know any of them anyway.
I am not bashing my society of people...I am talking about society in general. I have heard tons of people on the Rewind say that they are anti social...so I am talking about the people right on here that say that all the time...not me...I am social....I bash the reasons why people are becoming anti social....it hasn't happened to me, but I see it happening to many many people...and that is what bothers me. There are too many people walking around with social anxiety disorders. But..I am not one of them. The way that people act...sure adds to it.
Posted by NowhereGirl (Member # 465) on :
you make a good point sam. when i talked about the expensive tv's and phones, i just mean that it's a ridiculous amount of money to spend on those particular things (IMO),.. which most people buy anyway, but for someone who enjoys going to the movies and spending money on tickets, food and gas to get there... it doesn't seem like a waste of money to me. take the iphone for example. that phone can do all kinds of different things. but consumers buy that stuff up because people want to have top of the line technology. and to each their own, as they say. but you're right.. some people spend money on things and love doing it, though others may not see any point in it whatsoever.
everyone's different.

one more thing.. there is a difference between people who have social anxiety disorder and people who are just anti-social... that is how i see it.
i'm not a social person who's all over the place and talks to everyone and anyone. but that's because i just don't know how sometimes. it's not fun, believe me.
it's unfortunate but it shouldn't bother someone else.
what's your opinion NOMS?

Havent seen it myself...but I hate KID ROCK anyway so Im not missin' much.

I go to the movies every couple of months. When I was growing up I would go all of the time. Sometimes three times a week. I really want to see Eagle Eye at the local IMAX theater. IMAX is way cool!

Isis is right in a way, in that the industry is undergoing a massive change; as big a change as...well, the 80s. George Lucas spoke about this at length a while back: Peoples viewing habits are changing, their attitudes and awareness levels are changing, the technology is changing e.g. many movie theatres didn't have the capabilities to screen 'Journey to the centre of the earth' in 3D this year, a lot of places couldn't show 'Speed Racer' hence the Wachowski brothers use of NAC Hi-Motion DigiPrime Lenses on the Phantom HD Cameras didn't quite convey the intended effect. Once the superhero craze subsides, Hollywood will struggle to find a genre as popular (its the same through the ages) and that coupled with international desires to revive their own nation's film industry, will mean Hollywood will have to evolve to suit the modern audience mindset. On the plus side, it may mean another revolution in independent film and a more internationalist mainstream movie scene addressing pertinent issues in a non U.S.-centric manner. Globalisation, as predicted, is taking an almighty beating in the ring of ideas and ideology; its not quite down & out, but the refs getting ready to count. The cinema will struggle, the industry faces a challenge.
