Everybody has music they like that they keep in their "shame" box. up until a few years ago people didn't know I liked BARRY MANILOW and OLIVIA NEWTON JOHN but now I just let it all hang out! I have no shame...and I have no "shame box".
So lets list some songs we love that most of our peers would roll their eyes at:
My daughter - who is 9 - loves Born Free by ANDY WILLIAMS
I love Afternoon Delight by STARLAND VOCAL BAND

Carpenters Tom Jones

I like that Moonlight song by Starbuck plus some ELO.

I can't even believe that I am going to admit to some of these. It really is sad, but I believe in honesty:
Daniel Bedingfield - If You're Not The One Snow - Lady With The Red Dress Rockwell - Somebody's Watching Me The Beach Boys - Kokomo New Edition - Cool It Now & Mr. Telephone Man Haddaway - What Is Love
I'll stop here.
Posted by mamamiasweetpeaches (Member # 1715) on :
so far I like all the songs and artists you guys mentioned (okay, not KOKOMO...Hahaha) ...BUT...I have never heard If You're Not The One and Lady With The Red Dress. I will have to dowload them and see how "bad" they are.

Yep, I can Mmm Bop right along with Hanson if I'm in the car alone when it comes on. Of course, if anyone's with me I immediately turn it.

I love songs by Peter Paul and Mary...like:
Lemon Tree and
Puff the Magic Dragon.
I don't know if those are dorky or not.
I love The Carpenters...some might say they were dorky.
I always loved the goofy songs like...
Muddah Fuddah, My Ding a-ling, Spider and Snakes, Junk Food Junkie....
so it depends on what you think is dorky..
I love "The Streak" by Ray Stevens.

I also love most stuff by American and Australian Idols too.

Oh yeah, I'm a big Carpenters fan. Remember when VH1 classic used to have that 8 track flashback show? They played the Carpenters all the time...I loved it! Of course, if someone came in the room I turned it.

i didn't think i had something to offer here, but i'll admit there a lot of bee gee's songs i like.
i like certain songs from artists without actually liking the artist but i can't think of many now. trying to think of stuff my mother listened to when i was a kid that bring back good memories like carol king, anne murray, carly simon, simon and garfunkel, james taylor, america etc.
Posted by mamamiasweetpeaches (Member # 1715) on :
I dont think people realize before the big Disco Wave THE BEEGEES had some good rock songs (Okay, well not ROCK like METALLICA or anything - but ....'70s Rock......) I have their 2 disc GREATEST HITS set and it rocks. Im amazed at how many good songs there on there.
I like their Disco stuff too actually.

yeah, i was referring to their disco stuff. i knew they were a rock band too earlier on. weren't they supposed to be the next beatles?

Forgive Me...I've made greatest hits compilations of:
Barry Manilow (Love Mandy) Neil Diamond Air Supply Don Williams???? Ronnie Milsap???? The Beach Boys and The BEE GEES
To redeem my coolness.....my favorite bands are:The Cure, U2, REM, The Killers, and...The Indigo Girls......well maybe the last one doesn't have the redeeming quality I thought. But I also drink beers, love hockey (Go OILERS GO!) and Football (DA BEARS!)....and I've watched First Blood about 20 times! Grrrrr! And...I'm a happily married man and rarely comment on other girls....but....holy smokes....I went to see Death Race last night....holy Natalie Martinez!!!!! Now...how cool and macho am I?
Posted by mamamiasweetpeaches (Member # 1715) on :
wow you topped your list with two of my faves: Barry Manilow and Neil Diamond (seen both in concert- well, not TOGETHER - how awesome would THAT be?????)
I dont know who Don Williams is? I have to look into that. All the other ones are cool though (Im not hugely into THE BEACH BOYS, but a few songs I like).
Posted by kevdugp73 (Member # 5978) on :
Don Williams is a country singer prominant in the 80's....my Mom and Dad played his albums all through my childhood...so brings back great memories. If you check out his Greatest Hits, I'm sure you'll recognize a song or two. I don't like country music...though certainly like some songs....but I love a lot of the late 70's early 80's country songs...for the same reason as noted above...childhood memories. I actually really like Neil Diamond and Barry Manilow as well...though a closet listener....meaning, I wouldn't play their CDs at a party...well wait now...yes I would...but only after about 9 beers...and I would sing along to get a laugh out of my friends....."Oh Mandy...you came and you gave without taking......"
Posted by mamamiasweetpeaches (Member # 1715) on :
Oh now , come on: WHo hasnt had a drunken sing-alomg to Sweet Caroline?
"SO GOOD! SO GOOD! SO GOOD! SO GOOD!"

Ha ha, I wouldn't have expected that from me, either. I think it reminds me of college and the "good old days."
Have to confess, I like Air Supply too.
Posted by 80'sRocked (Member # 6979) on :
First of all, there's nothing to be ashamed of with ABBA or Air Supply. I like both as well.
Bandit, that is the first time I ever heard Cheri Cheri Lady by Modern Talking. I quite enjoyed that.
Posted by 80'sRocked (Member # 6979) on :
quote:Originally posted by mamamiasweetpeaches: BUT...I have never heard If You're Not The One and Lady With The Red Dress.
I totally loved Hanson 'cause I grew up with them. I had them on tape. I loved that tape, and I was devastated when I lost the lyrics so I couldn't sing along.
I'll admit I like the cover of "All By Myself" by Celine Dion. And now I'm sad I did. Now I'M all by myself!
Posted by Stitch Groover (Member # 2895) on :
I'm suprised people haven't heard of Daniel Bedingfield's "If you're not the one", and I'm even more suprised that it's considered dorky. I love the song, I get quite emotional every time I hear it. I remember a couple years back, Ace Young sang it on Idol, he was terrible as always, but he didn't even know the name of the song!
Posted by journey (Member # 7316) on :
Air Supply.
Posted by mamamiasweetpeaches (Member # 1715) on :
I remember the kid who lived across the street from mine had AIR SUPPLYS GREATEST HITS and would play it CONSTANTLY (I was more into DURAN DURAN and PAT BENATAR around this time period) and for YEARS after I would say "I hate AIR SUPPLY!" ....but if you don't have to listen to back-to-back AIR SUPPLY for hours on end they are very enjoyable in small doses. I like AIR SUPPLY but I dont want to listen to ALL their songs in one sitting!
ACE OF BASE is another band that I guess some people would be ashamed to admit they like, but I love them! That first album with I saw The Sign and Don't Turn Around is great- every song a winner! (I guess they were a '90s version of ABBA in a way).

"SO GOOD! SO GOOD! SO GOOD! SO GOOD!"
That reminds me of a scene in the movie Beautiful Girls. That is a GREAT song to sing along with. Almost everything by Neil Diamond is ok in my book too.
I love Barry Manilow. Really I do. Not that I play his music every day. But I have this tradition to listen to it while I'm... painting. I think he's a fantastic songwriter. 'Mandy' is a masterpiece and so is 'Could It Be Magic'.
Other guilty pleasures are:
'Don't Give Up on Us' by David Soul. (Yup, the blonde guy from Starsky and Hutch)
'Moon River' by Andy Williams
'Adia' by Sarah McLachlan
...

i'll defintely start a hockey thread when the season starts. it's always good to bust chops(in a very friendly way of course) during the year.

I love alot of Neil Diamond's stuff too...
You know who sings one of the dorkiest songs I have ever heard is Wayne Newton's Duncashane.
I have never understood his popularity...because I have never known any hit by him other than that...and I swear even though I like the whole scene with it in Ferris Bueller...I still hate the song.
Posted by Sam 'The Made Man' Hain (Member # 3150) on :
besides Danke Schoen which charted at #13 in 1963 Wayne Newton had hits with Red Roses For a Blue Lady #23 in 1965, Daddy Don't You Walk So Fast #4 in 1972, and Years #35 in 1980

Anyone?? Anyone???
Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :
I was humming something today I hadn't heard in while. Tony Orlando's Tie a yellow ribbon around the old oak tree. Only in the 70's!
Another song I don't mind(maybe I should?) is by this woman(???) who sang One Tin Soldier.

It sounds Vaguely familiar...did Tammy Wynette sing it....?? I must have thought a woman sang that song.
Posted by ISIS (Member # 1780) on :
That song reminded me a little of this song...
This song my mom use to play for me all the time...then we'd both bawl...maybe that's dorky...now I listen to it, and think of my son, and I bawl some more over him:
I never really got the Wayne Newton thing myself. The man is filthy rich from singin in Vegas. If I was in Vegas and got free tickets....I don't think I could force myself to go. No offense, of course, to those who love him......Wayne Newton lovers!
Posted by mamamiasweetpeaches (Member # 1715) on :
I dont love Wayne Newton either. The very thought of him cracks me up but the only song I know is Danke Schoen (which i probably spelled wrong). I much rather see Engelbert Humperdink :" So I sing you to sleep afteeeeeeeer the loving!" or "Pleeease release me, let me goooooo!" Hahaha
the other day i walked into the room and my husband was watching a TOM JONES concert on TV! I don't know what it is about TOM JONES, everybody (myself included ) loves him. My daughter is in 5th grade and the boy who lives across the street from us who is in her class sings "What's New, Pussycat?" The other day a girl in her class called her and when she answered the phone the girl said "What's new, Pussycat?" so its like a running joke with them. I'm like "How do they even KNOW that song?" Now truthfully Whats New Pussycat is far from my fave by him...I like Leave Your Hat On, She's A Lady and It's Not Unusual. I would love to see TOM JONES play live!
