looking forward to this upcoming werewolf flick - late phases about a blind war veteran who is put into an old folks home where a few of the previous elderly residents have died from mysterious animal attacks.
this one is sending out vibes of the awesome silver bullet(1985) and bad moon(1996).

The last modern horror I viewed was a Brit film or at least it took place there. The name escapes me but the plot centered around a gent who was a clown that worked birthday parties and was inadvertently killed at a party. he then returns and raises all hell.
I regret not being able to have that ninety minutes of my life back.

two home invasion style horror/thriller's both released within 6-7 months of each other,both with the same name,both with similar plots - teenage girl home alone confronted by a masked pyscho or psycho's on the night before halloween(mischief night) etc.etc.
noell coet as the blind emily in mischief night (2013).
the differences between the 2 from what i've gathered from watching both trailers and reading the various online reviews is that in mischief night 2013 the young girl under threat is both blind and badly asthmatic where as in the 2014 version the young lady may well be slightly unbalanced and was at one time suicidal.
also the 2014 movie - mischief night that they have the twist of the young girl befriending her psycho intruder and eventually turning the tables on him.
this is only guess work i must mention as i've not actually seen either film yet.
i could be way off the mark!

It's not very often that I really like a modern horror. But surprisingly last year I enjoyed a few in the cinema. There was Oculus, Horns, As Above So Below, Annabelle and Deliver Us From Evil. I really enjoyed Sinister the other year too.

I liked Sinister a lot. Oculus was well made and acted but wasn't very suspensful and didn't do anything for me. Horns started out well and fell apart by the third act. The re-imaging of The Town That Dreaded Sundown started out even better with the coolest meta-plot ever but then, sadly, degenerated into just a generic slasher film.

After.Life I thought was another "near miss," Helen. I saw part of it again here recently, and I do appreciate that it tries very hard to do something different in the genre, but overall, I guess I wasn't buying the concept, ambiguous as it was. The director is someone to watch, however.
JR, I loved Under the Skin, although as you alluded to, it's one of those things that you will either really like or absolutely despise; there's no middle ground whatsoever. I thought that it was an unforgettable film up in the lofty realm of The Man Who Fell to Earth and the films of David Lynch. It really, truly creeped me out, and I think that Scarlett Johansson was spectacularly good. That said, I can still understand why so many people hate it. my wife said she can recollect it quite well,she gave it the thumbs up.
2009 this came out,i'm starting to think either a lot of these modern horrors are actually none to memorable,or it's either that or i'm suffering from short term memory loss!

it takes a lot for me not to watch a movie all the way through to its very end ,no matter how bad it is,but i lasted about 25 minutes with this low budget,actually let me rephrase that no budget 2014 horror - hazard jack.
total crud,there's no other word for it!
pleased this was something i recorded of the horror channel and not a rental,i think the rental fee alone would of made me cry.

anyone out there eagerly awaiting another entry in the amityville series?
amityville - the awakening (2015) starring bella thorne (blended),jennifer jason leigh and kurtwood smith.
this has already been put back from its original release date and as of now has been put on hold,so it's not off to the most promising of starts.
i'll probably give it a watch when it does finally turn up,the fact it's got the great kurtwood smith as well as jennifer jason leigh in the cast I'd imagine that it can't be all bad.
my favourite from the series so far is amityville 2 - the possesion closely followed by the (1979)original,amityville 3 was watchable but dissapointing when compared with what had come before.
Not seen much in the way of the many direct to video sequels that followed.
Did see the 2005 remake though which I thought was OK.

Just got this one a couple weeks ago. I'm a huge horror fan and gotta say this made my top 10 horror dvd releases of 2014. It's a low budget movie that doesn't feel low budget at all. Plus how can you go wrong with Debbie Rochon and Tiffany Shepis in the same movie. Anyone else see this one?

i enjoyed as above so below,i thought it was pretty decent overall,liked the setting of the paris catacombs,very eerie!
wouldn't say the movie featured anything overly scary or anything but there was one very effective jump scare,it was one of those scenes where you guessed what was going to happen but it still made you jump right out of your skin anyway.
the movie also moves at a fair click especially once they reach the underground tunnels and i won't go into to much detail but i loved the final shots where they flipped everything on its head.
yeah not bad at all,i'd give it a 7/10.

here's a new upcoming one featuring a killer grizzly bear which was originally titled red machine but has now been renamed grizzly in north america.

it's got a pretty decent cast including billy bob thorton,thomas jane,scott glenn,james marsden and not forgetting bart the bear.
shot on a budget of $10 million and directed by saw 5 director david hackl i reckon it looks pretty good fun!
it's scheduled for a us release in may 2015,not sure about here in the u.k but i'll probably give it a try when it does eventually reach these shores!

i just watched this on the uk more movies channel and no matter how hard i tried I just couldn't stick it out.
I watched just over the 30 minute mark and it was the first murder that killed it (so to speak) for me,it was so ridiculous.
A Teenage Boy is casually walking along the road just to be run over by a tractor and plough which has crept up on him and it's not until the tractor is basically on top of him that he actually realizes it's there.
OK the tractor in question has no engine and is meant to be possessed,controlled by some teenage devil kid (who thinks up this rubbish) but the plough which is being pulled is scraping along the road with sparks flying every where and he's still oblivious to it all.
By this time I had reached the half hour mark and that was more than enough torture for me.
The plot was about some new kid in high school who seems to possess demonic powers who Vinnie jone's daughter takes a shine to,with Christian slater lurking in the background as a priest who spy's on them from behind the bushes.
From what I watched of it I'd rate it
Entertainment value - 2/10.
Comedy value - 11/10.

Watched The Conjuring (2013) the other day and loved it! Nighttime, headphones, atmospheric supernatural horror film set in the 70s = works! Nothing new here really if you´ve seen few of these before but everything´s done so well. Especially Lili Taylor is amazing and the kids can act too.

i liked the conjuring atomik,i purchased the blu ray,i think it's way above average for the modern horror catergory.
though i don't hold it in quite as high regard as the conjuring you might like oculus atomik,i thought that was pretty good.
it's quite well made actually!
i know they've done a prequel of sorts to the conjuring - annabelle (2014) but from what i gather it falls pretty far short of it's (2013) predecessor.

as modern low budget direct to home video horrors go i thought this was pretty decent overall,i purchased this on blu ray some time back on the cheap and have watched it once or twice in the past but decided to grab it of my shelf for another viewing.
kip pardue.
starring kip pardue,breckin meyer (freddy's dead),vinessa shaw and in a non martaial arts role scott adkins (ninja) and filmed on location in both new york and sofia,bulgaria (obviously for budget reasons) this new york set cannibal subway horror is a rather entertaining watch.
it's basically about kip pardue out on his drunken stag night with a group of friends in new york city who when getting the subway back home get into an altercation with one of 2 other female passengers onboard.
The argument gets quite heated and this leads to the group including the 2 ladies into getting off the train not only at the wrong stop but also when they are not supposed to,they force the doors while the train is temporarily stopped for a points change.
what none of them realise is not only is that section of the subway closed off to the public (no exits of any sort) but that it also infested with cannibalistic killers!
even though stag night is not with out its faults,i thought there was a bit too much of the shaky cam at times - mostly during the attack scenes,i'd say overall in general there's very little to complain about here.
scott adkins.
of the positives i thought the gore effects were rather well done for what was obviously shot on a relatively low budget and the music score was really cool and had a real retro feel to it,the cast were also very likeable.
the music score as couple of reviewers on another site pointed out and i agree with does have a bit of the john carpenter's about it!
This has received some pretty stinky reviews over the time but I've got to say I really did rather enjoy it and when compared to some of the other low budget modern horror ficks I've seen of late - camp dread,the way of the wicked etc. It is far superior.
i'd give it a 7.5/10 and for fans of low budget modern horror I feel you could do a lot,lot worse than this!

good to see robert englund back on the screen again,not sure what this new horror - fear clinic from the director of the gory 2009 slasher - laid to rest - robert hall is like.
it star's robert englund alongside brad dourif's daughter fiona (curse of chucky) and i'm not familiar with the band but i believe i read that corey parker who also stars is a member of the metal band slipknot.
i did see robert englund in a low budget british shot horror - the last showing about 6 months back and that was pretty entertaining all things considered.

I've not seen it johnny but I've heard very mixed things about it,the video vacuum web site had it amongst there worst of the year.
So approach with caution!
That's one film johnny by the director lucky McKee that I thought was really good and that was red starring Brian cox,it's not a horror,more of a thriller .
That's well worth a watch.

this irish horror movie - the canal which was filmed in and around dublin has been getting some pretty rave reviews.
saw this first advertised nearly a year ago so it's taking its time coming out to home video.

What happened to Joe Dante? I saw his last film, the long-delayed The Hole, and while no masterpiece, it was a cool little film giving hope that Dante was going to make a comeback. This thing is straight to video-on-demand in the U.S. in a couple of months. And I agree, it doesn't really look like it has anything going on.

Maybe I am a little too forgiving, Helen, but for what was intended to be a kids' film, The Hole is pretty well made and subversive. In any event, it's so much better than Dante's previous effort, Trapped Ashes, the little-seen anthology film. Have you seen it? Despite having stories directed by Dante, Sean Cunningham, Ken Russell, and Monte Hellman, it is one of the most listless Amicus wannabes that I have ever seen. Dante directed the wrap-around sequences about the haunted movie studio (groan) starring Henry Gibson as a tour guide. A friend of mine who saw it at the Toronto International Film Festival way back in 2006 (It wasn't released in the U.S. until 2008) had the best possible two-word review of it: "Trapped a**es." ROFL

Wrong turn is pretty decent Bernie,part 2 I didn't dislike either but it wasn't up to the original.
It was part 3 that killed it for me with some of the worse CGI effects and amateurish acting I can remember.
Unlike johnny I've not been brave enough to venture past part 3,I can't believe they've already got to number 6.
There must be an audience out there for these then,Surely it's not just johnny on his own who is watching them.

watched the 2014 horror flick - late phases earlier on tonight and enjoyed it immensely,great acting from the lead nick damici as the bind vietnam veteran who moves into a retirement home where the elderly residents are being picked off every full moon by you guessed it - a werewolf.
anyone going into this thinking it's going to be 90 minutes of all out werewolf action will probably be slightly dissapointed,it's got a deliberate slow paced build up and it pays dividends in my oppinion as it makes for quite a tense finale.
the werewolf effects are mostly pratical and to be honest you can easily tell at times it's someone in a suit but i much prefer it this way to an over abundance of cgi.
the wolfs in general though do look pretty nifty and have a much altered appearance from what we have seen before,i can't think of another werewolf movie at this present moment that i can really compare them to,they certainly look different.
what a great actor - nick damici
this was a blind buy for me,i picked it up on dvd for just under 5 pounds and i definitely consider it money well spent,i've not long got through watching it actually and i'm now looking forward to watching it again.
so that gives you some idea of how much i enjoyed it.
imagine having these stood in the rear of your car it would give the following driver nightmares
yeah atomik i reckon they've more or less nailed it with the look,they look pretty sinister and like you say that's how they should really look.

i thought this was pretty decent overall - clown from 2014 starring peter stormare,laura allen,eli roth and andy powers who gives a really good performance as kent a loving husband and father who turns into a child eating demonic clown after putting on a possesed clown outfit he finds in one of the properties that he has currently up on the market(he's a property salesman).
this has some pretty inventive moments throughout as well as its fair share of grim and gory scenes plus some rather dark natured themes of the possesed clown stalking and preying on the local towns youngsters,the legend has it that the possesed wearer of the suit must eat 5 children before he or she is released from the grip of the demon (so basically once the clown suit is worn you become part of it and it can not be removed until the curse is broken).
i just looked up its running time which was 100 minutes and it seemed to fly by,it's definitely entertaining enough i'd say for most people to overlook the odd flaw it has here and there,at about the hour mark though i did notice a bit of a shift in tone,it got dafter all of a sudden but not to the point where it went completely overboard.
also i thought the finale was pretty well staged,it takes place in a kids play centre of all places which then led onto a short but tense final showdown at the families home.
so overall i'd say definitely worth checking out for all horror lovers out there and if you've got a bit of a fear towards clowns in general then this one will probably really get under your skin.

i wonder what this is going to be like,new brit werewolf film - howl about a group of passengers on a late night train journey on the night of a full moon that are attacked by a pack of werewolfs.

Over the past month I've watched a couple of modern horrors -
I watched ouija a 2014 horror which was nothing over spectacular but as pg-13 horrors go none to bad either.
Definitely not as fun as say the 80s witchboard films but if you happen to chance upon it on say satellite TV or perhaps a cheap rental I'd say yeah check it out.
I've seen a lot worse!
Also the other week watched this low budget 2008 horror - the echo about an ex convict just out of the slammer who goes to stay in his recently deceased mother's old apartment and keeps hearing sounds of voices within the walls and witnessing a violent domestic argument between his neighbours next door.
When he finally intervenes all is not what it seems.
Pretty good low budget horror which for the most part moves at a bit of a snail's pace but never looses your interest and perks up for the last half hour or so and makes for a pretty creepy and satisfying finale.
Not overly gory or anything but there's probably just about enough here to warrant its r rating or 15 certificate as it is rated here in the UK,a few jump scares,a little blood etc you know the score
Actually tell a lie thinking about it there is a couple of scenes that are a bit cringy in this one,both concerning mishaps with fingers which I remember made me grimace so yeah I would say it deserves an r rating.
So again like ouija it's nothing that's going to blow you away but the same again if you happen to chance upon on it on TV or a chance of a rental you could do a lot worse.
I'd probably rate ouija a 6.5/10 And the echo a 7/10.

Exorcism, cool and rainy New York scenery, nice effects and pretty solid dialog. Erica Bana and Edgar Ramirez were great and Olivia Munn veery pretty Bruckheimer still delivers!

the trailer doesn't do a whole lot for me and it definitely looks pretty bonkers but this low budget 2015 horror - a christmas horror story which features a cameo from william shatner is picking up some seriously good reviews -
A few modern horrors that I've seen of late that get my recommendation - Charlie's farm an Aussie outback horror with a pretty cool cast that despite a slow build up (50 mins - 1hr before big old Charlie goes on his rampage) is never boring and the final half hour or so is relentless.
Some really cool kills in this one and the 6 foot 11 Nathan Jones (mad Max fury road) makes for a very intimidating killer in Charlie!
I saw this a little while back actually but it's only from 2014 - the last showing starring Robert England as a multiplex film projectionist who when unwittingly made redundant from his job snaps and starts murdering some of his fellow cinema employees before deciding to make a horror movie of his very own with which he is given a perfect opportunity when the cinema screens a late night showing of "the hills have eyes 2 (1984) of all films and he traps a courting couple inside where he proceeds to stalk them while filming it all on his hand held cam.
Despite the slightly mixed reviews this one received I quite enjoyed this one and it was great to see the legendary Robert England back in a more major role as he gets quite a bit of screentime here as opposed to some of his smaller cameo's in other horrors of late!
Filmed so I believe at the vue in Cheshire oaks so I'd imagine that must have been pretty cool for local residents especially if anyone got to see Freddy Krueger in the flesh!
Also of note - the town that dreaded sundown (2014) a pretty brutal sequel/remake of the 1976 original with a really great atmosphere it would make it a cool one for Halloween if you've not yet checked it out it and it is well worth doing so -
And the fantasy horror horns (2013) which I thought was really good fun and don't be put off if your not a big fan of Daniel Radcliffe as he's nothing like he was in the harry potter franchise that's for sure.
As directed by Alexandre aja of hills have eyes remake and piranha 3d remake it's a lot more adult in content!
Again well worth a watch.

I love Halloween themed movies and I think this looks like it could be a lot of fun featuring 10 Halloween tales of horror from an assortment of directors including lucky mckee and featuring cameo's from John Landis,Lin shaye,Adrienne barbeau,Mick garris,John savage,Caroline Williams,barbara crampton,stuart gordon,robert rusler and Joe Dante.
I liked trick r treat from a few years back and this sort of gives off a similar vibe!
For those interested, there's a UK dvd release planned for next month.

i wonder if this will live up to director michael dougherty's earlier horror hit - trick r treat,i found that to be really enjoyable!
opens in the uk on the 4th december 2015 the same day as it opens in the us where as some countries get it a week later unless your france who get to check it out first on november 25th 2015.
it's another demonic possesion film but this is getting quite a bit of positive feedback and that is 2014's - the taking of deborah logan which came out sometime ago stateside - 21st october 2014 but has yet to show up on these (u.k) shores.
The Final Girls trailer was awesome, thanks for the info Johnny. Scandi blu-ray release november 9th.

I watched the recently released Scream Factory blu-ray of The Editor (2014).. but didn't like it.
Advertised as an hommage to the Italian giallo, it turned out to be more of a parody.. or even worse : mockery !
Nah, i don't like that. Sure there are some stylish visual touches and the music is pretty decent too, but to be honest, i'd rather prefer to watch the worst of the real giallo movies than to spend 95 minutes watching how one of my favorite genres is being ridiculed.

Damn, i wanted this to be a modern masterpiece. But it just isn´t. Lots of good ideas in this horror comedy but there´s too much family drama here and the fact that it´s a PG -13 film just doesn´t help. It´s was going to be a R -rated New Line release but then Sony got it and they wanted to make it softer...
The acting is pretty solid and the film definitely has it´s moments but how can you spoof 80s slasher genre and not have any boobs or gory on-screen kills? You can´t. There´s also two pretty ugly cgi scenes in the film. The soundtrack is good, you can hear classic tunes from Kim Carnes, Toni Basil, Bananarama, Warrant and Wang Chung in the film. Overall, it is a pretty decent film and might get better second time around with lower expectations but right now it feels like The Final Girls could and should have been so much more than it is.

Very impressed with this 2014 found footage horror from first time director David Jung,not sure what budget it was put together on but the effects and the performances especially from Shane Johnson as the possessed Michael king are first rate and it's got a really creepy vibe at times that is totally missing from the latest (what i'd imagine are bigger budgeted) paranormal activity theatrical releases!
Not normally a fan of these found footage pov horrors but this has none of that annoying shaky cam that can often be found in earlier efforts and though it definitely has a few faults - over loud jump scares for one I had to turn my speakers way down as I thought they were going to blow up at one point - because he's possessed Michael has a habit of screaming in an incredibly high pitched voice - there's definitely more than enough here to keep most horror fans entertained for its ridiculously short run time of 83 minutes!
7.5/10 - great little possession flick with plenty of atmosphere.

Last friday was friday the 13th so i watched Jason X (2001) for the first time. Pretty good production values in this one but the excitement level is zero and i didn´t like the characters nor the cast. Once again they kill the cutest girl first (Kristi Angus) so for the rest of the film i rooted for the android Kay-Em (Lisa Ryder). She kicked Jason´s butt pretty nicely Few decent ideas here but really guys, Jason in space I´ll watch parts 1-6 a hundred times before i revisit this one.

The series really started to go downhill for me from part 8 onwards,not sure between - Jason takes Manhattan,Jason goes to hell and Jason x which I think is the worse.
I watched the remake at the theatres and though it's not really comparable to the original parts one through to seven i definitely preferred it to what came after in that series!

Crazy horror comedy starring elijah wood as a school teacher fending off hordes of flesh eating zombie school children who have become infected after eating contaminated chicken nuggets.
Really daft,a bit too much so in places this still manages to be quite a fun horror comedy with some solid laughs throughout and a few real gross out moments especially the opening credits which reminded me a bit of the 1980's horror - slaughterhouse which featured the opening titles sequence with the pigs being slaughtered where as here its chickens instead!

This was pretty decent,in fact I'd say it was rather good its a 2015 haunted house horror starring female horror icon Barbara crampton of reanimator fame and its about a grieving couple who have just lost there son in a car accident who move into a desolate country house in a very wintry and cold looking new York state.
But Little do they know that the previous residents who were wronged by the local townsfolk still haunt the place and that as legend goes these vengeful spirits rise from the cellar every 30 years demanding a human sacrifice - and the bad news is that current 30 years is now up!
Cool little horror flick this that builds up slowly with the odd bump in the night moment before really letting loose in the last 20 minutes or so which features some really outrageous gore effects!
Very atmospheric and definitely worthy of a watch,it's another good new horror and one thing I will say about this year - 2015 - is that in general from the horrors that I've watched is that i definitely think they seem to be raising there game a bit!

The relatively young cast did ok, although i would´ve liked to see more hysteria in their actions. Writer/director David Robert Mitchell definitely has some skill. I also liked the early 80s style minimalistic synth soundtrack very much.

Yeah I didn't dislike - it follows,the music score definitely added greatly to the atmosphere,I like the scenes near the beginning where she's just mellowing out in her pool with the cool synth score playing in the background,the scene with that big creepy guy was pretty freaky!

The Human Centipede 2 - I rewatched the first film recently and still believe that it is an utterly bonkers, but well made horror/black comedy. I don't give a **** what anyone thinks. This however was a for the most part boring and then vile for the sake of vile piece of trash. The disgust you get from the first film is mainly just from your own head and the descriptions the Doctor gives rather than what you actually see on the screen. Unlike this. Less is definitely more here. There was a couple of humourous moments and the black and white was nice. That's about as much positivity that I can conjure up for this.

I just suffered through the third installment, and it was one of the worst movie experiences that I've had in a long time. It was just an in-your-face, obvious attempt to be smug and self-indulgent, especially when director Tom Six shows up as himself, and the other cast members describe him as a genius. And then there's Dieter Lazer who screams every line that he has at the top of his lungs. It is the worst, most exhausting performance of all time.
The first two installments had their moments--and despite what people say, Six is not an untalented filmmaker--but this one was utterly worthless in every way.

This guy was so great in - star 80,the coca cola kid and runaway train and I know he's been doing direct to video movies now for quite sometime but while at first some of them were still half way decent nowadays the majority of them are just horrendous.
You can easily tell he's a long way past caring,like you said crash he just takes his money and runs!

This was none too bad the 2012 horror/thriller - the possession about a divorced father who when caring for his 2 daughters one weekend decides to stop at a yard sale which they happen to spot whilst driving by and one of the items that they purchase is an antique wooden box which happens to have Hebrew inscriptions on the top and the sides,unbeknownst to them the Hebrew words are actually spelling out a warning as to never open the box as it contains a very evil spirit!
This was pretty good I thought and for a pg - 13 (15 rating here in the uk) rated horror it was nowhere near as tame as what I had feared,there's some good effects work here as well along with some strong performances and a fairly gripping plot line - I liked it 7/10.

Normally I'm pretty lucky with my blind buys as the majority of them i feel do turn out to be worth a purchase, but this my latest one the horror - death call aka old 37 has to one of my absolute worst pick ups yet!
It's just so poorly put together - from the attrocious acting,the ridiculous plot line and some really shoddy CGI effects it totally sucks and I can see why the director had his name removed from the credits and opted for the Alan smithee pseudonym.
I'd give it about a 2/10 and that's being generous!
I just got to hope now that some poor sucker buys it off me on eBay.

What a disappointment this one turned out to be - the dyatlov pass incident aka devil's pass from 2013,it was rather decent for the majority of its running time and then sadly just went into complete free fall for the last 15 minutes or so with a rushed and completely bonkers finale!
Great location shooting in the the snowy outbacks of Russia and i thought the cast were also good,plus for the most part it was well handled by director renny Harlin it was just the ending for me which totally undone all the promise and hard work that had gone before it!
It's watchable but could have been so much more! 5/10.

Lame remake to the classic 1982 original,before I went into this one I said to myself to try to not make to many comparisons to the original otherwise chances are your going to absolutely hate it,well I got a few minutes in and I started to make comparisons and I was thinking this scene wasn't done as well as the original, that scene wasn't done as well as the original and in all truth i found it impossible not to compare the two films!
Well how do they compare? They don't really as there not even in the same league and as i expected the 1982 original completely blows this 2015 reincarnation right out of the water, when watching this I said to my wife how spoilt we were for great movies whilst growing up and it made me feel a bit sorry for the youth of today and i know that there's no way that I'd wanna swap growing up in the 70s/80s to being a child/teen-ager of today!
Very Poor - 3/10.

This 2009 supernatural horror thriller was pretty enjoyable,the plot is a bit by the numbers - a couple move into a new apartment building and start seeing ghostly figures but it's all done well enough to forgive the many plot clichés and lead actress Teri Polo (mystery date) gives quite a decent performance here!
Also stars the terrific Michael Ironside who turns up in an extended cameo as an investigating police officer and an actress I'm not over familiar with Elaine Hendrix (above) who gives a really good performance here as the seriously bitchy man-eater vanessa,the rest of the cast is mostly made up of unknowns and apart from the odd performance acquit themselves rather well!
Where as most horrors I've watched of late have tended to fall apart in the final few minutes I didn't dislike the ending to this one,it does have a daft twist in the tale and things do get more than a little bit silly but it's a fun final 15 - 20 minutes or so and makes for quite a satisfying finale!
Overall it's far from perfect but it's not a bad little horror and when compared to the last horror movie that I watched the very mediocre poltergeist remake I would say that it's quite an improvement over that!
One last thing i've noticed is this movie goes under quite a few different titles,in the UK I've seen it as - Haunting at the beacon and also under the title of - The wrong apartment,other territories it goes under the titles of - The beacon and - Sinister awakening.

I've read some pretty good reviews for Nina forever johnny,a site I sometimes vist - The horror club gave a very positive write up on it and you can tell from the plot summary,trailer and poster art that it's going to be something a bit different from the norm!
I watched last night -
A prequel set before the haunting of the Lambert family that reveals how gifted psychic Elise Rainier reluctantly agrees to use her ability to contact the dead in order to help a teenage girl who has been targeted by a dangerous supernatural entity. - from imdb.
A fairly solid entry in the Insidious horror series which features decent jump scares along with some pretty good performances from the likeable cast,actually Dermot Mulroney turns up here as the possessed girls father and it's been an absolute age since I've watched him in anything!
One thing that i did find really annoying about this movie was the difference in volume levels between the dialogue and The surround effects,I had to crank my amp right up to hear what felt like whispered speech to then have a jump scare moment where it felt like my speakers were literally about to take off,it got that bad in the end that I decided to turn my amp off and just listened to it through the TV.
I'm not a really big fan of this series i'd say it's more my wife than me but I do feel that this seems to be moving along a lot stronger than say something like the paranormal activity movies which by the 3rd part was really starting to bug me,it's not that bad though I'm sure that if they keep persisting in knocking out one of these year after year then this series also will probably be run into the ground at some point!

Seen The Witch last night. With all the descriptions people were giving I really thought this was gonna be right up my alley. And parts were, but as a whole it was slightly above average. It looked really pretty, had some good moments, the acting was fine and the final 15 minutes were gripping. I just feel so disappointed because this could of been made really tense and emotional but alas it was not. I also found it lacking in atmosphere. Worth one watch I guess.

10 Cloverfield Lane was a pleasure in old-school suspense craftsmanship and a very intense film. I don't think that there are two more underrated thespians than John Goodman and Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and both are in top form here. (There's already Oscar buzz for Goodman, and it's well deserved.) The film is fairly polarizing, however, for the last 15 minutes or so. Either you enjoy where it goes, as I did, or you think that it just runs off the rails as bat sh** crazy.

I watched this the other night the 2015 M. Night Shyamalan horror thriller The Visit and overall I thought that it was fairly decent with a good mixture of mild jump scares,gross out moments mostly dealing with incontinence and there's also the occasional good laugh here and there.
The wintry setting was a bonus as well!
Anyone else caught this one yet and if so what were your thoughts?
I didn't mind The Visit. Felt more of a black comedy to me. The lad was pretty funny.
I went to see The Boy which was entertaining junk with a very funny ending.

Watched these three titles over the past couple of weeks
First up was The Barber from 2014 which was more of a thriller than a horror which stars Scott Glenn as a suspected serial killer Eugene Van Wingerdt who runs his own little small town barber's shop and unbeknownst to him is being investigated by the son of a former police officer who took his own life many years earlier after becoming obsessed with trying to put Van Wingert (Scott Glenn) away behind bars but due to a lack of evidence he ended up walking free,at the time Glenn's character was suspected of killing many women in and around the Chicago area by burying them in shallow graves whist they were still alive.
Very tense thriller this with a cracking performance from Scott Glenn that also has a really great twist in the tale.
For serial killer thriller fans i'd say it's well worth checking out!
Next up I watched The Veil from 2016 which was directed by Phil Joanou ( Three O'Clock High,State Of Grace) and stars Jessica Alba,Lily Rabe and Thomas Jane.
This was another one that I found to be pretty enjoyable it's about a religious cult who commit a mass suicide upon the instruction of there leader Jim Jacobs as played in a fun and very OTT fashion by Thomas Jane,20 something years later Jessica Alba gets up a team including the only original survivor (Lily Rabe) to return to the scene of the tragedy and to document the events that took place there only for some very strange happenings to occur upon there arrival!
Phil Joanou who is quite an accomplished director gives this film a very stylish look to it,what they've done is drained most of the color from the image and though at times it does make for a slightly dull viewing experience I'd say that overall i think it mostly works as it certainly suits the material on offer here and also helps give the film that necessary creepy vibe!
Cool creepy stuff with a standout wacky performance from Thomas Jane who I was only talking about the other day here on the rewind as this guy seems to pop up in everything nowadays though he is certainly good value for money here!
I'll do my little take on The Pack a bit later on!

Due for release October 6th in the US not sure about release dates elsewhere but I'm really looking forward to the latest entry in the Phantasm series - Phantasm:Ravager.
I am both excited and terrified as Phantasm is my fave horror series so I don't wanna see it ruined, eek!
I'm going to see a horror in the pictures tomorrow but won't know what it is until it starts All they say is it hasn't been in cinemas yet and is a 15. Wish me luck!

This looks like fun and it's getting some really ace advance reviews,it's more a thriller than anything else and that is The Good Neighbor aka The Waiting starring the great James Caan.
I thought that at first but no it can't be cos that's out in that cinema tomorrow anyway lol. I'm just hoping it isn't a sequel to something I haven't seen!

Joe Begos' second feature-length film, The Mind's Eye, will be released on blu-ray next month (US only).
I really liked the aggressive, old-school horror of Begos' Almost Human (2013), so i'm looking forward to this one. Deeply influenced by Cronenberg's Scanners, The Mind's Eye is decribed as 'the best Scanners sequel we never got'.
So the mystery film was Blair Witch. I don't want to be too harsh because I could see they really, really tried. The characters were really likeable and I appreciated them trying to build on the whole creepy house part of the original. But it just wasn't very effective at the end of the day. Points for effort tho.

I'm not a fan of the shaky cam horrors but I think As Above So Below was a superior entry and in general quite well done
Helen you ever seen this one from a few years ago The Possession Of Michael King as that is a great little low budget horror shot in a POV style and contains some really good jump scares!

I went to see Don't Breathe last night and on the walk home talking about it I just found myself liking it less and less. The plus side is I wasn't bored so that's good and the Cujo moments were great. But I dunno, they were trying to throw all this tension around but given the fact I have no concern whatsoever for the wellbeing of people who have just broken into somebodies home it just didn't work. I also actively hated how they threw in that stupid twist with the old guy and did that scene at the girl burglars house and the whole lame ladybird crap. It all felt so contrived to give sympathy to her when she was just vile.

Although I haven't seen the film itself, the trailer for Don't Breathe left me with a bad taste: We are rooting for morally reprehensible criminals. That is pretty tough to pull off. (Perhaps Escape from New York and The Silent Partner are among the best examples of how to pull that plot trope off where you actually care for a criminal protagonist.)
So once again, we have a well-received modern horror film that really doesn't amount to anything.

This new Horror Thriller from The Collector/The Collection director Marcus Dunstan is picking up mostly positive reviews,a quick glance at the trailer and it does look like more of the same even starring one of the main leads from those movies in Josh Stewart.
Overall though I think it looks OK and probably will check it out at some point!
Hated the Collector films so will be avoiding that one!

I liked The Collector a lot more than its sequel which at times got a bit to ridiculous especially the opening disco scene carnage.
The trouble with a lot of modern horror is that they've long run out of good ideas and so just recycle the same plots over and over,a bit like the new Anthony Hopkins thriller Solace https://youtu.be/Lq86v60c_Jo - which I watched the other day which don't get me wrong i thought was OK but you could tell that the Director was heavily influenced by David Cronenberg's The Dead Zone.

Dead Snow 2 ; Red vs Dead (2014)
All political correctness is thrown out the window when the Nazi zombies return in this entertaining splatter-fest sequel. Heads get pulverized, intestines are used as strangulation tools, and best of all, babies get blown up (quite literally).
Oh, and there's also some very creative use of Bonnie Tyler's Total Eclipse Of The Heart that adds to the fun !
Comedy horror has always been a bit of hit-and-miss, but Dead Snow 2 is actually among the better ones.

The Neon Demon (2016)
Haunting, visually stunning, but otherwise empty (perhaps deliberately so), avant-garde countess Bathory type-of-story, filled with unlikable, egocentric, and arrogant people without any real background, purpose or goal, and devoid of emotions, proclaiming 'beauty isn't everything.. it's the only thing'.
Filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn paints an aggressively unflattering portrait of the fashion- and modeling industry. Perhaps fairly accurate.. who knows.
The one person i found the most interesting was the creepy motel keeper (played by Keanu Reeves), ironically the only character in the movie that has nothing to do with the fashion industry, although it is suggested he preys on (very) young aspiring models new in town. Unfortunately Keanu's screen time is limited to about 5 minutes or so.

Watched The Conjuring 2 (2016)

The first Conjuring was great and i really liked this sequel too. This time The Warrens (excellent Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) have to solve the so called Enfield case which took place in 1977. Haunting atmosphere, awesome cast, cool setting and nice special effects. I hope they will make yet another film with the same crew.

Yeah I saw The Conjuring 2 during the week on rental and I was quite entertained by it,I dug the UK setting and also i liked how it opened with the Amityville case.
Seemed a lot more in your face this time around with very little left to the imagination and as parts 2 in modern horror series go it's a pretty strong outing and I'm sure they could easily stretch to another entry or two!
I think I've heard of Baskin Helen is that a Turkish made horror film or am I getting it mixed up with something else?

The Devil Inside (2012)
Micro-budget movie tells a tale of demonic possession and exorcism presented as a faux documentary.
The faux documentary / found footage formula has become a bit tiresome in recent years, but it must be said, the possession / exorcism scenes are quite intense and unsettling.
Supposedly based on a true story (which turned out to be a hoax), The Devil Inside turned its $1.000.000 budget into a $50.000.000 profit at the box office, but left many viewers confused with its abrupt ending.
Picked up a couple of cheap horror DVD's - The Editor from 2014 which is a throwback to the 70s Italian Giallo films of Argento,Fulci etc. Not seen it yet and have read mixed reviews but at the price i got if for (under 5 UK Pounds) i thought it worth the gamble!
Also picked up - Beyond The Gates starring The Reanimator's Barbara Crampton in a small role this i have seen and i really dug it,shot obviously on a meagre budget this film opens in 1992 and has two brothers sorting out there father's closed down video store after there Pop mysteriously vanished some months prior,while sifting through the thousands of VHS they come across a Video board game called 'Beyond The Gates' which they take home and proceed to play not realising that by doing so that they are opening a gateway to another dimension!
Slow to build but always entertaining with a solid cast and some great practical effects this was a fun little watch with my only irritation being that it was too darn short at only 1 hr 19 minutes.
I have heard that they are doing a sequel so i look forward to seeing in which direction they decide to take that!

Nah, i don't like that. Sure there are some stylish visual touches and the music is pretty decent too, but to be honest, i'd rather prefer to watch the worst of the real giallo movies than to spend 95 minutes watching how one of my favorite genres is being ridiculed.
Just looking back on this thread and i see your review Johnny for the Editor which I've not long picked up,oh dear is it really that bad?
I'll let you know what i think of it as I'm going to check it out sometime over the next few days!

No, i didn't like it. It's not a bad movie though. The Editor looks and sounds fine.. It's just i didn't like the way they treated the giallo genre. They emphasized the peculiarities of the genre to ludricous effect.
This is just one man's opinion, of course.
There's another recent giallo homage (which i still haven't seen) that looks very promising :
Francesca (2015)
I know there's a 3-disc (blu-ray + dvd + cd) edition released in the US, so at some point i'd like to pick it up.
That Francesca is a new one on me and i must say it looks really well done,looks more like a faithful homage to the giallo genre than something (The Editor) that ridicules it beyond belief!
I have watched a good chunk of The Editor when i got in from work Johnny but i had to turn it off as my 10 year old son came downstairs and i didn't think it was quite appropriate viewing for him but what I've seen of it so far i have mostly enjoyed!
Seriously goofy at times though,overly so actually with it at times feeling like your watching the Naked Gun of slasher movies but there's some cool music in there and it does feel quite stylish in places plus there's a whole stack of nudity on display and O.T.T gore effects!
So,so far so good but i do think that the guys 'n' gals at Astron 6 could have certainly done with reigning in the wackiness a bit!
Saying that just checked up on its budget and for 130,000 Canadian it's actually pretty amazing!
