Great band and song.

There is a song (and video) by LADYHAWKE called Dusk Til Dawn that is Totally '80s. (You can find it on YOU TUBE).

The Darkness totally sounds 80s. The first time I heard it, I thought it was an old 80s song that I had never heard of!
Posted by NowhereGirl (Member # 465) on :
oh man i love the darkness. their song 'love is only a feeling' was my favorite by them.
Posted by NowhereGirl (Member # 465) on :
i know it's been said before, but i felt the killers - mr. brightside & smile like you mean it, were totally 80s-sounding songs
Posted by mamamiasweetpeaches (Member # 1715) on :
Yeah, I loved THE KILLERS first album. very '80s sounding. And FRANZ FERDINAND's first album too.
Posted by MotleyRulz (Member # 3598) on :
I was gonna say The Killers song "When You Were Young." Pretty much anything by The Killers really since they use alot of synths. "An Honest Mistake" by The Bravery sounds like it could have came out of the 80s too.......
I love The Killers. They sound very 80s, but some guy on yahoo entertainment ripped them a few weeks ago, saying they rip off U2 too much. I still like them though!
Posted by mamamiasweetpeaches (Member # 1715) on :
U2???? Really??? I dont see it. They much more reminded me of PSYCHADELIC FURS or something like that.
I hated SAMS TOWN. I wish they had stayed with the sound from their first album.
Posted by mamamiasweetpeaches (Member # 1715) on :
oooh...just thought of another good one - SHE WANTS REVENGE.
I know everybody is going to say they hate this song but has anybody heard Shake It by METRO STATION? My daughter likes that song and I hate to admit its growing on me - and the only reason is that it sounds pretty '80s-ish.
Posted by StevenHW (Member # 509) on :
Some Coldplay songs have that U2 feel.
Nelly Furtado's "Promiscuous Girl" (not sure if that is the exact title) has that 80's synth-dance-pop sound.
Posted by mamamiasweetpeaches (Member # 1715) on :
Now the COLDPLAY - U2 connection I can definately see.
I remember awhile back a magazine (ROLLING STONE I think) called COLDPLAY "The New U2" and all these U2 fans got ****ed off. I cant blame them. COLDPLAY is good...but they ain't U2!
Posted by NowhereGirl (Member # 465) on :
how do coldplay and U2 compare? i hate coldplay's music.
i'm telling you - listen to VHS OR BETA .. their debut album is very 80s sounding -
That's right....they're still around and rockin' just as good as in the 80's. This tune is from their 2008 CD - Phoenix.
Posted by Devolution (Member # 1731) on :
Devolution here,
The Killers and U2 should never be put in the same sentence together except is that sentence is "Man, the Killers sound nothing like U2."
The Killers are awesome, Sam's Town the song is so great you will probably want to run people over if you are driving. The best driving song since "kickstart my heart". The beginning is incredible.
We are DEVO

The only song I thought the Killers were trying hard to be like U2 was the beginning of On my list. Hiring Joshua Tree photographer Antonin Corbjin as your video director for All the things we've done was a sign as well.
There has been tons of groups/songs this decade that have been 80's influenced. in indie/alternative rock there was a period where the influnces were basically Gang of Four/Joy Division/Cure/XTC,. Gang of Four-Bloc Party, Futureheads, Rapture, Franz Ferdinand, Radio 4,Maximo Park. Joy Division-Interpol, Editors, Cure/XTC-Rapture, Hot hot heat Others like The Faint, Late of the Pier, MGMT remind me of the past.
I find Do it by Nelly Furtado has a real like 87 Madonna vibe. This band called White Rose Movement really is going for the 80's sound and look.
The Click Five- Just The Girl and Catch Your Wave

Richie, did you mean love like winter by AFI? that song definitely has an 80's sound to it. in fact, there are a couple of songs from the december underground album that sound a bit 80's. good choice.

I have a question. Why is it now cool to dress sort of 80's, listen to 80's music, and produce music that sounds like 80's music? Back in the 90's, all of the "hipster" kids thought that we were so lame growing up in the 80's. I remember going to buy Motley Crue concert tickets in 1999,(this was before you could buy them around here online) and the kid working at National Record Mart was disgusting- he had dirty clothes on and dreadlocks (Lord knows what grows in there). He ripped me dirty and laughed at me when I told him I needed to buy 4 tix to Motley Crue. Wonder what he is doing now- probably still hangin' at the mall with all of his dirty-hippie-wanna-be friends from the 90's!

My theory is that it's always a decade ahead. The 70's were supposed to be terrible for clothes etc, but in the 90's and early 00's me, my boyfriend and all my friends wore flares, garish floral shirts etc....we were totally 70's throwbacks....but then the 80's fashion started to be everywhere....now I notice high top trainers etc are coming back.....so that's my theory.

Yeah, that is a great song. The single was no.1 for two weeks about a year ago in the Finnish charts.
Strum und Drang´s second album Rock´n´roll Children went straight to no.2 in the Finnish album chart this week.

The second Northern Kings album is out now!
Once again there´s some great cover versions here:
01. Training Montage (Vince DiCola; “Rocky IV” soundtrack) 02. Wanted Dead Or Alive (BON JOVI) 03. Kiss From A Rose (SEAL) 04. A View To A Kill (DURAN DURAN) 05. Nothing Compares 2 U (SINEAD O’CONNOR) 06. My Way (FRANK SINATRA) 07. Strangelove (DEPECHE MODE) 08. Take On Me (A-HA) 09. I Should Be So Lucky (KYLIE MINOGUE) 10. Killer (ADAMSKI feat. SEAL) 11. Royal Bliss Z02 Bullet For My Valentine Rev Theory
There's a lot of good rock music out there right now you just have to look for it as it doesn't get much radioplay on mainstream stations. Thank god I have Music Choice.

Good choice on all Sam. I especially like Black Tide. Black Tide's "Shockwave" has a huge 80s feel to it........
This band, "Shy", was more metal in the 80's and 90's, but in the 00's, they sound more like 80's AOR. Reminds me of bands like Journey now. The whole album, "Unfinished Business", totally blew me away.

I also think that the band Clear Static sounds very 80s-ish, especially "Dancing with Strangers", which I cant find a decent link to.

Shake it by Metro Station and Fireflies by Owl City
Everytime I here either of these on the radio, I feel I am back in the 80s.

For some reason, I have always felt that the 2003 song "Hey Ya!" by Outkast sounds like it could've been released in the latter half of the 80's.

Room 5 featuring Oliver Cheatham, "Make Luv."
I think that could have come from the 80's.

My daughter likes on by LA ROUX called Bulletproof. If you didnt know any better youd swear it was 1985 and you were listening to ALISHA.

Ah... the old 'originality by theft' which is dependent on being too young to remember the original stuff.
If I ever hear modern songs that sound 80's, I just want to listen to original 80's songs. At least back in the day they were doing something 'new', rather than rehashing something else.
Rant rant grumble grumble.

Good call, Atomik, I really like HURTS. The handful of songs they've released so far are pretty good. Very much leaning towards late 80s slick synth stylings. I'm looking forward to the full debut album.
Another good synthpop group is Mirrors. This song, Into The Heart, sounds similar to Echo and The Bunnymen to me.

"Rush" is number 1 on the Finnish album chart right now. Pretty good tune from this Finnish artist.
