My first car was a Chevy Monza but my second car was a 1984 silver Mazda RX-7 that I bought in 1988 for $8,000 with only 20,000 miles on it.

Hey JCWBobC,

I had a Chevy Monza too! It's engine seized on me while I was driving. No warning, just locked up!

Perhaps a Tempo. No need to overdo it.

Ferrari Testarossa (in white, of course! [Wink] )... Way to go Crocket & Tubbs [Smile]

Sadly, the reality for me in the 80s was a ford escort (XR3 for those UK visitors -- yea, yeah I know that everyone had one and they were seriously uncool! [Wink] )

I really wanted a Toyota MR2. Those things were sweet.

In reality my family owned a Pinto, then a Ford Taurus, and of course the obligatory Green Datsun station wagon, with brown wood tone siding.

I loved my Dad's gold Granada haha [Wink]

Sadly living in the UK the cars available in 80's where certainly less exotic than the sort of motors you would see in American movies and to be honest its only now looking back I tend to be more interested in what they where, its easy for anyone to pick a Trans Am or Corvette etc but for me there is nothing more 80's than a giant station wagon with imitation wood panelling down the side and a fold down tailgate, this car is the unsung hero of many an 80's flick!

I take that back as National Lampoons Vacation gives the humble 80's station wagon its 15 minutes of fame!

MM

P.S. Why don't they put wood effect panelling on the side of cars anymore, in-fact just out of interest who was the last manufacturer to do it and what was the model, or maybe they still do!

off topic a bit but speaking of wood paneling, am I the only one left that LOVES that fake wood tone paneling inside houses? I think because it reminds me of the late 70s and early 80's but I still love it. Anyone know where I can find it?

Well I drove an 84 Pontiac Fiero, and also an 88 Honda CRX Civic. Both were excellent cars back then.

Posted by Phanstar (Member # 4235) on :

man I LOVED my CRX. Ive owned two and actually have been thinking about saving up and tracking down another one. What a great car.

although I believe only the 87 and before models were considered civics. I think 88 and 89 or was it 89 and 90, they were considered their own model. Whichever year it was they changed the body style..

The cars I owned in the 80's were:
'72 Ford Pinto
'73 Camaro
'87 Mercury Lynx (aka an Escort) My first (and only) new car.

My dream car was the Monte Carlo SS or the Fiero.

In the 70's, my parents had a Ford station wagon, white color, but with the fake "wood" panels to the side. It didn't bother me a bit.

That kind of paneling on the side were usually featured in station wagons, and not sedans. I guess one of the selling points in those days, was to take the entire family out for some "outdoorsy" adventure, such as a picnic, a fishing/hunting trip, a camping trip, etc. [Smile]

But, to my knowledge, nobody makes that size of station wagon anymore. They're replaced by mini-vans and SUV's. And, quite frankly, I think a wood side-panel looks awful on them! [Eek!]

Cars I owned in the 80's were a 1966 NOVA and a 1977 Corvette. During the 80's I loved the Dodge Daytona like the one in the Wraith and a Toyota 4X4 like the one in BTTF, Both black.
The dream car would have been a Porsche 911. Still is

are you talking about cars of the 80s or cars that appear in 80's films?

My first car was an '88 Toyota Supra (got it in '97) and I loved it! When I was a kid, my dad drove an '81 Lancia Zagato. It was a black cool convertable. Both ideal cars. www.cardomain.com/ride/3366449/1988-toyota-supra/#33664490001

I use to love those SS Monte Carlo's. The car I owned in the 80s was a Red Chevy Cavalier. Which I loved that car too....had a luggage rack and a cassette tape player. [Smile]

I loved Corvettes and I-ROC Z's, and Z24's.

One of my old boyfriends had a brand new Chevy Baretta in 1988 when they first came out.

Buick and Pontiac owned the decade. I'm not sure why people think the 80's were bad in terms of performance vehicles.

My parents owned a Buick Regal, and my best friend had a Pontiac Sunbird.

Speaking of Pontiacs. Momma had a couple Grand Ams. One was bright red and looking nice. I remember driving around listening to Bullet the blue sky by U2 over and over and over again.
Mike. that Monte is sweet
