I was listening to Night Ranger, and thinking how great the guitar and the drums sound, but also the lead singers had good singing voices. And I was thinking of how many bands made it big in the 80's:
Journey Styx Night Ranger REO Speedwagon Def Leppard Loverboy Van Halen Aerosmith Toto Asia Whitesnake 38 Special The Cars Heart The Police Boston The Go Go's Foreigner Huey Lewis and the News
There's so many...I can't even think of all of them....
Look at how diverse their music was...but they didn't just have 1 song and be broke up...they stayed together for years and some are still together, and they played awesome music, and when was the last time an actual Band came out with a song...that was on the POP charts...there aren't any bands any more.
I was listening to the Flashback 80's on the radio tonight...and they were playing The Cars..and they played "I want your sex" by George Michael...I liked his stuff... alot of solo artists were more like a band sound to me...like:
Bryan Adams Rick Springfield Eddie Money Aldo Nova Prince
I am not sure what you call Hall and Oats, but they were great.
I totally miss "cruising"...especially in the summer...the reason people are so stinking mean any more...is they don't have anything energizing them...that's the problem...all the influences people have around them right now...are negative....I use to feel so energetic when I would get in my car and turn the radio on...I didn't care if I was in a bad mood or sad, or what...I put music on and I was happy. I put the radio on now...and think...gag me with a spoon. I like easy listening music too...
Like James Taylor, Carole King, Carly Simon, Kenny Loggins, music to me just can take you back to places in time that you immediate connect with that song, and I love that about music. Today's stuff just is beyond words.

It would be all too easy to cite dozens of bands who were successful in the 80's who are still going strong today (eg Iron Maiden, Metallica, Slayer, AC/DC, Motley Crue, etc) but I did note Lisa's point about decent pop acts (although she does cite Aerosmith, White Snake and Def Leppard in her list of great 80's bands) and should point out that whilst I can find good music in all decades, one only needs to look at the recent Live 8 lineups to see that there are still many bands that fall into Lisa's criteria that are still doing well today (U2, Madonna, A-Ha,etc to name just a small few) so whilst I agree that yes, there were many great bands in the 80's who you don't hear of any more, there are still quite a few who you do hear from...across most genres as well.
I find it interesting to note that of the 80's bands, with one or two obvious exceptions (like U2 and Madonna)that the 80's bands who are doing the best in the modern world are the metal bands...

As for these only play a few songs and then break up...I blame Pop Idol and The X Factor in aprt for the dross that is released on the general public of late.
Of course, one hit wonders are not a new phenomenon and Lisa would do well to remember the dozens of 80's singles that were released by 80's singers who were never really heard from again...

Oh...there were tons of one hit wonders in the 80's..and alot of other bands that are smaller scale but were good, like:
Quarterflash The Motels Flock of SeaGulls Human League Berlin The Fixx Corey Hart Howard Jones Simple Minds
I forgot Duran Duran
All these groups ...they sound so completely different.
I do agree that Metal Music has lasted longer...but the reason for it to me... is that it fits the way society is today..it is reflected in the way people look, how they dress, how they talk, their behavior, and their attitude.
I listened to some Metal in the 80's...I forgot to mention Bon Jovi too...and they are still making music, even though I haven't heard a song of theirs...that I would run out and buy. I like Poison, Vixen, Lita Ford, Cinderella, Quiet Riot, The Scorpions, Twister Sister and a bunch more....but that wasn't all there was...there was a whole bunch of other music...you had Cyndi Lauper, Tina Turner, Whitney Houston, Elton John, and so many people that were on the same extact music charts at the same time...you don't see that any more.
Plus...look at all the bands that did music for movie soundtracks....movie soundtracks from the 80's were great...look how many people loved the Valley Girl soundtrack...and if you ask alot of people who Josie Cotton was...most people would be Clueless. The soundtrack to Fire with Fire was never even released...but it had awesome music in that movie. The soundtracks to both Breakin movies were really great, and those songs weren't major hits either.
I don't even hear good background music in movies any more...I watched the movie "No Mercy" last night with Richard Gere...and I actually liked the instramental background music they used in that movie, I think it fit the movie really well.
Music and Movies go together like peanutbutter and jelly....you have to have a good mix of both for a movie to work...in my opinion.
That's why movies that picked top songs that were on the charts...were smart for doing that.
I just know...it seemed like the best music came from the 80's....and the type of music hasn't lasted, I have not heard any song even by some of the same people...that sounds like it could have been made in the 80's, but yet they are using all the 80's and some 70's songs in commercials ads, and almost every radio station has an all 80's show they do, and some stations are devoted totally to nothing but the 80's, so the 80's music will always be good.

The few new songs off the red white and crue cd sound like the 80s to me. and didnt duran duran do a summer tour? that seems to be proof that they r still going pretty strongly...

I heard Duran Duran's song...it was ok...but to make one song now every 10 years instead of every few months isn't really proof...Duran Duran was pounding out one hit after another...my favorite songs of theirs were "Union of the Snake" and "Say a Prayer" and "The Reflex".
But from the time they did Hungry like the Wolf...they were continuously on the charts for years...and the songs were awesome...the videos were even cooler, the people in the bands were good looking, and had a great sense of fashion...I mean just think about Duran Duran and what they looked like, how good their music was-every songs music was really different the music in "Say a Prayer'---gives me goosebumps-I love that music..they don't even have to sing in that song... but look at how well they actually sang, that's the thing...there is a combination of stuff you need....and it seems like today's stuff...half of the ingredients are missing.
I like music that I can relate to...that I feel like wow...whoever wrote that song put the words down just for me...I can't believe I forgot Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks...cause so many of their songs I love so much. To me you can't take a song like Edge of Seventeen and turn it in to "Bootylicious"... the only reason that song did so well...honestly is because of the music they used...it sure wasn't for the lyrics. That's the kind of stuff I can't see the progression of...my problem is with new stuff they recycle really great old stuff...and turn it in to garbage...but that is the opposite effect that recycling was meant for....Isn't recycling suppose to be about taking something that was garbage and turning it in to something new and wonderful?
The thing is though that if people are going back and taking ideas from the 80's...copy the style of song....not the music or the lyrics...those songs were already hits...be original and make up your own stuff.

That is exactly what I'm doin'! I take something that is 80's crap and turn it into something beautiful and funky!

Actually I was thinking about Noms and Motley and I was thinking about how they have music still that they like that is new, and "good"...in their minds...now how would you guys like it...if all the bands you love quit making music all at once...and all you had left to listen to was country music?
That is what I am complaining about...all the music I like is gone...I can still hear the stuff I love...and that part I am grateful for...but to never be hearing a new song that you never heard before that you actually like, that's like death.

I know what you mean. I happen to like all kinds of music. There is really no type that I don't like. There may be a few bands I'm not fond of but I like all music.
I have a job as a part-time DJ on the weekends at a Country music station in Milwaukee. We play old stuff and new stuff. It's really fun and I get an opportunity to meet all kinds of people.
I ususally listen to music that fits the mood I'm in at the time. I have too many CD's but I just like so much stuff.

Devolution here,
Old Bands die hard. Duran Duran didn't really crank out hit after hit in the 80's. They had 3 good CD's and that was enough to get them through the Decade. Well spaced and sense of timing. In my opinion if you want people that cranked out a lot of music. I would say "The Beatles" in the 60's, "Elton John" in the 70's, and "Billy Joel" in the 80's. I am NOT saying that these are the best bands of all time. I am saying that the ability to crank out songs and albums is a lot artform. Very few people have an album every year. Most people run the success of an album for as long as they can, then go back to the drawing board.

They cranked out enough songs to have a greatest hits CD...that to me is a major accomplishment. In today's world, if you sing 1 song that is semi ok...then your doing swell...we have really lowered our standards,
I agree about Elton John and Billy Joel...those guys made so many songs...but you barely see them either now...Elton John's around but does kid songs for Disney movies...and I am not sure what happened to Billy Joel...but I always liked him.
Posted by Ali_with_an_i (Member # 27) on :
Yeah but Britney Spears had a greatest hits CD come out! I mean c'mon! She has only been around for a few years and she already has a greatest hits? What's up with that?
I guess the music industry will try and make a buck at any given chance they get. Greedy bums.

Thank you Ali. Box sets and Greatest Hits have lost their prestige. You should be buying a greatest hits because you didn't want to buy 7 albums, not because they put their 2 albums together and put 2 new songs on them.

Elton has a long-running engagement at one of the Las Vegas casinos, though I can't remember which one.
Billy Joel is still active, though he doesn't record or tour as much these days. He hardly needs to! Instead, he recently had a Broadway musical called "Moving Out" based on his old songs.

We listened to all 70's and 80's music on the radio today, on the ride to and from my Dad's which was an hour and a half each way....Does anyone else get the 80's radio station that Kid Kelly does all the 80's music? I love him.
I got to listen to
Rhiannon- Fleetwood Mac One of these Nights-The Eagles Legs- ZZ top Perfect Way- Scritti Politi Delirious-Prince Photograph-Def Leppard
There's a ton of songs from the 60's and 70's that I love too...I love the song....
"I am so in to you"....I don't know who sings it...I can't remember...I am going to look it up.
***I just looked that song up, and that is the chorus...I am so in to you.......
It starts out sings something like...
when you walked in to the room...you had voo doo on your mind... (or something like that...the word voo doo is in it)
and then it does a chorus of.. do do do do do do do...I'm so in to you.....
Does anyone know it???

As with alot of past and current bands, there are breakups, reformations, and makeups. This may be due to creative differences, band member disagreements, etc... Alot of it has to do with ego as well...

There are a "new wave" of bands out right now with an 80s sound to them and they cite many 80s bands as their influences:
The Killers The Bravery Franz Ferdinand The Kaiser Chiefs Scissor Sisters Snow Patrol

Wow!! Thank you Devo! I could not find that song at all anywhere...I want to get it.
I just looked up the lyrics to see if I was close...
So Into You Atlantic Rhythm Section
When you walked into the room There was voodoo in the vibes I was captured by your style But I could not get your eyes Now I stand here helplessly Hoping you'll get into me
I am so into you I can't think of nothing else I am so into you I can't think of nothing else Thinkin' how it's gonna be Whenever I get you next to me It's gonna be good Don't you know From your head to toe Gonna love you all over Over and over Me into you, you into me Me into you
I'm so into you I'm so into you......
When you walked into the room There was voodoo in the vibes I was captured by your style But I could not get your eyes Now I stand here helplessly Hopin' you'll get into me
I am so into you I can't get to nothing else I am so into you, baby I can't get to nothing else, no, no, no Come on baby I'm so into you Love the things you do Listen, baby You're driving me crazy Come on baby I'm so into you Love the things you do
That is a great song, does anyone else know it and like it?

Franz Ferdinand is ok, but the Killers are the most boring band I've ever seen. And their so-called rivalry with The Bravery...has about as much relevance as mentioning Reebok's Dan or Dave campaign from the 1990s. Both bands just ape so much off of New Order: the Bravery listening to Blue Monday while the Killers listened to the Getready album.
Posted by Devolution (Member # 1731) on :
Devolution here,
Ah, I tend to disagree, but you opinion is cool. The Killers just sounded different. They were the first band that sounded like something that people could get into in a while. As for Dan and Dave. Shame that Dan didn't even make the Olympics.

Posted by Illnero (Member # 4286) on :
Yeah, they sound a bit different. When I meant boring, I was lamenting about seeing them live in Atlanta last year. I had a friend tell me that since I like New Order I might like them. I'm watching the whole show and seeing this band on stage, who I think is like a boring opening act when my buddy turns to me and asks if I enjoyed. I say "That was them? That was the band I was supposed to like?" I was distraught.
Although, if you play "Smile Like You Mean It" during the scenes in "Pretty In Pink" where OMD's "If You Leave" plays, it works quite nicely.
Posted by Riptide (Member # 457) on :
The Killers have some catchy tunes, but they are not as good live as their records. The Bravery are the better live band in my opinion. The best of these retro groups is Stellastar. I saw them friday night and they get better each time. Just a fanastic band that have the sound, tunes, and looks in spades. They sound a bit like the Pixies, Duran Duran, even Big Country, but they have their own sound too. Another good band is Epoxies who have some Devones in their sound, really smart , playful songs that anyone who is into new wave would like.

Here's a perfect example of what I am talking about, I go to leave to get my son from school today, and I turn the radio on and Bowling for Soup's "1985" was playing, and I thought yuck, it sounds even worse now than it did when it first came out....so I flip through the stations to a classic rock station, and We will Rock you" by Queen just started playing, and I thought...this is what I mean, that song is a song that no matter how many times I have heard it, I don't ever get sick of it, and I crank it up, and it totally puts me in a great mood. That to me is what music should always be about.
Posted by MotleyRulz (Member # 3598) on :
There will never be a band to come around that matches Queen. That's sounds a bit biased I guess...
