What songs were big personal faves back in the day that you feel could easily have been, but for whatever reason weren't, Number 1 hits?
I imagine we all have our own list of such songs, those we simply can't believe didn't make it to the top, or that encountered particularly strong competition and were simply denied their - arguably rightful - place in history. I'll kick things off with my own selection (which I'll limit to what I know best i.e. late 80s, UK chart):
Black - Wonderful Life Freddy Mercury & Montserrat Caballe - Barcelona Bill Medley & Jennifer Warnes - (I've Had) The Time Of My Life Proclaimers - Letter From America Morrissey - Suedehead Fleetwood Mac - Everywhere Tracy Chapman - Fast Car Hot House Flowers - Don't Go INXS - Need You Tonight Boy Meets Girl - Waiting For A Star To Fall Freiheit - Keeping The Dream Alive Belinda Carlisle - Leave A Light On Natalie Cole - Miss You Like Crazy Queen - Breakthru Chris Rea - The Road To Hell (Part 2) Phil Collins - Another Day In Paradise
All *great* tracks which easily deserved top spot for at least a week if not beyond that.

"I've had the time of my life" made number one here in Oz, I think it was there for about 200 weeks, or at least it felt like it.

I am sure that Time of My Life, Fast Car, and Need You Tonight all hit #1. I cant remember which chart they hit on because we had Casey Kasem doing Billboard and then we had Rick Dees doing Radio & Records, but I am sure they hit one if not both of them.
