I'm changing gears a little on my metal threads. Instead of having a seperate thread for each of my band of the days I'm going to make one long continual thread and call it Sam's Metal Shop. That way I can do either an album, band, song etc and not limit myself so much. Not trying to compete with Noms just think there was enough good metal out there in the 80's for both of us. Besides we both have a little different tastes in our metal; I'm a little more mainstream and he's a little more hardcore.
for my first entry in Sam's Metal Shop I'm devoting it to Metallicas first album Kill 'Em All
Still one of their best and a definite groundbreaking album for the whole speed metal genre; and for these reasons this album will always be one of the true classics in the history of metal and rock n roll in general. This album has many classic songs on it like Seek and Destroy, Hit The Lights, The Four Horsemen, Metal Militia, etc... This album even though is now 22 years old still sounds fresh to me. Besides one can never go wrong with the late Cliff Burton on bass.

What an absolutley inspired first choice. Metallica rule all and the Four Horsemen is definitley one of my fave songs and is absolutley awesome when played live (Lars had to pull out of a recent festival and Dave Lombardo of Slayer and Joey of Slipknot took over on drums. Dave played Battery and the Four Horsemen).
I still prefer Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets to Kill 'Em All but as a debut album, this is one of the best ever (second place goes to Machine Head's "Burn My Eyes".

This is my favorite METALLICA album because its so much rawer than everything else they've ever done. I hate to say: I don't like their new stuff. Their "we are millionaires, they now play our videos" stuff. They played THE FOUR HORSEMEN at my wedding and me and my husband danced to it believe it or not.

I like this album because it has a sound that's so un-Metallica. The big crushing guitars have been replaced by snarky, trebley buzzsaws, and the sound is just very cool. The songs obviously haven't developed yet, but it's still a cool album.

i was listening to some METAL UP YOUR A.S.S. ..metallica mix. seek and destroy... what a great song. i have seen footage of the band giving out KILL 'EM ALL record albums at their shows.

I think TOO FAST FOR LOVE is my favorite album by them. Maybe its cuz its not played out. Of course SHOUT AT THE DEVIl is a really good one too. And then THEATRE OF PAIN.
I didnt really love GIRLS GIRLS GIRLS but I did like DR FEELGOOD. DR FEELGOOD is the end of the line though,don't really care for any of their newer stuff.
Im surprised that a lot of people are now admitting they like MOTLEY CRUE. When I was a teenager people used to rag on those of us who liked them. I remember people teasing me "You like Motley Crap!"

I agree with mamamia about Dr Feelgood being the end of the line for the band, however "Bitter Pill" is one of my absolute favorite songs by them and it came out after Dr. Feelgood.
Shout at the Devil is my favorite by them followed by Dr. Feelgood, then Too Fast For Love.

Neither is considered metal but both are usually considered cool by metalheads so I feel their inclusion here in the Shop is justified.

Les CLaypool, by a rather wide margin. Flea is a great rock bassist, but Les is one of those guys that redefines the bass guitar with what he's capable of doing with it.
Motleys Shout At The Devil,I think, is their best all around Metal record. I never liked Too Fast for love. By the time Theatre of Pain came out I wasn't liking their sound. Hello Metallica, Slayer, and the odd "hit" from a hairband that had a good lick or riff....Ratt's Round & Round, etc.

Most of the reason why Motley is getting more respect is because we are comparing them to what's out now. I'll take Dr. Feelgood over How You Remind Me seven days a week.
As for Les and Flea, both are talented players who lead their bands with their tuneful and flagrantly showy basslines... but at the end of the day, I prefer Geddy Freaking Lee.

My favorite Iron Maiden would have to be this classic.
The Number of the Beast
Murrays guitars, ****insons vocals; classic tracks like The Number of the Beast, Run To The Hills, The Prisoner, Hallowed Be Thy Name make this a true metal classic must have for your collections and proves why Iron Maiden were the fore runners of the NWOBHM.
Great great album. Still sounds great 20+ years after it's release.

Number of the Beast is definitely the best Maiden album ever released and to hear any song off this album live is awesome.

Rage For Order
Most people would go with either the concept album Operation Mindcrime or the more commercially listenable Empire this is the one that stands out the most for me. Songs like Neue Regale, Walk In The Shadows, Going To Get Close To You, (We Are Rebellion)Chemical Youth showcases the Seattle band at their best in my opinion. Geoff Tate has the absolute best singing voice in heavy metal.

I actually like HIGHWAY TO HELL better than BACK IN BLACK but its a close race. I think HIGHWAY TO HELL has personal reasons attached to it...I just remember a happy period in my teen years where that was the tape in the tape deck during all the cool partys and make-out sessions. BACK IN BLACK is a classic though. Its hard to find a bar jukebox that doesnt have BACK IN BLACK in it. Even HONKY TONK bars have it! HAhaha!
I'll agree with Number Of The Beast being the best IRON MAIDEN album.

Highway to Hell is awesome and has a soft spot in my heart because it was the swansong of Bon Scott. As a whole I like the Bon Scott era more than the Brian Johnson era.

I deliberately avoided Appetite for a long time in a form of heavy metal snobbery.
You see I was a die hard metal fan who despised all other music and fans of all other music. When Appetite came out, the amount of non-metal fans that I used to see at college with the album, t-shirt etc made me wonder what the hell was going on. People who wouldn't dream of listening to Maiden, Metallica, AC/DC etc were jumping to this new fad that would fade for them as quickly as it appeared and so I waited and when Use Your Illusion came out and the trend followers had moved on to the latest pop crap, that is when I decided to have a listen. Good album, bad story...

I missed the AC/DC conversation all great albums but how about AC/DC Blow Up Your Video.....Arguably the most sexist band to hit the stage, they rocked because they never once apologized for singing about covering whorish women in oil, or forcing them to perform oral, even when Angus Young reached middle age. This album featured the chestnut lyric "Gimme head, gimme tail" and one of the most memorable opening riffs in metal history ("That's the Way I Want My Rock & Roll"). I never did understand what the album title meant, but AC/DC never wrote a song that couldn't be understood by your average fifth grader, so I'm certain it's nothing clever. NWO, Jesus Built My Hot Rod, Scarecrow, TV II are some of the highlights off this album, but I like them all. A true masterpiece of its kind.

Today in the shop I'm going to introduce you all to an album that I'm sure nobody else has ever heard but me. It's one of my favorite albums of all time yet nobody has even heard of the band. Going back to 1986 and hailing from the Great White North of Canada came the band SWORD and their great album
Metalized
Why this band got no fanfare or recognition is beyond me but one can't go wrong listening to songs like F.T.W., Children of Heaven, Stoned Again, Dare To Spit, Stuck in Rock, Evil Spell there's 10 songs total on this album and I don't feel there's a clanker among them. If you can find a copy of this gem somehow somewhere do yourself a favor and buy that sucker right away. ***** out of *****

What do they play, thrash, death, proto-power? The only old Canadian metal bands I've caught wind of is Anvil and Annihilator, and recently only Eidolon and Devin Townsend's 6 billion projects.
Title reminds me of Dream Evil's sophmore effort Evilized.

Other Canadian metal bands would be Headpins, Helix, Kick Axe, VoiVod. I used to listen to Anvil quite a bit but i don't think their music aged well; still like a few songs by them.

Before the over commercialization of Pyromania and Hysteria Def Leppard was actually a pretty hard rockin' band with a raw edgy sound on their first two albums On Through the Night and
High N Dry
With hard rockin numbers like Let it Go, High N Dry(Saturday Night), Switch 625, Lady Strange and Another Hit and Run along with the awesome power ballead Bringin' On The Heart Break make this the first Def Leppard album you should get if you like a more raw sound instead of over produced sugar coated metal.

Heavy Metal before heavy metal this true classic from the true masters Led Zeppelin released this masterpiece way back in 1971.
This album has mistakenly been called Led Zeppelin IV, ZOFO, Runes, or Symbols for many years and also unofficially dubbed as The Stairway To Heaven Album The true title of the album is simply Led Zeppelin
34 years after its release you still here Black Dog, Rock and Roll, Battle of Evermore, Going to California and of course Stairway To Heaven on a daily basis on classic rock stations. Led Zeppelins music has stood the test of time for over 30 years and I'm sure 30 years from now you will still be hearing their music and it will still sound fresh. This album truly rocks and without this album the heavy metal genre wouldn't have reached the heights that it did. A true groundbreaking album if there ever was one.

Dokken--Tooth and Nail
Highlights of this album are Just Got Lucky, Into The Fire, Bullets to Spare and Alone Again The vocals of Don Dokken and the amazing guitar work by George Lynch make this one of the best LA based metal albums of the decade.

I miss these guys their time was way to short.
Definitely one of the best metal bands of the past 15 years only had 3 studio albums + 1 album of cover tunes.
RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE
This was their debut self titled release from 1992. A band known just as much for their political stances as they were for their musical prowess.
Unfortunately they broke up a few years ago because the rest of the band were getting fed up with Zach de la Rochas political extremes. The three members would form Audioslave and giving a listen to their album shows you that de la Rocha was the true talent of the group as Audioslave is pretty bad IMHO. Unfortunately de la Rocha hasn't had much success either on his own. Hopefully someday the 4 will realize that they had a good thing going with RATM and reform the group and kick *** once again.

I prefer the first album by miles because the band still played riffs instead of just backing music for Zach's raps. Audioslave doesn't show that Zach was the talent of the band, it just shows that they aren't as creative as they were in their youth. Too bad, because Cornell has one hell of a throat.

Not really heavy metal in the true sense of the word but generally gets lumped in with metal. Definitely hard rock and one of the best albums of all time in my opinion from first to last track. The band started off by calling themselves Mammoth but eventually took the surname the lead guitarist and drummer. The band of course is Van Halen and here is their debut album from 1978
Van Halen
From the opening notes of Runnin' With The Devil to the closing notes of On Fire this album is a true masterpiece and shows what a tight cohesive group they were especially for a first album. With the screeches and screams of lead singer David Lee Roth to the musicianship of guitarist Eddie Van Halen drumming of Alex Van Halen and bass of Michael Anthony makes this album worth a spin 26 years after it's release. With songs like the fore mentioned Runnin' With The Devil along with other classics like Eruption, You Really Got Me, Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love, Jamies Cryin' and Ice Cream Man still being played in heavy rotation on classic rock stations to this day. Heavy metal or not one can't deny that this album truly rocks.

Ridiculous rock album. One of the best. Does it seem to me like most of the classic bands had an amazing debut and then slowly dropped off, maybe making another hit 3-4 albums down? Boston, Van Halen, Guns and Roses, AC DC, even the stupid Cars ... their first albums were all megahits.

Todays album is what transported a group from a curious phenomena into worldwide superstars of epical proportins. With their first three albums not making much of a dent on the billboard charts, but their stageshows being touted by word-of-mouth as being a show you don't want to miss. With that the group decided to give the fans what they wanted and to promote their strong point the 4 man band from NYC unleashed onto the masses
KISS ALIVE!
for the next 3-5 years the group truly were the hottest band in the world as their images and likeness were everywhere and on just about anything. Never a band known for hit singles or never praised for strong songwriting the band took their gimmick and made it a multi-million dollar enterprise. Even if you're not a fan of the band I recommend to all to go see them in concert just once, it is truly a spectacle that needs to be seen to be appreciated.

Back to the shop once again
This album I consider to be the pinnacle of a band that never got their due. A very underrated and talented band coming from the great state of Florida I bring you Savatage and their metal opus and conceptual album
Streets: A Rock Opera
in short Streets tells the story of D.T. Jesus. Savatage on this album at least and what I consider to be their best lineup was Jon Oliva Vocals and Piano, Criss Oliva Guitars, Steve "Dr. Killdrums" Wacholz drums and Tommy Lee Middleton bass.
Streets is definitely not an album of hits nor was it intended to be the album is meant to be played in it's entirety from start to finish.
An unheralded gem that I highly recommend.

TWISTED SISTER: STAY HUNGRY Only I like lesser known songs on there like Captain Howdy, The Price, Burn In Hell and Don't Let Me Down.
SAVATAGE: I'm not a big fan. One or two songs maybe. Thats one of those bands that I never listen to a whole cd in one sitting. A little SAVATAGE goes a long way for me.

I believe it was Criss that died. Jon started having vocal problems.
I agree with mamamia that they're probably more an aquired taste and not for everybody. Their music isn't overly hard and loud it just has a different style. I do feel they're one of the more talented bands of their genre but they're still more of an aquired taste.

I love this group and I love this album. Many groups have tried to blend rap and metal to uneven results but these guys finally got the mixture right. This debut album rates as one of my favorites of all time as does the group. Without any further fanfare I bring you.
Linkin Park--Hybrid Theory
The metal screaming of Chester Bennington and the rapping of Mike Shinoda along with the samplings of Mr. Hahn makes this one tight album. One Step Closer, Crawling, In The End, Points of Authority and One Step Closer have already become staples of many a radio station.
The band shows no sign of slowing down either as their follow up album Meteora has gone multi-platinum.
Can't wait for their third offering.

I've heard that they miss out on a lot of festivals because it would take all day to set up their live show and they won't perform without all their effects. Whatever happened to "it's all about the music"?

DU HAST is the only song I know by them. I used to have a cd I liked to work out to (LINKIN PARK, GODSMACK, ROB ZOMBIE, RAMMSTEIN, etc.) and that song was on there. That's a good song...but I don't know if any of their other stuff is good.

The Cult had a unique sound all their own incorporating the pseudo-mysticism and Native American obsessions of the Doors, the guitar-orchestrations of Led Zeppelin, and the three-chord crunch of AC/DC, while adding touches of post-punk goth rock.

Pink Floyd--Dark Side of the Moon
what can I say an album that has been on the charts for the better part of 27 years or over 1400 weeks. This album is a true classic. Not really heavy metal but is heavy in a different sense of the word. Can't single out one, two or even three songs as being an outstanding track as this album needs to be played in it's entirety from start to finish. This album put the word master into masterpiece.

Earlier Rush was awesome I pretty much loved everything they did up through the Moving Pictures Album, after that i thought their career became a little more uneven. But got to love the 2112 album.

2112 was where I came in also. I heard it played in an art class in high school. I got in trouble for not getting anything done on that particular day's project, but when I explained to the teacher that I got caught up in the music, she got really excited. She was a lover of art in all it's forms and really got into the idea of introducing people to new forms, so she was all fired up about my discovery of Rush. After that, whenever someone in the class brought in a new piece of music, she'd stop me after class and ask me about my reaction to it. Occasionally I didn't care for something, but as long as I could put into words why I didn't care for it, she was interested to hear why. She wrote me a ton of late slips because we talked music so much. I discovered some great music as a result of that class. Robin Trower, ELO, Neil Young, Bob Seger and Rush were all bands that I heard for the first time in there.
