"Night of the Comet" is a late night fav of mine. Catherine Mary Stewart and Kelli Maroney seemed like real sisters in a "Valley girls trying to survive comet dust eating zombies" kind of way ... ya know.
I loved the use of the old arcade fav Tempest and how Regina was determined to knock 'DMK' off the high score screen and then she spent the rest of the movie trying to figure out exactly who was this "DMK" character.
Does anyone else remember reports last February about a strange green comet that was passing by earth? It totally made me think of the midnight comet parties from "Night of the Comet". Of course, instead of enjoying it, I spent the night it was passing closest to the earth in my basement. I watched "Night of the Comet" and played Tempest most of the night. However, I did take breaks to check news reports to make sure nothing bad was going on outside.
I know you've read about my love for "Night of the Comet" several times on here, but how about a little additional commentary as we watch it together tonight:
1. Notice the "Valley Girl" poster behind Mel at the theater.. btw, did we ever decide if that was Deborah Foreman? Maybe it was really suppose to be Catherine Mary Stewart as I look at it closer.
2. The movie theater by my house in the 80's offered the exact same assortment of candy in the glass counter as in the movie. But I don't remember the ushers at my theater having such slamming outfits with matching argyle socks as well.
3. Who knew Tommy actually works at the movie theater.. probably kind of easy to get a job there when your face is in 3-D.
4. I guess Rock did a number on Cindy Mancini's mom because she changed her name to Doris and turned into a B ..oops.. W.. itch.
5. Right before Michael Bowen aka Larry gets wacked over the head by a zombie with a wrench.. you've got to love the placement of that "Red Dust" movie poster.
6. "That's the end of you DMK.. you're History!" .. you have no idea how often I say that in real life and how often I get blank looks back from the recipients. - REG and Tempest.. I'm so wanting to hangout with this girl. I actually would have been at this theater all the time in the 80's .. look they had an Asteroids machine right next to Tempest.
7. Great foreshadowing by the movie theater posters.. Regina just opened a door to the outside with a "Deathrace 2000" poster on it.
8. Hey that trash bin just said "THOM" on the lid of it.. of course it also said "put all trash in bin and close the lid". Was that just a subliminal message for Thom Eberhardt?
9. Notice the words 'Entertainment or Death' written on the brick behind the zombie in the alley. By the looks of this dude, my thought is that he apparently wasn't very entertaining last night.
10. btw, remind me to always include "Night of the Comet" as one of my favorite Christmas movies. My family watches a Christmas classic every Christmas Eve.. ya think my parents will be impressed with my selection for this year?
11. Kelli Maroney is brilliant as Samantha! But does this girl show up for auditions wearing a cheerleader outfit or what? Night of the Ridgemont High Cheerleader... Oh and she is rockin' some awesome looking pink/blue two-tone Converses for those watching with me tonight.
12. Did anyone ever actually see Samantha's missing dog Muffy? My thought is that is really just one of those invisible dog leashes from the 80's she is walking around with at the moment.
13. The radio station is like the ultimate 80's dance club in my opinion.. neon lights, incredible tunes, and a sweet curved leather sectional. Oh and that bathroom is beyond wicked.
14. I've mentioned this before, but when Samantha is taking over as the radio station's new DJ.. notice the "Valley Girl" album she tosses on the floor. Like not too cool Samantha!
15. Mary Woronov is wearing legwarmers to spice up that boring thinktank jumpsuit. Bamersy.. did you happen to let her borrow yours?
16. Samantha's double dream sequence might actually be the grossest and scariest part of the movie. I love her reaction when she gets pulled over and suddenly realizes she is holding an open beer can..
17. I just noticed that Samatha has on a pink watch too.. matching her pink socks and semi-pink shoes. But how did she forget to wear pink underwear for that bathroom scene.. where is her attention to detail?
18. Do you think the designer of Bowflex saw Hector working out on that radio station chair and took it as an opportunity to create a new workout machine?
19. wow.. is that Grandpa's baby blue Caddy from "License To Drive" that just got pelted with Samantha's machine gun practice?
20. And I thought "The Lost Boys" was where the attack of Eddie Munster started. Run..Hector..Run!!
21. Cancel the dream sequence as the scariest part.. "Girls Just Want To Have Fun" is playing. I mean those stockboys went from totally geek to totally freakin' creepy!
22. My favorite tune from Night of the Comet.. "Eyes On You" by Jocko Marcellino is now playing. Nice to see that psycho stockboy Willy had time to pick out a monogrammed Hugh Hefner robe.
23. Do you think Regina would have been more cooperative if someone had helped her get those tags off her new shopping spree wardrobe? Way cheaper than replacing that computer monitor that is now on the floor.
24. Howdy partner.. you like girls? Welcome to what I like to now call the attack of Samantha Belmont!
25. Hey, if I ever accidently almost shoot my sister.. remind me to just compliment her on her new outfit to smooth it over.
26. Public Safety Announcement: Don't cross against the light because the burden of civilization is upon us!
Samantha Belmont and Danny Mason Keener .. what a beautifully awesome combination!

I actually always had this favorite in the back of my mind......one of those I should have made a "I can't remember the name of" movie post.
I'd seen it on USA "UP" All Night a long time ago and loved it.....then it vanished from my memory til the Rewind.
Such an awesome movie.........funny, campy, great montages, great cast.....just all around awesome......I don't know what to say that Valley didn't already point out?

For anyone wondering.. that really is Kelli Maroney. I asked her to stop by and say hi. How cool is it to know she really is that awesome to actually do it!
Everyone needs to checkout her website.. she recently posted a link to a "Night of the Comet" interview she did with Catherine Mary Stewart that is beyond entertaining!

I just saw this movie for the first time a few months ago and it's already become one of my favorite 80's/zombie movies, and most of that is because of the awesome Kelli Maroney character! I think I love it so much because I wish I could go back to the 80's and be able to raid an L.A. shopping mall the way they did
I wish a special edition blu ray would be released with a ton of awesome bonus features on it.

Great thread! Made all the better by a cameo appearance by Kelli, which is as cool as that time the actor who played a Nazi in Raiders Of The Lost Ark and an imperial guard in Star Wars joined.
Valley's superfan list means I'll have to re-watch this soon to check off all those references. NTC is a highly entertaining movie and did everything that a big budget blockbuster like Mars Attacks! couldn't quite accomplish. Instant kitsch classic.

Nice revisit Valley! Loved the little insights that I am now going to be looking for next time I sit down with it. In one of those "right under your nose" kind of moments, it never struck me that this was set around Christmas time! I love the Christmas classics, but I always look for the ones that have a little bent angle to them as well for the family like Gremlins, Die Hard, Bad Santa...
I absolutely loved when they gave Big Trouble in Little China the 2-disc, fully loaded run and remain disappointed that NoTC has not yet gotten the full treatment. The magnetic strip on my card is just begging for it!

"That cheerleader" posted above you.
Kelli's presence here has officially pwned every other thread (except for the other one she posted on).

It really really should've had a 'Night of the Creeps' style special edition.

I actually own the dvd, but I was lucky to score "Night of the Comet" from MGMHD and I must say that the picture and sound are quite impressive. Which begs the question.. why not release this movie on Blu-ray?
Kelli who is incredibly knowledgeable with regard to the backstory of NotC will probably state that even though it has somehow been released on DVD, NotC is still battling copyright issues. I won't elaborate because I don't know all the details, but I do know Kelli attempted to purchase the rights to NofC from MGM. Mainly I believe to protect the original with hopes of developing a sequel with Catherine Mary Stewart and Thom Eberhardt. These are my thoughts from listening to a podcast, not necessarily what Kelli thinks.
My hope is that "Night of the Comet" will eventually enjoy the same upgrade treatment as the recently released "Night of the Creeps" Blu-ray that logan5 and Bamersy mentioned.
So here you go.. Bamersy's Date Night in the Barrio Edition:
- commentary by Thom Eberhardt, Catherine Mary Stewart, and of course Kelli Maroney.
- deleted scenes.. from what I understand, there might only be one because of the tight budget the movie was on. I've heard there was a special effects scene that had to be cut for some reason.
- NotC cast reunion.. can you imagine the fun of getting all those folks back together again.
- the making of cult classic.. discussions with the cinematographer, FX group, and make-up crew.
- behind the scenes.. Kelli any chance either a cast or crew member had a camcorder on the set back then?
- Night of the Teenage Comet Zombies.. a private screening at The New Bev theater where the cast and fans watch the original "Night of the Comet" together followed by a questions & answers session.
okay.. let's start adding a few of our dream ideas:
- Night of the Comet on the net.. with a link from Blu-ray live to a NotC webpage, The Rewind movie page, and of course this thread. ha .. Nick??
- The Comet Dance with DJ Samantha Belmont.. another Blu-ray live feature where you can listen to the NotC soundtrack and purchase tracks through itunes.
- NotC movie locations.. comparison of set locations from the movie versus what they look like today.
What do you think and what would you like to see on a Night of the Comet Blu-ray?

On any special edition type dvd, I always look for the various trailers and movie posters from around the world. The trailers from back then just crack me up and I like seeing how other countries interpret the concept and ideas behind a movie.
I so need to seek out Night of the Creeps and watch that one. Have never seen it, but I know it fits this model and sounds like it more than deserves a viewing.

Not that it's a competition, but in the battle of the 80's 'Night Of's', Comet wins hands down for me every time (and that is with the full recognition that Creeps is a good movie). It bummed me (and many others) out when they bareboned it on the DVD. Valley's release is the one we should have gotten.

This is easily one of the top 10 Rewind threads ever. (Someone please make that list!) I remember the eraly days of the Rewind when Night of the Comet didn't get the attention that it deserves now. When there was no DVD and the VHS was sky high on ebay. Always been a Catherine Mary Stewart fan, and wish Kelli was in more movies.

Riptide.. I totally agree. I just read this thread from start to finish again and there is incredible input from so many people. And to have someone that was a main actress in "Night of the Comet" actually join The Rewind and contribute makes it that much more fun!
