I posted about this theater before, but for those who don't know already, NEW BEVERLY MIDNIGHTS is an event held in Los Angeles every Saturday @ Midnight and is dedicated to screening 80's films on the BIG SCREEN!!! This little goldmine of a theater doesn't focus on box office hits of the 1980's either, most films they choose to screen are either cult classics or just 80's gems that never really took off. Wait till you see the upcoming schedule!

If you live in the L.A. area or are planning to come out for a visit, do yourself a favor and get to New Beverly Cinemas on a Saturday! Usually for each screening a special guest will speak prior to the start of the film (Directors, Writers, Actors, etc). PLUS, they dig up old trailers from the legendary decade and show them during the intro! It really is one amazing night out at the movies and to see these rare films on the BIG SCREEN is something everyone here deserves to experience.

COMING THIS WEEKEND!
Saturday September 20th
25th Anniversary...
Michael Mann's THE KEEP
1983, 96 min
 -

SEPTEMBER
September 27 Over the Top
(Sylvester Stallone. Big Rig Truckin'. ARM WRESTLING!)

OCTOBER
October 4 Hard to Kill
(Steven Seagal is Mason Storm. Mason Storm is... Hard To Kill!)
October 18 All Night Horror Show!
(100% Movie Mania! New Bev Fundraiser! 12 Hours Of Movies, Fun & ?? Argento & Fulci, Mysterious Forces & Sorority Sisters, Flying Piranha & Hungry Zombies, plus the scariest of them all - Teen Pregnancy! 8 films plus trailers, shorts & more! Full schedule & advance tickets up soon!)
October 25 The Wraith
(If you've done nothing wrong, you've got nothing to fear!)

NOVEMBER
November 1 Alien Nation
(Prepare Yourself for the 20th Anniversary!)
November 8 The Stepfather
(Daddy's Home and He's Not Very Happy!)
November 22 Waxwork
(20 Anniversary! More fun than a barrel of mummies!)
November 29 Berry Gordy's The Last Dragon
(Now, when I say, "Who's da mastah?" you say, "Sho'nuff!")

For all the info, or to give props to the guy who organizes the whole thing, check out

Tim, as I said before this theater is totally awesome! I have a friend that has lived in LA for over 12 years and if "Waxwork" wasn't so close to Thanksgiving, I'd be crashing his pad for it. I'm not joking when I say that I'm going to attempt to coincide my next LA adventure with the New Beverly Midnights.

Ok, I'm totally bummed that I missed "Just One of the Guys", "Streets of Fire" and "Chopping Mall" to mention a few favs. What I really like about it all is that they try to have special guests at the screenings that had something to do with the movie.

So last night was "THE KEEP"...has anyone seen this movie? It was one strange flick, but I enjoyed it. It was definitley Michael Mann's deepest and weirdest film to date. Tangerine Dream's score only added to the dark, eerie atmospheric vibe that ran constant throughout the movie.

Believe it or not, the theater was filled to near-capacity. I couldn't believe how much of a turn out THE KEEP received. Pretty good for a rare film from the 80's that still hasn't been released on dvd!

I think that's just Fightertown's wish list.

I've seen a bunch of those already at the Bev and I know a few more are in the pipeline. A few have rights issues (Rad, Gleaming The Cube) and others have print issues (ie. Sony's last print of Christine was trashed when it played last year at the Aero in Santa Monica).

In better news, titles have been announced for the all day Dolph Lundgren fest: Red Scorpion, Universal Soldier, Rocky 4, The Punisher (original director's cut with the director IN PERSON), I Come In Peace. That's a lot of Lundgren.

That answered one of my biggest questions....I was wondering how many hidden gems were not able to be shown on the big screen again because of rights issues. There are so many great flicks that seem to get lost in the shuffle because of copy right issues that hinder a DVD release and apparently the the New Bev has those issues as well.

Keep up the awesome work, when I make it to LA later this year, I'll definitely be checking out what will be playing at the New Bev.

You know Ronnie would enjoy "Aliens" on the big screen tonight. I wish that i lived closer because I'd definitely be there for several of these flicks.

Speaking of that, Phil or Tim as soon as you know May and June please post because I plan to be in LA sometime this summer.

Valley - I should have May / June finalized soon. I'll tease you with the fact that I'm running a festival the whole first week of June - a different double feature every night (starting at 7:30 each night, not midnight)! I should be running an all night show at some point in May. It'll be similar to last year's "All Night Horror Show"... but won't be all horror.

Fightertown - recently there was pretty inclusive Mickey Rourke retrospective at the Aero in Santa Monica. Within the past few months the New Bev has played Angel Heart & Johnny Handsome. I had a midnight show last year of Harley Davidson & The Marlboro Man. Screenwriter Don Michael Paul spoke at length before & after the screening.... but sadly it was my least attended event ever!

Tonight's ALIENS should look GREAT - it's the first screening of a BRAND NEW 35mm print. If you've seen a revival screening of it in the past decade, this should look 10000% better.

There's a lot more (non-midnight) excitement coming up at the theater:

March 11:
Ed Wood/Problem Child, with special guests Scott Alexander & Larry Karaszewski, the writers of both these gems.

March 12:
A Boy and His Dog/The Day The Earth Caught Fire, with special guest Harlan Ellison.

March 18:
Actor Donovan Leitch in person for his films The In Crowd & The Blob (1988)

Wow...I'd so enjoy March 18th. I'm a huge Donovan Leitch fan with the movie "The In Crowd" being my fav.

I know Devo would happily break out his dance moves to a little "Sweet Soul Music" if he could make it on the 18th.
